20 | jry | A West Virginia former coal mine is the site of Virgin Hyperloop’s new Hyperloop Certification Center, which is designed to prepare the technology for implementation. Back in 2019, 17 states participated in bids to secure the spot, but a bi-partisan effort to choose West Virginia was backed by both Senator Joe Manchin and Governor Jim Justice. The facility will work on safety testing, boarding-and-disembarkation methods for passengers, and passenger comfort. Virgin Hyperloop's Nevada facility called DevLoop will continue work on core technology. | https://www.engadget.com/virgin-hyperloop-cerfification-center-west-virginia-143822294.html

Several other justices including Chief Justice Roberts were sympathetic with Oracle's copyright claim. Justice Gorsuch raised questions about whether appeals courts were sufficiently deferential to a jury finding in Google's favor. A decision is expected by the end of June. | https://www.cnbc.com/2020/10/07/supreme-court-hears-google-v-oracle-software-copyright-case.html

23 | jry | The US Department of Justice announced it seized 92 domains linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that were used to "unlawfully engage in a global disinformation campaign." These included four meant to look like legitimate news outlets. Google initially tipped off the DOJ about the campaign. The websites were closed for violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act, which requires foreign entities to discloses sources of information when trying to influence US public opinion. Visiting the seized domains now displays an FBI notice. | https://www.zdnet.com/article/us-seizes-iranian-government-domains-masked-as-legitimate-news-outlets/
24 | tm | The UK House of Commons defence committee issued a report finding that "It is clear that Huawei is strongly linked to the Chinese state and the Chinese Communist Party, despite its statements to the contrary. This is evidenced by its ownership model and the subsidies it has received." While the report warns that it should not "succumb to ill-informed anti-China hysteria", it still commands bringing forward the date by which no Huawei 5G equipment can be used in telecom networks from 2027 to 2025 if necessary. It did not find a threat to encrypted communications. | https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-54455112
25 | sl | Samsung forecasts its Q3 profit will jump 58% to its highest in two years, beating expectations. US restrictions on Huawei and anti-China sentiment in India reduced demand for Huawei's handsets, boosting Samsung sales. Huawei also made larger orders for Samsung chips ahead of US restrictions on the purchases. Samsung also sold more home appliances likely due to pandemic-related lockdowns. The numbers come in a regulatory filing ahead of a more detailed earnings report later this month. | https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKBN26S3NQ

It will also add a box to the top of Facebook and Instagram stating whether outlets like Reuters have reported a winner or not. | https://www.theverge.com/2020/10/7/21506798/facebook-ban-political-ads-after-us-presidential-election-trump-biden-results-notification
30 | :41 | sl | A bot using OpenAI's GPT-3 language model was posting on AskReddit for a week before it was uncovered. The bot went under the username thegentlemetre and posted several hundred comments. Philip Winston noticed the amount of posting got suspicious and posted that he thought it was using GPT-3. The developer of Philosopher AI which runs on GPT-3 responded that it thegentlemetre was using the service. Philosopher AI does not permit automated use of the service and blocked the Reddit bot. Thegentlemetre's most popular post was a story about a colony of humans living in elevator shafts. The account posted twice Wednesday with shorter - possibly human - written responses. One post suspected the bot wouldn't fare well on another forum, to which thegentlemetre responded "you're probably right" and another pointed out thegentlemetre was not a person to which the account replied "except I am." | https://www.technologyreview.com/2020/10/08/1009845/a-gpt-3-bot-posted-comments-on-reddit-for-a-week-and-no-one-noticed/

32 | :45 | tm | Microsoft announced new "principles" for its Windows App Store that many see as a response to Apple. The principles include: - allowing competing app stores on Windows - not blocking an app based on business model or how content is delivered specifically calling out "streamed from the cloud" - letting developers offer alternate payment systems in apps - Timely access to info in interoperability interfaces - allowing all apps that meet "objective standards and requirements, including those for security, privacy, quality, content, and digital safety." - Charge "reasonable fees" and not force a developer to sell something in its app that it doesn't want to - Not prevent developers from communicating directly with its users through their apps - holding Microsoft apps to the same standards as those form other companies - Not using non-public data on apps to create apps that compete with them - Transparency on rules and policies and a fair process to resolve disputes. Microsoft says these principles do not apply to Xbox because that "are specialized devices optimized for a particular use," and have a different business model, presumuably alluding to them being a loss leader for game sales. | https://www.axios.com/microsoft-app-store-playbook-swipes-at-apple-google-9681b58b-4923-44c0-805e-9f3a1dc71bcb.html

37 | :49 | sl | Grocery chain Kroger is partnering with Indianapolis-based startup ClusterTruck to provide on-demand meal delivery. ClusterTruck operates a delivery service for so-called "ghost kitchens" which are created simply to provide online delivery. Kroger is providing kitchen space in its meal preparation areas for Clustertruck staff to cook meals for delivery or in-store pickup. The partnership formalizes a pilot program it tried in Carmel and Indianapolis, Indiana and Columbus, Ohio. Ghost Kitchens, also called Dark Kitchens or Cloud Kitchens is a new startup trend attracting the likes of former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick who started CloudKitchens and another competitor in Pasadena, California called Kitchen United. | https://techcrunch.com/2020/10/08/kroger-one-of-americas-largest-grocery-chains-experiments-with-ghost-kitchens-and-delivery-in-the-midwest/

43 | :52 | The beauty of the internet is being able to do what you love and another perhaps even more beautiful thing about the internet is being able to turn what you love into your career. Brian let's start with how can you tell if your hobby is something that could also be a business?

56 | On Friday's show (10/2/20) there was some confusion expressed about the Spectre x360 having a sensor that can determine if the device is in a bag and reduce power draw accordingly. I think I have an explanation. The x360 is a convertible laptop where the screen can flip 360 degrees (see what they did there?) to switch into tablet mode. Presumably the bag sensing feature would put the device in low powered mode if it was slipped into a bag or sleeve while on and in tablet mode thus saving power and preventing hot bag syndrome. - Brian

83 | Kiril- I've always thought the Bulgarian Pravetz 8 was the first clone on that side of the Iron Curtain. We used to have those in schools and at the library. Wikipedia says there was a predecessor that was the actual clone (they say "nearly identical clone" ): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pravetz_computers That Agat thing is just "inspired primarily by Apple II, though being largely different from it in design". Meh... weak sauce, not a real clone. 😜 I don't know how much is true and how much is a legend, but I remember someone telling me how the guys who cloned the Apple II, build a very precise machine that removes (by grinding) thin layers from the microchips and then takes a picture and that's how they reverse engineered their designs. Just thought Tom will get a kick out of it, to read about the Pravetz. - Kiril | https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pravetz_computers |
