21 | :36 | tm | Huawei announced its third-quarter revenue was up 27%, thanks to strong smartphone shipments prior to the enactment of US trade restrictions in May. The US has allowed some exemptions to the restrictions that expire in November. However not all technology is exempt. The company's Mate 30 smartphone, which went on sale last month, can't run Google's version of Android. Still, the company has shipped 185 million smartphones so far this year, which Strategy Analytics estimates means a 29% rise in Q3. At an event in Zurich, Huawei showed off new 5G antennas for the Blade AAU basestation. The new antennas double bandwidth and boost power output while weighing less and using less power. Huawei has shipped 400,000 base stations and estimates 56 carriers worldwide have deployed its new equipment. | https://www.reuters.com/article/us-huawei-tech-results/huaweis-revenue-rises-24-4-in-first-three-quarters-of-2019-idUSKBN1WV0LJ?feedType=RSS&feedName=technologyNews

23 | :39 | scott | Some users of Bose Quiet Comfort 35 II headphones noticed a recent firmware update reduce the effectiveness of noise-cancelation. Some of those users downgraded the firmware to bring noise-canceling up to snuff, but Bose has blocked the ability to downgrade citing security concerns. Instead Bose engineers are visiting the houses of Bose users to try to figure out what's wrong, since they can't replicate the problem in the lab. So far Bose says it has modified how users update firmware but hasn't identified the problem. Users within a reasonable distance of Bose's Framingham Massachusetts headquarters can apply for a visit. | https://www.theverge.com/2019/10/16/20917012/bose-qc35ii-firmware-noise-cancellation-bug-home-visits
24 | :42 | sl | The Hollywood Reporter reports that Apple's upcoming AppleTV+ has outspent its initially projected $1 billion annual content budget. Sources say the Jennifer Aniston vehicle Morning Show costs $15 million an episode for a total of $300 million for two seasons, with $2 million-an-episode fees that producers Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston negotiated. See, starring Jason Momoa, is said to cost $240 million for two seasons. Apple, while not banning explicit content outright, has reportedly said such content must be in service of the storyline and all projects should be in line with Apple's aspirational brand identity. | https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/apples-bumpy-tv-launch-inside-tech-giants-impending-arrival-hollywood-1247577

48 | On Uber acquiring grocery delivery company Cornershop after Mexico blocked Walmart's acquisition: "The COFECE (Federal Comission for Economic Competitivity) stopped Walmart from acquiring Cornershop fearing that they could block competing stores and show preferred results being directed at their own. While Cornershop is only present in 10 cities, here in Mexico, the delivery service they offer can solve one of the main problems Walmart has which is dealing with last mile delivery, since they have only a limited range when offering products delivery. After the announcement, Walmart's stock didn't look that bad (it only lost about 1.1%) and their sales from apps or main portal represent about 1.4% of their total sales. It makes more sense for Uber to expand their market, acquiring Cornershop and complementing their services. In most cities where Uber offers ride services, they are no longer the first or second best options, being beaten by Didi or Beat, since any of these services are 10% - 15% cheaper in any given ride, but they don't offer food delivery or, in this case, fresh goods, pet toys or items from Walmart, Costco, Petco and other stores, where Uber can establish themselves as the main option there, using the fact that they already have brand recognition.
