If the veteran passes away, this exemption transfers to their surviving spouses if they are at least 60 years old.

AFHC administers the program and loans are generally processed rapidly, require little or no down payment, and often include lower interest. Veterans must use the program within 25 years of their discharge from active duty. Through the Veterans Interest Rate Preference, veterans may receive a 1% lower interest rate on the first $50,000 of a bank loan when purchasing a new home. The banks handling the financing implement the program; AHFC grants a preference to veterans for the rent or sale of a portion of it's low cost housing units.

The Maryland Veterans Trust program is permanently funded through slot revenue received from Veteran Service Organizations under the Maryland State Lottery; the program is managed by one Grant Administrator. The MDVA Secretary is the Chair of the Board of Trustees, which meets every 4–6 weeks to review applications for assistance––mostly with with rent/mortgage and utilities (the trust does not assist with taxes, finding housing, child support, speeding tickets, legal fees, payday and interpersonal loans, credit card debt, home repairs, food, appliances, or vehicle purchases). Eligible veterans are at less than 200% of the federal poverty guidelines ($23,760 for a single veteran; VA/SSA benefits count as income).
