3 | No. 11 O'Fallon | 5 | No. 3 Edwardsville | 3 | Final |
4 | By Digeo Solares Area Scout, Missouri & Illinois In a classic Southwestern conference clash between these two southern Illinois rivals, the Panthers upset Edwardsville to pull within one of the league's first place position. The Tigers drew first blood, scoring on an RBI single from senior Adam Powell in the first and pushing two more across in the second on a mishandled fly ball to right. That was all Edwardsville would muster offensively, as the Panthers scraped their way back from an early deficit as the game went on. R.J. Cole pushed a single to right field following a loud double by junior Xavier Deatherage to get O'Fallon on the board. Then, in the fifth inning, senior Connor Lindsey pummeled a fastball to straight away center field for a two-run blast, evening things up at three apiece. The score held until the top of the eighth, where Deatherage ambushed the third straight breaking ball he saw for a no-doubt blast over the left field fence, pushing O'Fallon ahead 5-3. The Tigers mounted a late rally in the bottom half of the eighth inning, but senior Danny Mack quieted it quickly and secured the Panthers' win. Mack was instrumental on the mound, twirling three scoreless innings while punching out five. Deatherage led the Panthers' offense with three hits and drove in three, while junior backstop Will Millard picked up a pair of hits in the win. | ||||
5 | Oswego East | 2 | Plainfield North | 3 | Final |
6 | By Peter Hamot Area Scout, Staff Writer Plainfield North and Oswego East squared off in what ended up being a favorable day for pitchers. With the wind howling in runs were hard to come by, but the Tigers of Plainfield North were able to come away with the 3-2 victory. The Tigers found themselves down one run heading into the bottom of the second inning, but were able to push across two runs thanks to a couple bases-loaded hit-by-pitches, making it 2-1 at the time. Senior MJ Ansari added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning, ripping a single to left field and scoring Ryan Nelson (2023) who reached base via the walk earlier in the frame and making it 3-1 at the time. Chasing two in the top of the seventh, Eric Lewis (2023) stepped in and delivered a two out double to bring the score to 3-2. Thomas Fitzgerald (Plainfield North, 2023) would then enter the game to try and stop the bleeding, eventually going on to notch a strikeout and end the game. The Wolves of Oswego East got out to an early lead in the top of the first inning thanks to a single off the bat of Cody Haynes (2023), scoring Liam Mitchell (2023) who singled earlier in the inning. Kash Koslowski (2023) put together a gutsy performance on the mound, firing 6.2 innings with five hits, two earned runs, three strikeouts and two walks. The southpaw was cruising through the entire game, only needing 92 pitches for the near complete game. RHP Griffin Sleyko (2023) came out of the 'pen for the Wolves and was dominant over his 4.1 innings of work; allowing just two hits, one earned run and striking out three to three walks. The big right-hander boasted a fastball that worked into the low 80's, pairing off a slurvy breaking ball to keep the Tigers off balance at the plate.
