| tm | The Federal Trade Commission announced Tuesday that AT&T will pay $60 million to settle a case alleging the company lied to customers about its “unlimited” data plans, which throttled data over a certain threshold. AT&T must now deposit that $60 million into a fund providing “partial refunds” to customers who signed up for unlimited data plans before 2011. ATT also must disclose any restrictions its unlimited plans have going forward. | https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/5/20949850/att-fine-unlimited-data-plan-fake-throttling

| :34 | sl | Google is launching something called Google Play Points in the US. You can earn points for things you do in Google Play like downloading apps, subscribing to services, buying movies, books and TV shows, etc. Points can be redeemed for other things you would do in Google Play, like in-app purchases for Pokemon Go or renting a movie or buying an audiobook. Google Play Points first launched in Japan in September 2018 and came to South Korea in April of this year. The US program has four levels, Bronze through Platinum and points are worth more the higher the level you reach. Points can be used on a few dozen apps as well as some charitable causes. Google funds the points so developers don't lose any money by participating. | https://techcrunch.com/2019/11/04/google-plays-u-s-store-adds-a-rewards-program-with-points-for-purchases-downloads-more/
| :38 | tm | Researchers from Tokyo's University of Electro-Communications and the University of Michigan have demonstrated how lasers could activate voice assistants. Microphones in mobile devices and smart speakers use micro-electro mechanical systems or MEMS to detect vibration in the air from sound and convert it to electrical signals. The diaphragm used in MEMS to detect sound also reacts to variations in laser light. So a laser pointed at a MEMS microphone and modulated properly is read as voice by the mic but you can't hear it. To pull this off an attacker would need a laser source, like a laser pointer, a laser driver and audio amplifier. The laser driver is intended for lab use so requires experience to assemble properly. The researchers tested Apple, Amazon, Google and Facebook devices and found that almost all of the smart speakers registered the commands from at least 164 feet away, though an iPhone was only vulnerable from a range of around 33 feet, and two tested Android phones were only controlled within 16 feet. | https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2019/11/researchers-hack-siri-alexa-and-google-home-by-shining-lasers-at-them/
| :42 | sl | Facebook announced a corporate rebranding with an all-caps version of the word Facebook in grey, or whatever color fits with a sub-brand like Instagram or WhatsApp. Those brands will have the new logo in the form of "from FACEBOOK" at the bottom of pages. The idea is to distinguish the Facebook company from the Facebook social network. To be clear the social network is not changing its logo. | https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-50300142

| :46 | tm | Freedom House issued its internet freedom rankings, finding a worldwide decline. Iceland and Estonia remained at the top fo the charts. China and Iran are at the bottom. While censorship is one fo the factors it measures, disinformation and propaganda have seen significant increases. Freedom House president Mike Abramowitz said “Many governments are finding that on social media, propaganda works better than censorship.” Surveillance, which has a chilling effect on speech, also is not eh rise. The US and China have both expanded monitoring of social media. Freedom House was founded in 1941 by Wendell Wilkie and Eleanor Roosevelt and is currently 86% funded by US government grants. | https://techcrunch.com/2019/11/04/disinformation-censorship-freedom-house/
| :49 | sl | Micron's revenue dropped 23%. Seagate revenue dropped 25%. Samsung reported a 52% fall in profit. This is not great news for their investors but it's excellent news if you're building a PC. PC parts in general have been getting cheaper all year. A 16GB DDR4 kit that might have cost you north of $150 in recent memory, now sells for around $75. And with singles day coming in China 11/11 and Black Friday to follow in the US at the end of the November, deals on already cheap parts are going to be very attractive if you like to build or modify your desktop. 49 | Regarding the Airpods Pro and their new noise cancelling feature. I had the opportunity to attend some live music this weekend and forgot my earplugs. I did however have the new Airpod Pros in my pocket. Since I was wearing my Apple Watch, I knew that the ambient sound levels were around 110 decibels sustained. However popping in my airpods and turning on the noise reduction prevented my getting any tinnitus the next day. So while that probably isn't an advertised use of them, it worked great in my case and I'm thankful for having had them. Regarding the data storage on glass. I work for a large research university's library as a programmer and we have VERY large datasets that don't change once established. Something like the glass type of data storage would be perfect for our needs. I'm especially curious how it will could be used for things like our digital collections, eg. the DARE fieldwork recordings. Currently we use a few options (yes even tape backups) one of which is a service like Amazon Glacier, which is super cheap to store and keep but costs a bit more to restore. Having another medium like the glass storage mentioned would be really valuable to us. Thanks for the show! Dave in Madison, WI
