3 | No. 6 Huntley | 10 | Jacobs | 1 | Final |
4 | By Peter Hamot Area Scout, Staff Writer In a rivalry matchup between No. 6 Huntley and Jacobs, it was Huntley who came away victorious in the end by the score of 10-1. Gutsy starting pitching and a late offensive charge proved to be the recipe for success for the Red Raiders, as they advance to the Sectional Finals this Saturday. Huntley found themselves up by three heading to the bottom of the sixth and despite having one of the deepest pitching staffs in the state, they were sill looking to add some insurance. After two walks and a bunt single from McHenry County commit Harout Meyer (2022) loaded the bases with no outs for Lincoln Land commit Chase Jetel (2022), the left-handed hitter went on to lift a ball over the left-field wall for a grand slam - extending the Red Raider's lead to 8-1 at the time. A heads up base-running play from Wichita State commit Brayden Bakes (2023) followed by an RBI single from 2023 Ryan Quinlan pushed the lead to 10-1 after six innings of play. The Red Raiders were led on the mound by Valparaiso commit Adam Guazzo (2022). The senior right-hander fired five shutout innings with four hits, no runs, five strikeouts and no walks. Guazzo was working with a highly effective fastball/slider combination; running his sinking fastball up to 89 mph and ripping off a sharp 10/4 slider in any count at 74-78 mph. The game was locked in a pitcher's duel heading into the bottom of the third inning. That was until the aforementioned Bakes stepped in and drove a ball over the left-center wall for a home run, making it 1-0 at the time. The Red Raiders were putting on a clinic on the basepaths throughout the contest, as they stole another run in the same inning with Joey Garlin (2023) coming in to score from third on a throw to first for a drop-third strke, making it 2-0 at the time. Huntley added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to a two-run blast off the bat of Wisconsin-Whitewater commit Brandon Hanley (2022), pushing the score to 4-0 at the time. Jacobs was able to get on the board in the top of the sixth inning, thanks to a solo-shot from Moraine Valley commit Peter Mitchell (2022), bringing the score to 4-1 at the time. Bradley commit Anthony (2023) Edge toed the mound for Jacobs and threw well despite receiving the loss; going five innings with six hits, three earned runs, four strikeouts and one walk. The right-hander pounded the zone with a heavy sinking fastball in the 85-87 mph range, pairing it off an 11/5 breaking ball at 75-76 mph.
