| Let's talk a little more about...
| :34 | sl | Google announced the Pixel 4A phone with a blog post. The Pixel 4A has a 5.81-inch, 2340×1080 60Hz OLED display, a Snapdragon 730G SoC, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage, a 3140mAh battery, a single 12MP camera on the back and an 8MP camera on the front, a USB-C port and a headphone jack. The 4A has a bigger battery than the 4 and a smaller top bezel as it doesn't need the depth sensing required for air gestures. Consensus is it's nicer looking than the 4. It's not as powerful as the iPhone SE or OnePlus Nord, but it is about $100 cheaper. The Pixel 4A is available for pre-order now for $350 shipping August 20. Oh and one more thing. At the end of its post announcing the 4A, Google also announced it will have a 5G version of the 4A for $499 and a 5G Pixel 5 coming in the autumn. | https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020/08/google-finally-announces-the-pixel-4a-for-349/
| :38 | tm | The Content Authenticity Initiative, whose members include Adobe, Twitter and the New York Times, published a white paper outlining an open source standard for a photo and video authentication systems. This standard would be built in hardware like cameras and phones, as well as in editing software like photoshop, creating a digital signature when media is initially captured, and a new signature after each edit. Basically think EXIF metadata that's encrypted so you can't just make it say whatever you want. Users would be able to see a record of changes made to an image. This signature could optionally include the creator's name and location information. Images manipulated on non-standard software or hardware wold be missing the tags thus making them suspect. The group will now work on prototyping the system. There is no timeline for when this standard might become widely available though Adobe announced users of Photoshop and Adobe's Behance social network will gain access to a prototype by the end of the year. | https://www.axios.com/system-for-thwarting-deepfakes-unveiled-d8fc760c-9a44-43fb-a92e-8a86498414d6.html

| :41 | sl | Twitter said on its earnings call that it was looking into the possibility of offering a paid subscription to users, setting off all kinds of the usual wild speculation and fears. TechCrunch reports on a survey making the rounds asking users to evaluate features. Twitter confirmed that the questions are being asked to evaluate options for a membership model. Here are the options asked about in the survey Undo Send: A 30-second window that lets you recall a Tweet before anyone sees it. Custom Colors: Change fonts and themes for your phone or computer. Video Publishing: Up to 5X longer than default with higher maximum resolution of 8192x8192 Badges: Links to businesses. Like a journalist badge that links to the publication they work for. Auto responses: Menu of responses to automatically reply. Social Listening: Conversation around your account, total volume, people and businesses talking most. Likely best for companies. Brand Surveys: You can do a survey like the one you're taking within twitter about your brand | https://techcrunch.com/2020/07/31/twitter-survey-reveals-the-subscription-options-its-eyeing-including-an-undo-send-option/

| Microsoft talks to buy TikTok's U.S. operations spark ire in China - Reuters | https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-tiktok-idUSKBN24Z0L7
| Microsoft said Sunday it is working on a deal to acquire TikTok's operations in Canada, the US, New Zealand and Australia. Whatever the outcome Microsoft says the discussion will end by September 15. Microsoft may invite other US investors to take minority stakes but despite earlier reports at this point it looks like Microsoft will be the majority owner of whatever it buys. Bytedance would retain no interest. 70% of the outside capital investment in Bytedance is from the US and minority stakes are likely to stilll play a part. Some investors in Bytedance could sue if it's seen as an unfavorable outcome. (Fred Hu, chairman of China's Primavera Capital Group told Reuters that) PRESSURE Late last week and into the weekend there were several US statements to the the press that vaguely threatened to ban TikTok in the US somehow. Various theories on how that could be done but nothing substantial there. President Trump has apparently told Microsoft that Bytedance has 45 days to sell TikTok or cease operations in the US. The President has said it has to benefit the US Treasury and he thinks it should be for all of TikTok not just 30%. Microsoft said it iscommitted to "providing proper economic benefits to the United States, including the United States Treasury." The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States opened a review in November of the ByteDance acquisition of Musical.ly which became TikTok. Musical.ly was located in Shanghai and Santa Monica. CFIUS is reportedly involved the negations between Bytedance and Microsoft. | WHAT MICROSOFT WOULD GET 1,000 US employees User base from 226 million downloads in the four Microsoft-targeted regions Security Challenge Microsoft would have to make sure that all private data of TikTok’s American users is transferred to and remains in the United States and deleted from servers outside the country after it is transferred. (TikTok says US user data is stored in US with backup in Singapore) WHAT HAPPENS TO THE REST OF TIK TOK MICROSOFT DOESN'T BUY? The Sun reported that Bytedance would announce it's intention to to headquarters the rest of TikTok in London. Questions about how or whether Microsoft TikTok would interoperate with the TikTok in the rest fo the world. REACTION IN CHINA ByteDance Sunday said it faced “complex and unimaginable difficulties” in going global. CEO Zhang Yiming under fire on Weibo as an example of a "public intellectual" a term used in China to belittle entrepreneurs who appear to promote western values. Ane xamnple: “Zhang Yiming used to praise the US for allowing debate, unlike in China, where opinions are one-sided. Now he got a slap in the face, why doesn’t he go argue with the US?” Several posts called Zhang unpatriotic for negotiating the sale. Zhang's Weibo account has been suspended. EFFECT ON CHINA BUSINESSES? Likely little. Few were making the jump with games from TenCent the nearest to TikTok. Most don't even take US market as a possibility focusing on Southeast Asia, Africa and South America.
| WHY MICROSOFT - Could be because of LinkedIn (and Bing). Opens opportunities to expand advertising business.LinkedIn ad revenue was among Microsoft’s fastest-growing over 2017-2019 (About 11% of U.S. adults use TikTok at least once per week) - Definitely to show what Azure can do with regardd to user data management. WHY MICROSOFT SHOULDN'T WANT IT - bad reputation for content (conspiracy theories, moderation decisions etc. the usual) - bad reputation or data management (normal spying all ad-driven apps do - bad reputation for ties to China. (Whether true or not) | WHAT'S HAPPENING? The President may be imposing his negotiating tactics on the situation. Threaten dire consequences to force a party to the bargaining table then put a tight deadline on to pressure a deal to happen with dire consequences still in the offing if the deal isn't reached in time. Microsoft statement: “Microsoft fully appreciates the importance of addressing the President’s concerns. It is committed to acquiring TikTok subject to a complete security review and providing proper economic benefits to the United States, including the United States Treasury,” - Microsoft was originally reported to only want the data handling (see Azure) with another US party taking over the operation. That may her been too murky and too indefinite for the President - Another theory s that advisers in the party were afraid the President would alienate young voters if TikTok was banned. (Senators Lindsey Graham called it "A win-win"

| Great discussion on accessibility that comes with slowing down and speeding up Netflix shows on Friday. I recently started watching a lot of K-Drama and think I would greatly benefit from slowing down video so I can take my time with the subtitles especially during fast paced scenes. This is a feature that would benefit almost anyone watching content in a language they don't understand and I'm glad Netflix is getting around to it! Best, Gouthaman

| Good day all, I have to say, that I do listen to all podcasts and videos at 1.5x speed. I subscribe to 52 podcasts, so it helps me get through all of them in a timely manner. It also helps to have a one hour commute. Speeding podcasts up also makes you, the hosts, sound more intelligent. 😁 I don't know if you have ever noticed, but smart people talk faster. I work with a bunch of brilliant engineers and they are all fast talkers. Barry New Hampshire, live, freeze and die
