Entering the top of the sixth inning chasing three runs, Maine South was able to push across two runners to bring the score within one, but ultimately came up just short as the game was called for darkness after the conclusion of the half inning. Noah Collins (Maine South, 2023) started off the frame by reaching base via an error - followed by three consecutive walks and a hit-by-pitch, bringing the score to 4-3. RHP Jackson Natanek (Brother Rice, 2025) was able to retire the following three batters, two via the strikeout, to secure the win for the Crusaders and strand three Hawks runners on base. The Crusaders grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning and never looked back, with Jackson Natanek grounding into a fielder's choice to bring home Derrick Holmes (2025), who walked earlier in the frame - evening the score at 1-1. Purdue commit Amir Gray (2023) would come up a few batters later and drive a ball to the left-center gap, plating another run and giving the Crusaders a 2-1 lead. The scoring wasn't finished though, as the Crusaders would plate one more run on a fielder's choice to extend their lead to 3-1 at the time. Brother Rice would add on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth which would prove to be the difference maker, with a sac fly from Aidan Nohava (2023) bringing in Gray who reached base via an error, making the score 4-1 at the time. The Hawks of Maine South drew first blood in the matchup, with Collins singling up the middle to plate Brady Marques (2023) who was hit by a pitch to start the inning, making the score 1-0 after the top of the first. The Crusaders were led on the mound by Purdue commit RHP Cole Van Assen (2023). The lean right-hander struggled with command early on, but settled in nicely throughout the rest of his start - going four innings with three hits, one earned run, seven strikeouts and two walks. He cruised with his fastball at 89 mph early on, pairing it with a 76-78 mph curveball with depth and an 80-81 mph changeup that he felt comfortable throwing in any count. Freshman Sam Higgins supplied quality relief out of the 'pen for the Hawks, tossing two scoreless and hitless frames.
