16 | sl | Yesterday we passed along Google's assertion that Google Assistant would indeed come to Sonos speakers in 2019 after missing the original 2018 target, and today Sonos announced it started a private beta test of Google Assistant on its smart speakers for a 2019 launch. Google Assistant will directly integrate into Sonos One and Beam speakers, and older models will work in conjunction with Google Home and similar smart speakers. | https://variety.com/2019/digital/news/sonos-google-assistant-beta-test-1203102243/

18 | sl | Yale and Emtek are showing off smart door locks that run August's smart lock software. The parent company of both locks also owns August so it's not a huge suprise but it's interesting to see the software move to non-August platforms without the need to purchase additional equipment. The Emtek models are $390 coming in April or $440 with a keypad coming in February. The Yale lock is meant for interior, basement and side doors in versions with keys, keypads and touchscreens. They range from $149 to $299 shipping in Q1.

20 | sl | Good news for those of us with more than one Instagram account, the iOS version will now allow you to post a photo or vidoe to multiple accounts at once. CEO Kevin Systrom told Wired in 2017 that the company preferred to focus on "authenticity" and users' connections by not allowing regrams and multi-posts, but Systrom has since left the company. | https://techcrunch.com/2019/01/09/instagram-self-regram/

38 | :48 | tm | AMD announced the Radeon VII, the first 7nm GPU marketed to consumers. AMD says it should be about 25% faster than the last model at the same power consumption. The Radeon VII has 60 compute units at speeds up to 1.8 GHz with 16GB of high bandwidth memory. Anandtech described the Radeon VII as a Radeon Instinct MI50 with a bit higher boost clock. AMD CEO Lisa Su showed it running Devil May Cry 5 in 4K at 60 fps. It arrives February 7 for $699. AMD also announced the 7-nanometer 3rd gen Ryzen 3 Chips will start shipping mid-2019. AMD ran a Cienebench test at stock frequencies that showed 30 percent less power draw and a slight edge in performance than a Core i9-900K. | https://www.engadget.com/2019/01/09/amd-radeon-vii-7nm-gpu/

42 | :54 | tm | Bloomberg reported that Samsung is among companies with agreements to sell their phones with Facebook preinstalled. The story notes that you can't delete the Facebook app when it comes preinstalled like that, only disable it. The Next Web's Ivan Mehta points out that the preinstalled app is a placeholder Manager/Installer stub, not the main Facebook app. App researcher Jane Wong notes it is a non-functional empty shell that doesn't collect any data. | https://thenextweb.com/finance/2019/01/09/no-samsung-isnt-pre-installing-facebook-on-your-phone/
43 | :55 | sl | Electrify America and Hubject plan to roll out Plug&Charge functionality to more than 2,000 public fast charging stations in the US by the end of the year. 48 | :54 | tm | Last year all four US mobile carriers promised to stop selling customer location data to shady companies after Securus, a prison technology company, was caught using the data without customer permission. Motherboard reports that it was able to pay a third party $300 in order to locate a phone on T-Mobile's network using real-time location data from the carrier. Mobile carriers sell information to location aggregators with the idea that they could sell anonymized aggregated data to companies who want to gain insights into general population movement. For instance T-Mobile sells data to an aggregator company called Zumigo which sold the data to a company called Microbilt. In the Motherboard case, Microbilt sold the data onward to to a Bail Bond Company that shared it with a bail industry source who shared it with Motherboard. AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile have all said reselling in this manner violates its contracts and policies. All carriers require clients to get consent from people before tracking them and Microbilt says it requires that too and has terminated access for the person who passed the information on to Motherboard. In addition, Zumigo has cut off Microbilt's access to data. AT&T has also blocked data from going to Microbilt. | https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/nepxbz/i-gave-a-bounty-hunter-300-dollars-located-phone-microbilt-zumigo-tmobile

51 | :58 | sl | Apple CEO Tim Cook appeared on CNBC's Mad Money program to let people know Apple will launch new services this year. The most obvious service for Apple to launch would be a TV service given the billions they've spent on unreleased original programming and the appearance of iTunes TV and movies on Samsung TVs. He also said he thought people in the future would call health Apple's greatest contribution to humankind implying some kind of health-related service. And he reiterated that the iPhone XR has been the most popular iPhone everyday since launch and the Apple Watch and Airpods bring in more money than the iPod ever did. On a related note, Nikkei reports its sources say Apple has reduced planned production of iPhones by 10 percent for Q1 of this year. | https://www.engadget.com/2019/01/09/apple-health-services-2019/

59 | Graham(Patreon supporter) says: I'm listening to the CES Day 2 podcast (DTNS 3443) on my morning tube ride (in London) and heard you mention the update to add a payment feature to Motiv rings... For the last 18 months I have been using, daily, a payment ring from Kerv (mykring.com). It has a virtual MasterCard attached to the account and allows contactless payment or tap-to-pay at businesses that accept ApplePay and the like. It also works on the London Underground and bus network. Very convenient and particularly handy during the winter months when you are all rugged up with coats and gloves that make it problematic to get to your physical wallet. The Kerv doesn't have onboard authentication, so it is exactly the same as a chip-and-pin credit/debit card in terms of security... if the ring is lost or stolen you can dissociate the connection between ring and card.
