21 | Hello and welcome to my science class for the 2021 - 2022 school year. My name is David Jenkins, and I have been a science teacher here at AMS my entire career for the last 24 years. I am a father of two wonderful girls, Olivia (17) and Evelyn (15), and a big black dog named Rocky. Here is a list of terms that desribe me and/or my interests: Dad, Fly-Fisherman, Mountain Biker, Outdoorsman, Nature-Lover, Conventional-Fisherman, Science Nerd, Teacher!!! :)
22 | How did I end up at AMS? Well that answer takes us way back to 1984 when I became a counselor at an all-boys YMCA camp in Northern Minnesota after graduating from Westchester High School here in Houston. I worked at Camp Warren for 6 summers teaching kids how to camp, ride horses, shoot rifles, sail, and numerous other outdoor skills. I look back on that job as being the best job I could ever possibly have. When I was away from Warren, I attended the University of New Hampshire, eventually receiving a degree in Business Administration.
23 | I moved back to Houston in 1990, found a job in accounting for a law firm that specialized in asbestos litigation and other personal injuries. 5 years came and went, and I realized that accounting was definitely not for me. So what did I do? In July of 1995 I hopped in my truck, headed West, and took a 12,000 mile trip around the U.S. searching for fish, natural beauty, and searching for what I really wanted to do with my life. 6 months later I returned, decided that teaching was likely the "Best Fit" for my interests and talents, and enrolled at the University of Houston School of Education.
24 | By the summer of '97 all I needed was an internship year of teaching to get certified, and AMS gave me that opportunity with a position teaching 6th grade science. I have been here ever since. I feel a deep sense of loyalty and committment to Alief Middle School, and have been so fortunate to teach so many amazing young people for the last 24 years. I am so excited about learning with your children, helping them grow and master the science concepts we will investigate this year, and helping them build a sense of curiosity about our natural world, confidence in their own abilities, and a growth mindset. This will be a great year!
