36 | I presented at the Kansas 2021 Foreign Language OER Conference, focusing on the creation of OER materials by Spanish language students as part of the Feliz en la Comunidad service-learning program. Feliz en la Comunidad: is a community outreach program that, since 2014, allows students enrolled in SPAN 220, SPAN 240 and SPAN260 to work with various schools in the greater Los Angeles area. Through this service-learning program, students practice their Spanish, teaching, and leadership skills while increasing their involvement in Los Angeles’ culturally and socially diverse neighborhoods. In this program, University Spanish language students create materials in Spanish as part of their course requirements. The materials our students create are posted in our Department’s website and are later shared with different schools in the Los Angeles area where Spanish is taught. Examples of such materials include: videos of students reading short stories followed by comprehension questions, worksheets, games and other extension activities. These supplementary Spanish activities are especially designed to support elementary, middle and high-school teachers. Students use free online resources to create their own videos, PP presentations and Pear Deck. For example, they draw readings from https://www.readinga-z.com/worldlanguages/spanish/leveled-books/, https://magicblox.com/?readinglevel=All&category=All&features=All&field_language_tid=189&sort_by=created&sort_order=ASC or https://spanishmama.com/online-spanish-books-for-free/. In this program, University Spanish language students also teach beginning Spanish lessons to elementary, middle, and high school learners. Classes will be conducted in person, recorded or taught via Zoom. These classes may cover such topics as vocabulary sets for food, sports, hobbies, or review basic grammar points such as regular -ar verb conjugations gustar and others. Students use free online resources as examples to create their own lessons. One example can be found here: https://dornsife.usc.edu/latin-american-and-iberian-cultures/revista-cede/ The presentation aimed to demonstrate the benefits such a program provides to both the student teachers and student learners, the elementary and secondary instructors, and the greater language teaching and learning community that will now have free access to these valuable materials. Materials are also directly shared with the Spanish Consulate in Los Angeles and several school with bilingual programs. Examples of the materials created can be found here: https://dornsife.usc.edu/latin-american-and-iberian-cultures/our-service-learning-programs/ |
