3 | No. 2 Brother Rice | 13 | No. 3 St. Laurence | 11 | Final |
4 | By Peter Hamot Area Scout, Staff Writer No. 2 Brother Rice and No. 3 St. Laurence squared off for a Chicago Catholic Blue matchup and turned in perhaps the game of the year up to this point. In what looked to be a run-rule waiting to happen, the Vikings of St. Laurence charged back with a nine spot in the bottom of the fifth inning to bring the game within one run after being down 11-1. The Crusaders were able to hold on and secure the win as they took game one of the series by the score of 13-11, improving their record to 24-4 on the year. The Vikings were facing a mercy-rule heading into the bottom half of the fifth inning, chasing 10 runs and down to their final three outs. The Vikings started to slowly chip away; adding two runs with a fielder's choice and an error, but things really started to get interesting after Jesse Contreras (2023) laid down a perfectly placed bunt for a single - also driving in a run to make it 11-4 at the time. Nate Maliska would come up a few batters later and rope a double to right-field, brining the score to 11-6 at the time, also setting up Illinois-Springfield commit Angelo Luna (2022); who would go on to single up the middle and bring home two more runs and make it 11-8 at the time. Johnny Wendling (2023) would follow suit with a single of his own, driving in Luna and bringing the Vikings within two. The final run of the inning came off the bat of Upper-Iowa commit Mikey Gentile (2022), who singled up the middle to score Wendling and bring the score to 11-10 at the time. A two-run homer from Brother Rice's Andrew Ivy Jr. (2022) in the top of the seventh proved to be the difference in the end, as the Vikings would go on to lose by two runs. Anglelo Luna put a charge into one for a solo home run in the bottom half of the seventh, but thats all the Vikings could get rolling in the frame. Brother Rice got out to a commanding lead early on thanks to four straight innings of scoring; with two runs in the first, three in the second, one in the third and five runs in the fourth putting the Crusaders out to a commanding 11-1 lead midway through the fourth. In the top of the first, Iowa Western Will Flanigan (2022) commit put the Crusaders on the board with an RBI single, followed by Purdue commit Amir Gray (2023) - who doubled in two more runs to make it 3-0 at the time. Louisville commit Zion Rose (2023) stepped up in the top of the second inning and lifted a ball over the left field wall, extending the Crusaders' lead to 5-0 at the time. The home runs would keep flowing, as uncommitted juinor Bryce Nevils drove a solo shot to left field to make it 6-0 after two and a half innings of play. In the top of the fourth, the Crusaders took advantage of some walks and hit-by-pitches to push across five more runs, highlighted by Will Flanigan's second RBI of the day with a single up the middle and an RBI single from Heartland commit Beau Polickey. Indiana commit Dylan Warda got the nod and was lights out over his four innings of work for the Crusaders; scattering four hits with one earned run and two strikeouts. 5 | Willowbrook | 5 | Hinsdale South | 3 | Final |
6 | By Drew Locascio Illinois Scouting Director Hinsdale South hosted Willowbrook in game one of a West Suburban Gold conference matchup with conference title implications on the line. Hinsdale South jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and held it until Willowbrook tied the game in the top of the fourth inning with two runs of their own. Starting pitcher Max Vaisvilla and Colin Slivka delivered run-scoring singles in the frame. Hinsdale South was able to jump ahead 3-2 with one run in the bottom of the sixth and only needed three outs to pick up the win but Willowbrook had other ideas. THey loaded the bases and with one out Jacob Kutella delivered a game-tying RBI single to left field and catcher Bennett Fleming followed up with what turned out to be the game winning RBI single to left. Vaisvilla tacked on another RBI to give the Warriors of Willowbrook a 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Vaisvilla, a Loras commit, who started on the mound for Willowbrook, tried to finish the complete game but had to exit with two outs and two runners on in the bottom of the seventh. Junior RHP Aidan Pieniazek came in and got the next hitter to fly out to center field, finishing off the comeback and 5-3 win. Vaisvilla battled throughout for Willowbrook and was rewarded with the win. Vaisvilla ended up going 6.2 innings pitched, scattering seven hits, two earned runs, walking two while striking out 13. He worked primarily with a fastball/curveball mix while sitting 85-86 mph early on. North Central commit, 1B Parker Bozzi, started the game 2-for-2, collecting the first two RBIs of the game for Hinsdale South. The second RBI came on a double to the right-field fence. Unsigned Senior LHP Drew Duckhorn got the start for Hinsdale South and picked up the no decision. Duckhorn showed lively stuff and struck out 10 over five innings pitched. He scattered three hits, two runs and walked two while sitting 84-85 mph, touching 86 mph early in his outing. He also showed off an above-average changeup in the mid-to-upper 70’s. Duckhorn looks to be one of the top uncommitted prospects in the state Notable Performances: + Joey Tumilty (Willowbrook): 2-for-4, R, SB + Max Vaisvilla (Willowbrook): 3-for-4, 2 RBI, + Jacob Kutella (Willowbrook): 1-for-2, RBI, R, BB + Eliot Fulscher (Hinsdale South): 2-for-3 | ||||
