Area Scout, Tech Analyst In a tie game heading to the bottom of the seventh inning, Illinois-Chicago commit Lucas Smith came to bat to lead off the inning. On a 1-1 count, Smith delivered a walk-off homerun to deep center field to complete the comeback. Nazareth Academy scored four unanswered runs to win 4-3 over No. 9 Yorkville. In a 3-2 deficit heading to the bottom of fifth, Louisville commit Nick Drtina, who got the start on the mound, tied the game up at 3-3. Smith reached on an error to get the inning started. After the following two batters got out, Drtina shot the baseball back up the middle to tie the game. Down 3-0 early after 1 1/2 innings of play, Nazareth got themselves on the board to cut into the lead. Sophomores David Cox led off the second inning with a walk and Luca Fiore followed suit with a one out walk of his own. Sophomore Cole Reifsteck drove in Nazareth’s first run with a two out bunt single to bring home Cox and make it 3-1 after two innings. In the following inning, Nazareth added another run to bring himself within one run. Smith led the inning out with a sharply hit single to right field. Two batters later, senior Luke Brabham, Morton JC commit, lined a double to the opposite gap scoring Smith from second base. No. 9 Yorkville jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Lead off hitter Everett Ford went first pitch swinging for a single to the right fielder. Kameron Yearsley reached on an error the next at-bat, allowing Ford to move to third and Yearsley to second. Sophomore Nate Harris with two outs, drove in both runners with a sharply hit single to center field. 6 | Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South squared off for some cross-town play and saw the Trojans come away with the 9-7 victory. The Mustangs headed into the bottom of the seventh inning chasing three runs and needing a rally. Uncommitted junior Anthony Titone stepped in and roped a ball over the left-field wall to lead off the inning, bringing the score to 9-7. Back-to-back singles from Ben Dziedzic and Jalen House put men on first and second with one out. With the Mustangs threatening, Will Potter stepped in and sent a screaming line-drive to left field; the ball would end up being caught by Colin Nuttal, who then sent a strike to second base which doubled off the runner and ended the contest. The Trojans were able to get out to an early lead in the top of the second inning; South Carolina commit George Wolkow would step in and deliver a two RBI double to the right-center gap, extending the lead to 3-0. West Virginia commit Tony Konopiots would later step in and lift a ball over the left-field wall for a home run, plating three and pushing the lead to 6-0 at the time. The Trojans would add two more runs in the fourth thanks to a wild pitch and an RBI single from the aforementioned Nuttal, scoring Konopiots who walked earlier in the frame. Tommy Finley would add one more run to the Trojan's tally, recording an RBI single in the top of the seventh to push the score to 9-6 at the time. From the third inning and on, the Mustangs scored at least one run in every single frame, highlighted by a solo home run from Ben Dziedzic in the bottom of the fourth, making it 8-3 at the time. Joe Chiarelli got the start for North and went three strong innings; allowing just one earned run, four hits, four strikeouts and two walks. The right-hander ran his fastball up to 82 mph, sitting mostly 80-81 mph; also going to a sharp 11/5 breaking ball often with a knack to spin it, 70-71 mph. 14 | No. 5 Lockport won a thriller on Friday, beating Glenbrook South by a score of 12-10. Iowa Central CC commit CJ Byrdak struggled on the mound for the Porters, allowing eight runs (5 earned) off 11 hits, while striking out three through 4.2 innings of work. Lockport entered the fifth inning trailing 5-2. The Porters, however, would rally on a Niko Mastoras RBI single and a Joey Manzo RBI walk to tie the game at five in the top half of the fifth. Glenbrook would answer with three of their own to take an 8-5 lead heading into the sixth. The Porters would respond, exploding for six runs of their own to take an 11-8 lead and ultimately put the game out of reach, winning 12-10 in seven innings.
