Apple labels vintage products as those that haven't been sold since more than five and less than seven years ago. Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod and Apple TV vintage products will still receive hardware servicing from Apple service providers and Apple Retail Stores. Obsolete products were discontinued more than seven years ago, and Apple won't service these products. | https://www.imore.com/apple-adds-ipod-shuffle-4th-gen-and-ipod-nano-7th-gen-vintage-list

19 | tm | UK Cyber-spy agency GCHQ says its National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) believes Huawei has failed to tackle security flaws in equipment used in the UK's telecoms networks, despite previous complaints. It also said a vulnerability "of national significance" had happened in 2019 but had been fixed before it could be exploited. The agency said that while some improvements had been made by Huawei, it didn't have confidence they were sustainable, and the board could only provide "limited assurance that all risks to UK national security" could be mitigated in the long-term. | https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-54370574

28 | :38 | jry | No, the two political parties in the US can't agree on much but here's something they do agree on: Their attitude toward tech companies. The US Senate Commerce Committee voted unanimously to subpoena the CEOs of Facebook, Google and Twitter to answer questions about Section 230 of the US Communications Decency Act, AKA Safe Harbor. It took a little cajoling though. Ranking Senate Democrat Maria Cantwell of Washington opposed the subpoenas until language about "media domination" and privacy was added to the agenda. | https://www.cnbc.com/2020/10/01/facebook-google-and-twitter-ceos-sub.html

32 | :42 | tm | A few followups form the big Google announcements yesterday. Google's Rick Osterloh told the Verge that gestures and face recognition, from the Pixel 4, which are gone on the Pixel 5, will return in future models. He said the Project Soli sensor was too expensive for the price point they wanted to hit with the Pixel 5. The Google Play Movies and TV app for Android has been renamed Google TV. The app collects your purchases of movies and TV shows and lets you play them. Now it can also integrate other streaming services like Netflix so you can use the app to find movies and TV shows whether you bought or rented them from Google Play or find them at other services you use. We mentioned the Watchlist in the Google TV interface on the new Chromecast yesterday. It will track what you watch and let you add things to it. It also integrates with the Google Search watchlist feature and the wishlist in the Google Play Store including the Google TV app. | https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2020/9/30/21496318/google-soli-radar-motion-sense-rick-osterloh-pixel-5

36 | :46 | sl | Who wants a robot that hangs from your ceiling like a bat? Toyota hopes some of you said yes. Among the prototypes shown off from Toyota Robotics in California, was a gantry robot that hangs from the ceiling and uses sensors and two arms to complete tasks like cleaning and loading a dishwasher. The gantry design was used to eliminate the robot taking up floor space and folding up out of the way when not operating. The robots are trained by having humans control actions, like wiping down a table, using VR controllers, the motions are captured and used to train gate robots. The robots demonstrated are prototypes meant for further development. They're not ready for commercial application yet. | https://www.theverge.com/2020/10/1/21496692/toyota-robots-tri-research-institute-home-helping-gantry-ceiling-machine

47 | Google plans to spend more than $1 billion over the next three years to create something called Google news Showcase. The product focuses on giving Publishers control of what appears in panels. Participating publishers will be able to package stories together in panels, include timelines and bullet points and eventually add audio and video as well. Panels will be surfaced within Google Showcase by an algorithm but publishers themselves will curate what's in the panel. Users will be able to personalize feeds to follow specific publishers. Google will offer free access to some paywalled stories in order to help drive subscriptions and share anonymized data with he publishers about their performance. Publishers will be selected country by country. Google will prioritize publishers with established audiences that serve a community. Google News showcase is launching in Google News on Android. It will eventually come to iOS and also Google's Discover and Search products. Google has signed deals with more than 200 publishers in Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, the U.K. and Australia. Google News showcase will launch first in Brazil and Germany. German outlets include Handelsblatt, Der Spiegel, and Infobae. But not Axel Springer - publishers of Bild and Die Welt. Axel Springer pushed the first German law that caused Google to stop showing snippets in Google News. An EU Copyright Directive requires Google and others to license snippets and France has required Google to negotiate for those rights, not just stop using them.

58 | Inácio Lanari Bó wanted to give their two cents on the Google antitrust case in China. We said yesterday that it didn't make sense domestically but maybe it would make sense for exporters like Xiaomi. Bó explains why that might in fact be the case, writing: "Google services is a fundamental input into the production of smartphones for markets outside China [[Like Xiaomi for instance]]. And Google *does* participate in that market, selling licenses and signing contracts with all these producers who sell phones with Google services. That is, Google's dominant position gives it "almost monopoly power" on the competition for exports between smartphone producers in China. China's domestic market is not at stake in this issue. A (perhaps imperfect) analogy would be if you had a company in the U.S. that exports trains that are incompatible with american railways, using steel imported by some other country. The U.S. enforces its antitrust laws abroad in this kind of situation: "For example, the Department would take action against a foreign cartel aimed at limiting purchases from U.S. exporters or depressing the prices they receive, or a boycott of American goods or services organized by competitors in foreign markets." Love the show. Have been listening since BOL and been a supporter since the very beginning. | https://www.justice.gov/archive/atr/public/press_releases/1992/211137.htm
