4 | By Peter Hamot Area Scout, Staff Writer No. 1 Saint Viator and Burlington Central squared off in a non-conference matchup last night and saw the Lions of Viator win by the score of 5-1. The Lions started off their scoring in the bottom of the first inning, with Arizona commit Casey Hintz (2022) reaching base on a hard-hit single through the left side, later coming around to score on an error and making it 1-0 at the time. Joe Bollard would later bring in Zan Von Schlegell with a sac fly to left, bringing the score to 2-0 at the time. The Lions would keep rolling in the second inning, with sophomore Bryan Hatch drawing a lead-off walk to set up Wally Augustyn (2022) - who singled through the right side to bring home Hatch and improve the Lions' lead to 3-0. Augustyn would later score on a passed ball to extend the lead to four after just two innings. The Rockets would get on the board in the top of the third inning thanks to a lead off triple from sophomore Brady Gilroy, who would later score on a fielder's choice and bring the score to 4-1 at the time. Viator would add one more run to their total in the bottom of the fourth - thanks to a heads up base-running play from Arizona commit Tony Pluta (2022). After ripping a single to start the inning, Pluta took advantage of some misplaced fielder's and swiped third to set himself up for Dylan Harer (2023) - who brought him in with a ground ball to second, bringing the score to 5-1. Jake Van Booven (2023) got the nod for the Lions and impressed over his five innings of work; allowing just one earned run with three hits and five strikeouts. Owen Hensler (2022) supplied quality relief for the Rockets out of the 'pen as well, firing 2.1 shutout innings with two hits and one strikeout. 6 | By: Kevin Cronin Area Scout, Tech Analyst No. 8 Lincoln-Way West knocked off district rival Lincoln-Way Central in their first game of the series by a score of 12-8. The Warriors went up 11-0 after two innings, scoring five runs in the first and six runs in the second. In the first inning, Lincoln-Way West jumped ahead to an early 5-0 lead. After the first batter for West got out, the next three batters worked consecutive walks loaded to the bases. Senior Jacob Morris with now two out and in a 1-1 count, hit a long single to left center field clearing the bases. Junior Cam Buckley followed with a single to move Morris into scoring position for junior Tyler Koscinski. Koscinski laced a double to center field bringing home Morris and Buckley. Lincoln-Way West went on to add six more runs in the second inning. A lead off single from Aidan Healy, followed by a double from Louisville commit Cole Crafton and a walk from Kaleb Wilkey loaded the bases for Harrison Scroggins. Scroggins roped a line drive to left field to bring home Healy and Crafton, making it a 7-0. The next batter, Brandon Pritchard, North Central commit, reached on an error to bring in Wilkey. Two batters later, Buckley hit an RBI single to center field to score Scroggins and Pritchard. Buckley advanced to second on the throw. Kozcinski followed with a single advancing Buckley to third. Luke Swallow hit a sacrifice fly to bring home the final run of the inning. Lincoln-Way Central answered in the top half of the third. The Knights scored four runs after the first two hitters got out. A single from Jack Novak and a walk to Louisville commit Collin Mowry kept the inning alive. Braden Meyer reached on an error bringing home Novak. College of Central Florida commit, Nick Signorelli blasted a three run home run to make it an 11-4 ball game. The Knights’ Mowry hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and Connor Husa delivered an RBI double in the sixth making it 11-6 heading to the bottom of the seventh. In the seventh, Mowry recorded his second hit of the games being an RBI double and later came around to score. 8 | By Peter Hamot Area Scout, Staff Writer Burlington Central and Crystal Lake Central squared off at Wintrust Field yesterday evening for a conference rubber match and saw Central win by the score of 10-5. Notched at four runs apiece in the bottom of the fifth, Luke Pedrigi would double to left field and drive in one, giving the Rockets a 5-4 lead at the time. AJ Payton would follow up with a single up the middle to score Pedrigi and push the Rockets lead to two runs. Brady Gilroy came up a few batters later and stroked an RBI single - with Barrett Lewis following suit, singling to left and bringing in another run to push the Rockets' lead to 10-4 at the time. Chasing one run in the bottom of the second, Payton would go on to rip a double to left field, plating both Joshua Rodge and the aforementioned Pedrigi - giving the Rockets a 2-1 lead. A balk and a sac fly would bring home two more runs and extend the Rockets' lead to 4-1 at the time. With the Tigers chasing one run in the top of the fourth, Brian Preshlock would step in and deliver a double to center field, plating one and notching the game at 4-4 for the time being. In the top of the third inning, Ryan Kempf would step in and rip a double to left, scoring Brent Blitek who singled earlier in the frame, bringing the score to 4-2. Braydon Gibour would come up shortly after and single to the right side and bring the score to 4-3 at the time. The Tigers would fight back in the top of the seventh and scrape across one more run thanks to an RBI single from the aforementioned Kempf, but thats all they would be able to muster as they ended up falling by the score of 10-5. Sophomore right-hander Michael Person got the nod and was impressive over his five innings of work. Despite giving up four earned runs, Person struck out seven and only walked one - also boasting a fastball up to 84 mph which he paired most often with a sharp breaking ball, 72-73 mph.
