3 | Springfield | 2 | No. 19 Normal University | 1 | Final |
4 | By Peter Hamot Area Scout, Staff Writer No. 19 Normal University and Springfield squared off at Duffy Bass Field last night and battled it out in their first matchup of the 2022 spring season. The Senators would go on to hold off a late comeback attempt and take home the victory over the Pioneers by the score of 2-1, improving to 16-7 on the year. In the bottom of the seventh inning chasing one run, the Pioneers were threatening with a man on second and one out. Eli Kieser (2023) went on to hit a ball sharply on the ground to third-base, but a heads up play from James Jenkins (2023) resulted in the lead runner getting nabbed on his attempt to go to third, eliminating the threat. Catcher Nolan Kulavic (2022) ended the game and sealed the win for the Senators when he gunned down the final out at second on an attempted steal. The story of the game was sophomore right-hander Seth Impson, who went the distance and tossed a complete game with no earned runs, five hits, five strikeouts and no walks. Impson impressed with his overall ability to control the zone, boasting an effective fastball/slider combination and keeping Pioneer hitters off-balance the entire game. His fastball worked comfortably in the 80-83 mph range, reaching back for 85 mph at one point. He paired his sharp slider off his fastball and was able to land it both for strikes and to put hitters away, throwing it often and in any count at 71-73 mph. Springfield got off to a quick start with the bats, adding two runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a single up the middle from the aforementioned Jenkins, making the score 2-0 at the time. Junior right-hander and Iowa commit Matt Sauser toed the rubber for U-High and was electric over his six inning stint, striking out a staggering 14 batters while only allowing two hits, three walks and two earned runs. The future Hawkeye ran his fastball up to 91 mph a number of times throughout the outing, sitting mostly 89-90 mph with arm-side life and sink. He showed an aptitude for spinning the breaking ball, ripping off a sharp 10/4 slider at 78-81 mph and a downer curveball at 76 mph with depth. He also flashed a changeup at 83 mph to showcase a fourth offering, fading to the arm-side at 83 mph. Notable Performances: Seth Impson (Springfield): 7IP, 0ER, 5H, 5K, 0BB Matt Sauser (Normal University): 6IP, 2ER, 2H, 14K, 3BB Grant Marshall (Normal University): 2-for-3 James Jenkins (Springfield): 1-for-2, 2RBI Ryne Crum (Springfield): 1-for-3, 2B, R | ||||
