Instagram calls this a test, and says more details on a potential wide-scale rollout will come in the future. | https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/14/21063269/instagram-web-dm-test-launch-browser-access-messages-facebook

Epic says that beyond Fortnite, $251 million represents sales of third-party games, excluding coupons and excluding promotional funding Epic has given to developers. | https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/14/21064951/epic-game-store-users-number-cross-play-revenue-valve-steam

Barr said "Apple has not given us any substantive assistance." Apple rejected the "characterization: by the Attorney General saying they have responded to all FBI requests promptly with all the information it had, which it said is many gigabytes of information. | https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/scottlucas/william-barr-apple-request-unlock-iphones
18 | pb | After years of quarterly declines, the PC market grew between 2.3% and 4.8% in Q4 2019, according to research firms Gartner and IDC, a boost of between 0.6% and 2.7% over 2018. IDC also says 2019 was “the first full year of PC growth since the market grew 1.7% in 2011.” | https://venturebeat.com/2020/01/13/pc-shipments-q4-2019/
19 | sl | Verizon Media launched a “privacy-focused” search engine called OneSearch that promises no cookie tracking, no ad personalization, no profiling, no data-storing, and no data-sharing with advertisers. Verizon says as part of its “search optimization process,” it will store a user’s IP address, search query, and user agent on different servers so that it can’t draw correlations between a user’s specific location and their search. | https://venturebeat.com/2020/01/14/verizon-media-launches-onesearch-a-privacy-focused-search-engine/

21 | :34 | pb | A representative from Sony Interactive Entertainment told GamesIndustry.biz that it will not participate in E3 this year, adding, "we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on." Instead Sony says it plans to participate in "hundreds of consumer events" worldwide. Engadget notes that E3 attendance declined from 69,000 in 2018 to 66,000 in 2019. By comparison, Gamescom has drawn approximately 370,000 people for the past two years. The ESA, which puts on E3, opened the conference to the public in 2017 and appears to be moving the conference to appeal more to fans and influencers. | https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2020-01-11-playstation-will-not-participate-in-e3-2020

23 | :38 | sl | Google announced Chrome tests Tuesday to start implementing its privacy sand box proposals from last year. Among the proposals are a privacy budget that places an upper limit on the data a website can collect, and a trust token so sites can tell you're not an untrustworthy actor like a bot or spammer, without needing to track you. Bigger than these, Google plans to phase out support for third-party cookies within two years. And Chrome will stop updating the "user-agent string" that gives data on things like browser version and OS. The string is used as part of fingerprinting which can track a browser without using cookies. An alternative called client hints is in development to developers can still know what features run. | https://www.cnet.com/news/google-chromes-privacy-changes-will-hit-the-web-later-this-year/
24 | :41 | tm | Microsoft issued patches for Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 and 2019 fixing an exploit ranked by Microsoft as 1, the second most severe in Microsoft's ratings system. The flaw was discovered by the US NSA. The NSA flagged the bug but did not say when it discovered it or give details. Security researcher Brian Krebs wrote that his sources told him the bug was in crypt32.dll, which controls “certificate and cryptographic messaging functions in the CryptoAPI.” The flaw in crypt32.dll could be used to spoof the digital signature of a piece of software, making malware look legitimate. It could also compromise Windows authentication and sensitive browser datas. | https://www.engadget.com/2020/01/14/microsoft-patching-flaw-found-by-nsa/

26 | :43 | sl | Livers for transplant can only be stored on ice for 24 hours before transplant. A team from the University of Zurich has developed a machine that can keep human livers alive for seven days outside the body. The machine re-creates the pressure found inside the body, and pumps oxygen, blood, and nutrients and removes waste products. Algorithms adjust the mix of nutrients. The machine was tested on 10 human livers deemed too damaged for transplant. Six survived and even seemed healthier, with lower levels of compounds linked to injury. The researchers now need to show the machine works on transplantable livers and that livers stored with the machine are safe when transplanted into patients. | https://www.technologyreview.com/f/615042/a-machine-can-now-keep-livers-alive-outside-the-body-for-a-week/
27 | :46 | tm | Google's AI department posted to its blog that it has used machine learning to make fast accurate weather forecasts The paper has yet to be peer reviewed but the researchers believe that their system can generate accurate rainfall predictions up to six hours in advance at 1km resolution with just minutes of calculation. Existing calculations take hours to generate forecasts, though they can do so more than 6 hours in advance and with more complex data. The US federal agencies processes up to 100 TB and take around 6 hours to complete. That limits it to 3-4 runs per day with resulting forecasts based on 6 hour-old data. The Google algorithm was trained on US NOAA radar data from 2017-2019. Instead of modeling the weather it makes predictions about radar data. The Google algorithm was only outperformed by existing methods when attempting to make forecasts more than 6 hours ahead of time. Google is among several companies, including IBM and Monsanto researching the use fo AI in weather forecasts. | https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/14/21065095/google-ai-weather-forecast-predictions-rainfall-research

It's easy to criticize Quibi. It's easy to pull the concept apart and talk about why it won't work. But Patrick, you are starting to think maybe Quibi make sense. | https://www.engadget.com/2020/01/08/quibi-mobile-video-turnstyle/

45 | @profmetcalf wanted to chime into our discussion about Twitter troll scores, there was a question about what the ramifications would be of a high troll score. In my mind, I see a slider in the user‘s twitter settings that allows the user to decide just how much trolling they are OK with. If a troll has a higher score than you are willing to accept, you would not see their content. Rather, you might see the three dots (…) Indicating something is below your acceptable score. This should make it easy enough to provide the functionality we want – meaning the users are in control of what they want to see. You could even let someone quickly access their preferences by clicking the ellipses.
