24 | Let's talk about CES. We'll start byby highlighting some of the CES annoucnements getting the most buzz in the last 24 hours.
25 | :32 | sl | Google has begun making it a tradition to announce new Google Assistant features at CES. Telling it "read this page" will have the Assistant read the relevant text of a webpage. You can now schedule actions by saying things like "Turn on the lights at 6 PM". On smart displays, you can create sticky notes by saying things like "Leave a note that says Don't forget your power cord." And also on smart displays you can create speed dial numbers for easy Assistant access. AND Interpreter mode is launching out of beta to let businesses add it through partnerships with SONIFI and Volara. And on the privacy front, you can also now say "That wasn't for you" to tell the Assistant to delete the record of accidental activations. You an also do a few other privacy settings like delete everything you said this week. Clear cache and cookies and more. All of this will come in that magical time known as "later this year." | https://techcrunch.com/2020/01/07/heres-everything-google-announced-at-ces-2020/

28 | :34 | tm | The Bluetooth SIG introduced new Bluetooth features under the umbrella term Bluetooth LE Audio. The Low Complexity Communication Codec or LC3 will reduce power consumption while increasing audio quality. It will offer an alternative to the power hungry SBC codec and Qualcomm's proprietary AptX. Bluetooth LE Audio will also officially support hearing aids, working with more devices including TVs. A new "broadcast" feature could let a movie theater audience use Bluetooth headphones, something that could help those with hearing aids as well. And multi stream will let each earbud receive its own stream rather than having to communicate with each other. Multistream will also allow sharing one audio source to multiple users. Apple has a proprietary solution of its own for this. Specs for Bluetooth LE Audio will come out through the first half of 2020 meaning we'll see the first devices to use it by the holidays with most coming in 2021. | https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/6/21050631/bluetooth-hearing-aids-sharing-audio-le-lc3-codec-ces-2020
29 | :35 | sl | Arduino launched a low-code platform and modular hardware system for IoT development. Arduino Portenta H7 includes a crypto-authentication chip, Wifi, Bluetooth LE, LTE and Narrowband IoT modules. It runs on either the Cortex-M7 or M4 32-bit ARM microcontrollers. It runs Arm's Mbed OS and supports Arduino Code, Python and Javascript. It's meant for designing industrial applications, edge processing solutions and robotics. It's available to beta testers now and coming to all in February.
30 | :37 | tm | WiFi 6 routers are de rigger here at CES but a couple of Netgear models seem to be getting a little more attention than others. The Nighthawk Mesh WiFi System 6 is a dual-band mesh system supporting the WiFi EasyMesh standard, starting as a two-pack for $229.99 available this month with a three-pack and individual nodes available in March. It has 2x2 arrays for both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks and no dedicated backhaul channel at launch with a max capacity of four nodes in a system. So yes it's inexpensive but also not beefy. Netgear says it will cover up to 1500 square feet at 1.8Gbps throughput, though Netgear doesn't recommend it for Gigabit homes, saying its bets for 300 to 400 Mbps service. Netgear also announced the Nighthawk M5 5G mobile hot spot supporting millimeter wave and sub-6 5G implementations and outputting WiFi 6. It will be available unlocked or from carriers starting in May. Netgear says it should support speeds up to 4Gbps and includes a gigabit ethernet port. Netgear also released a WiFi 6 extender for your ISP's modem and a DOCSIS3.1 WiFi 6 cable modem.

32 | :39 | sl | Samsung's STAR Labs subsidiary released some details of the NEON Project teased last week. The idea is to make digital avatars you can interact with as if they were real people. They will be accessible by screen or possibly as holographic displays. STAR Labs suggests they could be teachers, financial advisors, healthcare providers or a concierge, as examples. A NEON could also be an actor, TV anchor, I suppose a video podcast host too. STAR Labs says they can be based on real people but it does not intend to make replicas and because its powered by machine learning, the avatars can learn from experience. More details on cost, implementation etc. will likely come at NEONWORLD 2020 taking place later this year.

Sony announced the 48-inch Master Series A9S, its smallest 4K OLED TV ever. (LG announced a 48-inch OLED TV as well, likely both use LG Display panels. So expect more 48-inch OLEDS from more manufacturers). The 48-inch A9S from Sony uses Sony's Acoustic Surface technology which projects sound from the panel to make it appear to come from the picture. Of course Sony also announced its 75 and 85-inch 8K Sony Z8H. It uses Frame Tweeter to vibrate the frame to create sound, which can be directionally delivered based on what's happening on screen. The Z8H also runs Google Assistant. | https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/6/21052177/sony-2020-tv-lineup-8k-4k-lcd-size-specs-performance-ces

83 | tm | Concept cars are always a little silly because they don't have to have relationship to reality in any way. But sometimes they're just too concept to ignore. Witness the Avatar-themed Mercedes-Benz Vision AVTR. James Cameron helped design it. The entire rear of the car is covered in 33 "bionic flaps" which people who don't work for Mercedes will call "scales." Somehow you use the flaps to communicate with people outside the car. Also the wheels are spheres so the car can easily move sideways and diagonally. It's meant to be a design for an autonomous car so there's no steering wheel but instead has an oval-shaped controller that can pop up from the center console. For some reason it vibrates along with your breathing and heart rate. And because its a concept car, its powered by a compostable graphene-based organic battery cells that don't require rare earth minerals. | https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/7/21054257/mercedes-benz-avatar-avtr-concept-ces-2020

OnePlus says the feature could make it possible to have more cameras on the back of a phone without having to have ugly camera bumps. The glass can also turn semi-transparent to act as a neutral density filter for shooting in bright conditions. ---- OnePlus is also working on a new feature in its OxygenOS called Optimized Charging which charges the battery only to 80 percent while you're asleep and then fills it up to 100% starting a hundred minutes before it thinks you'll wake up. This should help extend the battery's total lifetime. OnePlus says it will store all sleep data locally.
