35 | After Action Report: We barely hadn't even reached cruising altitude when an Me110 was chased off by the escort. I thought our general formation was unusually tight today, which helped defensively. A couple of Me109s were sighted as we crossed the coast. The T-bolts dealt with one, Lt Archer put enough shells into the other one to discourage him from pressing his attack. A distance from landfall, some FW190s made an appearance. The Spits got one, but another evaded them by diving straight through their formation. He missed us, came around from our 9, and missed us again although our gunners got some hits on him. Flak was fairly accurate, a near miss taking out the heat in the nose, and distracted my bombardier enough so we only got 20% of our bombs on target. As soon as we cleared the target, Goering's goons got serious. Thank goodness for the Spits, as they limited fighters we had to deal with. Our Top Turret claimed one that got through, as did our Radio and Tail gunners. Rockets were seen to be launched from our rear, but we saw no effect. We decided to stay with the formation in spite of lack of heat for the crew up front, which was a good thing since the Krauts continued to swarm. Thank goodness for the Brits! Our gunners put paid to a 190 that got through. As the French coast disappeared over the horizon, I dropped to 10,000' as the guys up front were really cold, although uncomplaining. We were able to hide under the overcast and escaped detection. Flying at low altitude was fortuitous as our whole heating system shorted out. Approaching the Italian coast, four Centaurs spotted us. We exchanged hits; they did minor damage while my gunners claimed one kill and lots of damage to their a/c. Shortly after, we were jumped by two 109s. A P-47 spotted us and chased one off while my gunners claimed the other one. We landed with no issues. My crew is pretty unhappy with the board, since they only confirmed 2 out of 5 enemy a/c claimed. Respectfully Submitted; 1stLt Tom Hendrickson | |||||||
