4 | By: Kevin Cronin Area Scout, Tech Analyst In tough weather conditions, No. 2 St. Laurence squeaked out a 2-1 win over Providence Catholic to improve to 20-0. Two uncommitted juniors toed the rubber on both sides, in the first game of the series. RHP Dennis Helwig JR. ranked No. 43 overall in the state of Illinois, got the ball for St. Laurence. Southpaw Gavin Gomez of Providence Catholic got the start, Ranked No. 168 overall. No. 2 St. Laurence took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Angelo Luna, Illinois-Springfield commit, got the inning started with a one out double down the right field line. Providence went on to intentionally walk junior Johnny Wendling. Two batters later with two outs, Upper Iowa commit Mikey Gentile singled home Luna to make it 2-1 heading to the seventh. Trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the fourth, uncommitted junior Luke Stulga tied the game with a one out double to right center field scoring Luna. Uncommitted senior Tyler Young gave Providence the early lead in the game. Garcia started the innings with a lead off single. Mrozek followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Garcia to second. Young with a 1-2 count singled home Garcia, for a 1-0 lead at the time. Helwig JR. got the win on with a gutsy performance on the mound, going one batter shy of a complete game. Helwig went 6 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts while allowing one run on seven hits and walked one. Helwig worked with a three pitch mix, fastball, curveball and changeup. The fastball, four seam type with run at times, high spin fastball gets on the hitters, sat 86-89 mph. A curveball with tight 11/5 vertical break down in the zone, sometimes came into the hitter with 10/4 horizontal movement sat 72-73 mph. The changeup with some sink thrown 75-78 mph. Despite taking the loss, Gomez tossed a dominating performance for Providence. Gomez struck out 13 batters in 5 2/3 innings of work while allowing two runs on four hits and walked three. Gomez threw 17 first pitch strikes to 24 batters faced. Gomez predominantly uses a fastball, curveball combination. Fastball with arm-side run, flashed sink at times, sat 83-85 mph. A 1/5 curveball with sharp action, command down in the zone thrown 68-69 mph. 6 | By Peter Hamot Area Scout, Staff Writer No. 17 Minooka squared off against Oswego East on a cold and windy Monday afternoon - with strong starting pitching and some timely hitting eventually lifting Minooka to a 4-1 victory over the Wolves. The Indians were led on the mound by sophomore right-hander Ryan Anderson, who went five shutout innings with no runs, seven strikeouts, one walk and just four hits allowed. Anderson impressed with a lively fastball, reaching up to 85 mph with some arm-side life. He also showcased a sweeping slider at 70-74 mph and a late fading changeup at 77 mph. Minooka got out to an early lead in the second inning thanks to a single from Anthony Forillo (2023), scoring Sully Minor (2023) who reached on a single earlier in the frame, making it 1-0 at the time. Later in the top of the fifth inning, Joliet JC commit Mitch Thomas (2022) doubled to center field, scoring Illinois-Springfield commit Ivan Dahlbeg (2022) who reached base via an error earlier in the inning - extending the Indians' lead to 3-0 at the time. Andrew Mack (2023) went on to single up the middle, scoring Thomas and pushing the lead to 4-0 at the time. Oswego got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a single from Danville Area CC commit Nathan Edders - scoring Josh Polubinski who reached base via a single earlier in the inning, bringing the score to 4-1. Wichita State commit Ashton Izzi got the nod for Oswego East and impressed over his 4.1 innings of work - recording 11 of the 13 outs via the strikeout while not allowing a single walk. Izzi's fastball cruised at 91-93 mph, entering the zone at a tough downward angle and pairing off a tight slider at 80-84 mph, showing depth at times and playing with shorter shape. He also went to a late fading changeup at times to add another look for opposing hitters, 80-82 mph.
