15 | sl | Friday we mentioned that some TiVo users were seeing ads played before their recorded shows. TiVo has confirmed this is not just a test, and a spokesperson told LightReading.com, "DVR advertising is going to be a permanent part of the service. We expect to be fully rolled out to all eligible retail devices within 90 days.” | https://www.theverge.com/2019/9/21/20876976/tivo-pre-roll-ads-commercials-dvr-recordings
16 | tm | Friday afternoon YouTube announced it was changing its verification policy to leave all existing verifications in place. It also decided to continue to let channels apply for verification when they reach 100,000 subscribers. YouTube will make sure channels are authentic before verifying them and may still move verification in cases where it was applied mistakenly. YouTube will also make the change form a checkmark or music note to a grey background for verified channels, but that will now happen next year instead of in October. | https://www.theverge.com/2019/9/20/20876493/youtube-verification-backtrack-creators-keep-checkmarks

It is not available from T-Mobile or Samsung’s own online store. The Galaxy Fold will launch in the US with Samsung’s Premier Service, which includes device and accessory support for the Galaxy Buds headphones and Samsung’s custom aramid fiber cover for the Fold. Pricing is still $1,980. | https://9to5google.com/2019/09/23/galaxy-fold-us-launch-date-details/

Libra's reserve will be made up of 50% US dollars, 18% euros, 14% yen, 11% British pounds, and 7% Singapore dollars. The actual assets used in the reserve will be a combination of a pool of cash and very short-term government securities in those denominations. | https://www.reuters.com/article/us-facebook-libra-basket/u-s-dollar-to-be-main-currency-underpinning-facebooks-libra-spiegel-idUSKBN1W522K

Devices can start using the logo representing these specs on January 1st, 2020. | https://www.engadget.com/2019/09/22/cta-8k-tv-standard/
20 | tm | AMD announced the release of the 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X processor is delayed until November, originally announced as shipping in September. AMD cited high demand and the need to build up sufficient stock for the launch. AMD also announced that the next generation Threadripper processors will come to market in November as well. Those chips will start at 24-cores, although no other product details were announced. | https://www.anandtech.com/show/14895/amd-next-gen-threadripper-and-ryzen-9-3950x-coming-november

22 | :34 | sl | Google announced users can now opt in to let people potentially view transcriptions of Google Assistant recordings. Existing Assistant users will have to confirm this new Voice and Audio Activity setting before any human review might occur. Only 0.2% of snippets are reviewed. Google will also release a Google Assistant hotword sensitivity setting, which lets you balance accidental activation vs. the ease of being heard in s noisy environment. And Google says it will be more stringent about excluding accidental activation from human review, even when the user has opted in. | https://9to5google.com/2019/09/23/google-assistant-hotword-sensitivity/
23 | :37 | tm | Google announced Google Play Pass will launch soon giving Android users access to more than 350 apps, including games, for $4.99 a month. Unlike Apple Arcade, Google is not funding the apps. These are all apps that exist already on the Play Store. If you subscribe and already have an app in Google Play Pass, your installed app will be upgraded to remove ads and unlock in-app purchases. Among the non-games in Google Play pass are AccuWeather and Hi-Q recorder. PlayPass subscriptions can be shared to up to 5 family members. Google will pay developers based on screen time and opens of apps. Google will give users 10 days free and says it will offer the first year at $1.99 per month. It will be available in the US this week and other countries “soon.” | https://www.theverge.com/2019/9/23/20878843/google-play-pass-bundles-350-android-games-and-apps-for-4-99-per-month

25 | :43 | tm | The International federation of robotics released its report that 422,000 robots were shipped worldwide in 2018 up 6% year over year and the first time the number was above 400,000. Shipments are expected to fall in 2019 but then rebound to grow 12% a year from 2020 to 2022. Logistics systems like those used in autonomous vehicles represent 41% of all units sold followed by inspection and maintenance robots at 39%. service robots aimed at consumers was up 15%. Asia remains the largest market with growth in Japanese installation offsetting declines in China and Korea for overall growth in Asia of 1%. The number two market, Europe grew 14% and the Americas in third grew 20%. The top 5 markets for robotics installations representing 74% were China, Japan, Korea, the US and Germany. Automtive remains the top industry for robots with 30% fo the total supply in 2018 and a 2% increase in installations. Electronics is number two but declined 14% because of trade restrictions. Metal and machinery is the third largest industry for robots, the top countries deploying robots in metal and machinery are Finland, Swede, Switzerland and Belgium. | https://www.roboticsbusinessreview.com/research/world-robotics-report-global-sales-of-robots-hit-16-5b-in-2018/

37 | Quantum computing uses qubits instead of bits. The simple explanation is the bits can be both 1 and 0 not just either or, allowing a computer to process large amounts of information in parallel that classical computers have to do sequentially. A qubit's state is easily susceptible to interference, making error correction very important. That's slowed down the number of quits that can be used and reduced the practicality of quantum computers. Quantum supremacy is a milestone in the development of quantum computing where a quantum computer would be able to solve a problem that a classical computer practically cannot. This is different from Quantum Advantage, which is the milestone of a quantum computer performing something much faster than a classical computer. This is generally defined as a super polynomial speedup. Last week the Financial Times found a draft of a paper on the NASA website, written by a team led by Google's John Martinis. The draft has since been removed and Google and NASA are not commenting. However the draft paper claimed to have achieved quantum supremacy. The paper was written about a program run on the Sycamore quantum computer which uses 53 qubits. Google's quantum computer solve a calculation proving the randomness of a number generator in 200 seconds. The same calculation is estimated to take the world's fastest supercomputer, Summit, 10,000 years. That's not a practical time in which to solve the calculation so if indeed Google's quantum computer achieved this it would be a credible demonstration of quantum supremacy. IBM’s head of research Dario Gil told the Financial Times that Google's system was a specialized piece of hardware built specifically to solve that calculation. To demonstrate quantum supremacy Google would have to have used a general purpose computer. Gil told MIT technology Review "quantum computers will never reign ‘supreme’ over classical ones, but will work in concert with them." director of quantum hardware at Intel, Jim Clake called it a "notable mile marker" anyway. And USC's Daniel Lidar praised the Google system for how it reduced crosstalk to reduce interference between quits, which is a huge problem in quantum computing. How significant might this be? MIT's Will Oliver compared it to Kitty Hawk in that it will spur more research to develop the field quicker.
