2	What is a circuit breaker and why is it important?	Is it ever dangerous to reset a circuit breaker?	The power is out to the whole house, but it’s not a problem with the electrical grid. What happened?
3	What is a circuit breaker and why is it important?	Is it ever dangerous to reset a circuit breaker?
4	Most modern buildings use circuit breakers to prevent electrical overloads. A circuit breaker does this by “tripping” -- breaking the offending circuit and cutting off the electricity. Once this occurs, the circuit breaker can be reset from the breaker box and electricity can be restored.	In cases of flooding around the breaker box or significant damage to the breaker box, it is wisest to have an electrician come by to address the problem due to the increased risk of electrocution. Otherwise, resetting a breaker is safe and relatively easy, though it is wisest to use a light source when resetting a circuit breaker in the dark.
5			Likely the main circuit breaker tripped and cut off power to the whole house. Most of the circuit breakers in your breaker box are simple breakers and only control specific circuits in your house. The main breaker controls all the electricity in the house. Resetting the main circuit breaker is the same procedure as the simple circuit breakers.

10	How do I avoid tripping circuit breakers?
11	Make sure that you don’t overload the circuits in your home with appliances or devices. Circuits in different parts of the house are designed to withstand a certain amount of electricity. If too many appliances or devices are plugged into outlets on the same circuit, the breaker will likely trip due to an impending overload. Similarly, an appliance or device that uses more electricity than the circuit was intended for will also cause a breaker to trip, as will an appliance or device with faulty wiring. There is also the potential that the wiring in the house is causing the breaker to trip. In order to discover if that is the case, unplug all the appliances in the offending area and reset the breaker. If the breaker immediately trips again, it is likely a wiring issue and you should call an electrician.
12		How do I reset a circuit breaker?	What would happen if I tied something around a circuit breaker to force it to remain in the “ON” position?
13		Unplug the appliances or devices that you think may have caused the breaker to trip and find the breaker box in your home. It is usually either behind a large rectangular panel inside the house or in a large box outside the home. Opening the panel will reveal a number of switches, which are usually labeled with the circuit they correspond to. A singular tripped circuit breaker will have the switch pointing the opposite way of the other switches to the “OFF” position. To reset a tripped breaker, flip the switch to the “ON” position and feel the switch click in place. If a breaker will not reset, the circuit is likely still overloaded.

15			A circuit breaker will still trip in the event of an overload and now you have to untie the circuit breaker to reset it. Even in the event that you prevent a circuit breaker from tripping, you significantly increase the risk of starting an electrical fire or other dangerous happenings. Circuit breakers are an important safety tool and one should not attempt to disable them.
