| :36 | tm | Arctic sea ice has receded to historically low levels. A California nonprofit organization called Ice911 Research proposes spreading a thin layer of 35-micrometer silicate beads cross the ice to boost reflectivity and therefore slow down melting. Ice911 Research's CEO Leslie Field says that the thicker arctic ice layer could lead to cooler temperatures worldwide. The company ran tests on ice-covered lakes in California, Minnesota and Alaska. The results published in the journal Earth's Future showed increase in reflectivity and ice thickness. It would cost about $300 million, to cover the 9600 miles of the arctic. before that happens Field wants to get funding for a test in a part of the arctic ocean where ice is lost during the summer. | https://www.wired.com/story/geoengineering-tiny-glass-beads-prevent-arctic-ice-from-melting/ | - safe for land mamals need marine mamal test - doesn't cool ocean

| :43 | tm | Air Force Lt. Col. Jason Rossi announced that the Strategic Automated Command and Control System or SACCS has moved to a “highly-secure solid state digital storage solution” in June. SACCS is one of many duplicative systems used by U.S. Strategic Command to send emergency action messages from nuclear command centers to forces in the field. | https://www.c4isrnet.com/air/2019/10/17/the-us-nuclear-forces-dr-strangelove-era-messaging-system-finally-got-rid-of-its-floppy-disks/
| :45 | sl | Time for some pig tech. A paper published in Mammalian Biology found evidence of pigs using tools. A group of scientists from several French institutions observed 11 instances of Visayan warty pigs using sticks and bark to help build their nests at a zoo in Paris. Video shows the pigs holding a stick in their mouth and using it to dig. The scientists gave the pigs spatulas and the pigs used them twice. Add pigs to the list of animals who use tools alongside crows catching prey with sticks, otters cracking open shellfish with stones, and elephants covering watering holes with rocks | https://phys.org/news/2019-10-pigs-tools.html

| :48 | Have you recently scoffed at a new pieces of software or device? Have you proudly stuck to your old laptop or phone? Have you looked at new software innovations with disdain and stuck to how you've always done things? You are probably not a capuchin or macaque then. | https://phys.org/news/2019-10-monkeys-outperform-humans-cognitive-flexibility.html
| So easy a monkey could do it? Think again my friends. a study by scientists at Georgia State University found monkeys have more cognitive flexibility. In a paper published in Scientific Reports found capuchin and rhesus macaque monkeys were less susceptible to "cognitive set" bias. The bias causes resistance to a more efficient option that is new. On a computer monkeys and humans were given the following task: Follow a pattern by pushing a striped square, then dotted square then a triangle. Monkeys got a banana pellet. Humans got a reward sound or points. After several repeated trials the program began showing the triangle right away Monkeys grabbed the triangle pushed it forward and got their banana pellet. 70% of them did it the first time it was shown. 61% of humans never used the triangle first, just kept following the old sequence. Even after being shown a video demonstrating that you could successfully push the triangle first, 30% don't. even when subjects were specifically told to try something new, not all of them did. Study co-author Sarah Pope tested this with members of a semi-nomadic tribe in Namibia to eliminate the effect fo western education. Still more than half resisted the new shortcut. HOWEVER in a test at Zoo Atlanta children 7-10 years old were four times as likely to use the shortcut, though still more than half resisted.
