Previously, a user needed a Chinese bank account to use WeChat Pay which is the dominant way of exchanging money in China. The move hopes to tap into foreign workers and tourists.

17 | tm | US Representative Bobby Rush, chair of the consumer protection subcommittee, wrote a letter to Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, saying "it is my belief that the Comcast Corporation needs to be broken up." A discrimination lawsuit against Comcast, brought by Entertainment Studios' Byron Allen, will appear before the US Supreme Court November 13. Allen accuses Comcast of discrimination in its decisions not to carry Entertainment Studios' cable television networks. Representative Rush supported Comcast's acquisition of NBC Universal in 2009. | https://deadline.com/2019/11/comcast-breakup-threat-congressman-letter-byron-allen-lawsuit-1202781178/

21 | :36 | tm | Following up on the report yesterday that people received text messages originally sent on February 14, the Verge reports that a company called Syniverse which provides third-party networking services to mobile carriers, says a single server was to blame. The server failed on February 14 and was brought back online November 7, delivering messages that had been trapped since the server went down. | https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/7/20953422/text-messages-delayed-received-overnight-valentines-day-delay

23 | :41 | sl | Wednesday, Apple IT specialist Bob Gendler found a macOS database file that locally stores info from mail and other apps, to be used by Siri to make better suggestions to users. A file called snippets.db was storing text from encrypted emails in its unencrypted file. So if an attacker had access to your system files and you were not using FileVault to encrypt your entire system they could access portions of emails you thought were encrypted. Gendler reported the issue to Apple July 29 and did not receive a response until November 5. Apple told the Verge it will address the vulnerability in a future software update. In the meantime Apple suggests that concerned users shut off Siri's access to the Mail app in the Siri Suggestions and Privacy section of settings. And in macOS Catalina you can avoid giving apps full disk access as well. And of course turning on FileVault would work too. | https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/8/20954130/apple-mail-encrypted-unencrypted-email-macos-siri-text
24 | :44 | tm | The satellite startup Kepler demonstrated delivering broadband speeds of 38Mbps down, and 120Mbps up to a German icebreaker sea vessel stationed in the Arctic serving as a mobile lab for the MOSAiC research expedition. Using two low Earth orbit nanosatellites that are on a polar orbital trajectory, Kepler was able to allow researchers in the MOSAiC team to transfer large amounts of data to shore based research stations from the ship. The speeds are a significant jump over spotty and slower traditional satellite-based broadband previously used. | https://techcrunch.com/2019/11/07/kepler-achieves-a-world-first-for-satellite-broadband-with-100mbps-connection-to-the-arctic/

31 | :47 | Annual OS updates. What are they good for?
32 | I got into a conversation with Ray Robertson about whether it’s actually good to have annual operating system updates. We’ve come to expect them on the Apple side, Microsoft has kind of obfuscated whether they’re happening annually, and Google releases annually but people don’t actually _get_ the updates annually. My luddite friend Ray wants updates every 2-3 years, I love the new shiny. I do prefer though that the new shiny not be a dumpster fire. So maybe the Snow Leopard release every other year, with new shiny on the opposite years is the right answer?

41 | Nathaniel - We received a catalog from Amazon today for holiday shopping. It looks like they're trying to revive the experience of kids flipping through a catalog, circling their dream items, taping pages to the inside of the fridge, and arguing about which toy is best. I think it's a great idea, especially with sticker pages and built in wishlist! I attached a video review by Grizzly. She seems curious, but not enough to get up. | show video

43 | I'm worried about privacy in general but Facebook, Google, and Amazon are not my biggest concern. I care about net neutrality as much privacy. I'm more worried the ISPs' DNS servers knowing all the sites we visit (that's why I use other DNS). I'm bothered by the monopoly and lack of ISP choices. I wonder why we don't hear news about net neutrality anymore ... Next time you touch the topic, I would be curious to hear your thoughts. Thank you! Cheers, Komei
