3 | -400 | Book | The first record of a circular city: the book "Atlantis" by Plato | Plato acquired the story, "Atlantis", through his ancestor, Solon. Solon was a famous Greek lawmaker who had visited Egypt circa 600 BC where he was told the story of Atlantis by the priests of the temple of Neith (note that this temple no longer exists, except for a few tumbled stones). The book, "Atlantis", is the first known record of a circular city. In the book, Plato describes the city of Atlantis as generally circular, Plato writes, "[the city]...making alternate zones of sea and land larger and smaller, encircling one another; there were two of land and three of water, which he turned as with a lathe, each having its circumference equidistant every way from the centre, so that no man could get to the island, for ships and voyages were not as yet..." The pamphlet advocated and described, proposed, a beautifully architected network of moneyless cities. Gillette wrote, "I here reiterate what I have said before, that no system can ever be a perfect system, and free from incentive for crime, until money and all representative value of material is swept from the face of the earth." He goes on to say, money will ... "pass into the oblivion of an ignorant age". http://urbanplanning.library.cornell.edu/DOCS/gillette.htm
9 | 1898 | Book | Book: Garden Cities of To-morrow | By Ebenezer Howard. The original title was, "To-morrow: A Peaceful Path to Real Reform". 17 | 1932 | Founding | Founding of Technocracy Inc. | Howard Scott and Marion King Hubbert founded Technocracy Incorporated, and proposed that money be replaced by energy certificates. The group argued that apolitical, rational engineers should be vested with authority to guide an economy into a thermodynamically balanced load of production and consumption, thereby doing away with unemployment and debt. "Technocracy is the science of social engineering, the scientific operation of the entire social mechanism to produce and distribute goods and services to the entire population..." Technocracy Inc. advocated for a no-growth, fully automated economy without politics - a system entirely run by scientists and engineers. Technocracy claimed the economy would develop to the point of full automation, and then steady-state. The idea had many advocates at the time, but was never sufficiently designed and documented. Note that the system described by The Auravana Project is not Technocracy and is not technocratic, although it does have some similarities and could be considered a predecessor. | https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/03/Silver_red_monad.png

28 | 1962 | Event or Issue | OGAS (Russian: Общегосударственная автоматизированная система учёта и обработки информации, All-State Automated System) | A Soviet project to create a nationwide economic information network. The project began in 1962. It was one of a series of attempts to create a nationwide network, analogous to what became the Internet, all of which failed. A previous proposal for a national computer network to improve central planning, Anatolii Kitov (ru)'s Economic Automated Management System, had been rejected in 1959 because of concerns in the military that they would be required to share information with civilian planners. Glushkov proposed OGAS in 1962 as a three-tier network with a computer centre in Moscow, up to 200 midlevel centres in other major cities, and up to 20,000 local terminals in economically significant locations, communicating in real time using the existing telephone infrastructure. The structure would also permit any terminal to communicate with any other. Glushkov further proposed using the system to move the Soviet Union towards a moneyless economy, using the system for electronic payments. The project failed because Glushkov's request for funding on 1 October 1970 was turned down. The 24th Communist Party Congress in 1971 was to have authorised implementation of the plan, but ultimately endorsed only expansion of local information management systems. Glushkov subsequently pursued another network plan, EGSVT, which was also underfunded and not carried out. Soviet network plans failed while the American ARPANET succeeded. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OGAS | https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/0b/OGAS.jpg/300px-OGAS.jpg

30 | 1964 | Published Vision | Published vision: Gruen’s “cellular city” | Gruen’s 1964 design of the “cellular city.” He described these cities as organisms or galaxies. Each town is like a cell, with a town center acting as a nucleus. These cluster together to form cities, which he likened to organs. Then the super organism is the “metropolis of tomorrow”: a collection of cities grouped around a metropolis core. http://www.museumofthecity.org/project/the-gruen-effect/ | http://www.museumofthecity.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/urban-planning-4.png
31 | 1964 | Book | Book: The Heart of Our Cities | Urban crisis, a diagnosis and cure by Vitor Gruen. Gruen believed that there was an underlying cellular nature to a properly built community. If the basic unit of life is a cell, and millions of cells can come together to create an organism, he reasoned that an urban structure based on cells (clusters of mixed-use development) would be the healthiest system. The benefit of a cellular urban organization is that it can be scaled as small as a home or as large as the size of a metropolis. | https://sites.google.com/site/theoriginalepcot/_/rsrc/1472855805641/epcot-and-the-heart-of-our-cities/windows_sm.jpg

Spilhaus’ vision for this noiseless, fumeless, self-sustaining city included underground infrastructure for transporting and recycling waste; a mass transit system that would slide cars onto tracks, negating the need for a driver; and computer terminals in every home that would connect people to his vision of the Internet. http://zachmortice.com/2017/10/20/experimental-city-sci-fi-utopia-never/

39 | 1971 | Event or Issue | Project Cybersyn (1971-1973) | Cybersyn research project was a Chilean project from 1971–1973 during the presidency of Salvador Allende aimed at constructing a distributed decision support system to aid in the management of the national economy. The project never made it past the prototype stage, and was developed by the Chilean socialist government at the time and Stafford Beer. Project Cybersyn was based on viable system model theory and a neural network approach to organizational design, and featured innovative technology for its time: it included a network of telex machines (Cybernet) in state-run enterprises that would transmit and receive information with the government in Santiago. Cybersyn stood for cybernetic synergy; the name "cyber" was used in reference to the underlying science, and "synergy" in reference to the whole was seen as more than the sum of its parts. The design necessitated factories that would be run by the State. Factories would be tasked with production, if factories missed a production schedule, then an alert would be sent to the State to intervene from above to help fix the problem) problem. This system was assumed to enable top down intervention while preserving individual liberty. The designers also developed a plan for worker participation. The workers were to be included in the design of the models for the factories that informed the statistical software. For example, the workers could identify which indices of production are important and what range of values are acceptable. The project consisted of four modules: an economic simulator, custom software to check factory performance, an operations room, and a national network of telex machines that were linked to one mainframe computer. The following four components were given the name Cybersyn: 1) Computer network - A network of telex machines that transmit data about the factories where they are located to a central control room where a computer is located to process the data. 2) Statistical processing by software (named, Cyberstirde) - a customized suite of software that would run on the main computer. It would take the data from the factories as input and it would run statistical processing to figure out what that data meant. The results were intended as input for human economic decision makers. The software would allow for dynamic reactions by decision makers. 3) Economic simulator - an indirect mapping of the economy that would allow economic decision makers to test our different economic scenarios. 4) A control room for government and labor leaders to observe data projected on the walls and make decisions. Informed by data. | https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/70/Cybersyn_control_room.jpg/350px-Cybersyn_control_room.jpg
