3 | No. 25 Riverside-Brookfield | 3 | Whitney Young | 0 | Final |
4 | By Peter Hamot Area Scout, Staff Writer No. 25 Riverside-Brookfield squared off with Whitney Young in the Regional Finals on Saturday morning and saw the Bullldogs win by the score of 3-0. Early offense and dominant starting pitching proved to be the recipe for success, as the Bulldogs will look to continue their stellar season in Sectionals this coming week. Already having one of the most historic seasons in IHSA history, Notre Dame commit Owen Murphy just continues to keep rolling no matter the stage. The right-hander fired a complete game shutout while only surrendering one hit, one walk and striking out 15 on just 87 pitches. Murphy was virtually un-hittable, working his fastball in the 93-95 mph range early while topping out at 96 mph - paired with a devastating breaking ball and cutter combination that kept the Whitney Young offense guessing throughout. The Bulldogs took and early lead in the bottom of the first inning. The aforementioned Murphy started things off with a one-out double to the left-field gap, later coming around to score on a single up the middle from Sean McDermott to make it 1-0 at the time. Riverside was able to push across two more runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and an RBI single from Luke Yachin, making it 3-0 after two. Uncommited junior Joshua Schmidt got the start for Whitney Young and settled in nicely after his first two innings; finishing with a final line of six innings, six hits, three earned runs, seven strikeouts and just one walk. Notable Performances: Owen Murphy (Riverside-Brookfield): 7IP, 1H, 0R, 15K, 1BB - 1-for-3, 2B, R Sean McDermott (Riverside-Brookfield): 1-for-3, RBI Luke Yochin (Riverside-Brookfield): 1-for-3, RBI Joshua Schmidt (Whitney Young): 6IP, 6H, 3ER, 7K, 1BB | ||||
