I instigated the award of Open Educational Practitioner badges using Credly and shared these with the language teaching community in the UK and found there was very little awareness of what #OEP means. I am the Chair of the Open Education Special Interest Group and we regularly run webinars to showcase open education themes from our community site. I identify professionally as an open educational practitioner online and regularly produce and share resources through multiple channels to support use of Creative Commons licences and greater understanding of the value of open practice in education. I recently ran an institutional project (WIHEA #knowhow) to disseminate practical approaches to going open. It is important that practitioners understand how to share safely online and how to manage their intellectual property, I believe that understanding amongst teachers often emerges from observation of practices modelled by the community and therefore it helps to demonstrate how open practice can be beneficial to learners and teachers alike. Language learning should be equally accessible to all if we are to build a fairer world in which there is greater empathy and understanding of others.
