| sl | The Financial Times profiled Apple's Vision Lab for developing AI in Zurich, Switzerland. Apple has acquired around two dozen startups in the past 10 years in areas like AI reasoning, image and video recognition, data processing, search and music content curation. Former Apple AI employee and Carnegie Mellon scientist Ruslan Salakhutdinov says chip power and concerns over inaccuracies have slowed Apple's introduction of AI features. We all expect to find out how far along they are in solving that at WWDC June 10. | https://arstechnica.com/ai/2024/04/apple-poaches-ai-experts-from-google-creates-secretive-european-ai-lab/
| tm | News publishers are either paying AI companies or suing them for not paying them. Eight US newspaper owned by Alden Global Capital are suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement. The complaint is for using their content to train models, removing identifying info like journalists names and titles and trademark infringement for using publication names. They also claim incorrect ansewrs attributed to them damaged their reputations. Meanwhile The Information's sources say Google has reached a $5-6 million deal with News Corp to develop new AI related products. News Corp says this is not a content licensing deal though. | https://www.axios.com/2024/04/30/microsoft-openai-lawsuit-copyright-newspapers-alden-global

| sl | Beats announced new over-ear headphones, the Solo 4, that do not have noise cancelation but support wired audio over USB-C and minijack, can play when plugged in even if the battery is dead and support iOS and Android. They come out in June for $199.99. Beats also annocuned the Solo Buds, its first sub-$100 pair of wireless ear buds. They have noise isolation but not active noise cancellation. And the case doesn't have a battery to recharge, so the buds have to be in the case and the case plugged in to charge. But you only have to pay $80, available now. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/30/24145198/beats-solo-4-headphones-buds
| tm | The Arc browser is the one with a collapsable sidebar and vertical tabs. It's only been available for iOS and MacOS, until now. If you want to try the Browser Company's new take on the browser, Arc is now available for Windows. Arc for Windows is the result of the Browser Company's work to bring Apple's Swift programming language to Windows as well. The Browser Company open-sourced the infrastructure it used to build Windows apps in Swift. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/30/24144183/arc-browser-windows-launch-features-availability
| sl | French satellite company SES is purchasing Intelsat for $3.1 billion, in an effort to offer more options than those provided by Starlink and Amazon's Project Kuiper. The companies said in a statement that the partnership would have a fleet of more than 100 geostationary Earth orbit and 26 medium Earth orbit satellites. By comparison, Starlink has around 5,800 satellites in orbit. Intelsat was looking at bankruptcy as early as 2022. SES' CEO Adel Al-Saleh stated that the acquisition was easier to clear from the regulatory point of view than a merger, but that Intelsat's emergence from bankruptcy was also a factor.

| tm | The US may not be the last to ban TikTok. At an election debate in Germany, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said "We know exactly the danger of TikTok" pointed out that the European Commission was the first to ban TikTok from government phones and implied that TikTok could possibly face a similar situation in Europe to that it's facing in the US. | https://www.politico.eu/article/tiktok-ban-in-eu-is-not-excluded-von-der-leyen-says/
| sl | TikTok may not be the last. The law that named TikTok also gave the president the power to identify other apps owned by a company controlled by a foreign adversary and ban them as well. Congressional Aides tell the Washington Post that Bytedance's Capcut editing software could be next on the chopping block. | https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/04/29/tiktok-capcut-ban-impact/
| tm | And in another piece of evidence as to why Bytedance would rather not pull TikTok from the US, It has more than doubled the number of sellers in the US on TikTok Shop to 500,000. Though that's a small percentage of the 15 million sellers worldwide. | https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-04-30/tiktok-shop-tops-500-000-us-sellers-after-2023-e-commerce-launch

| sl | Instagram is making changes to its algorithm to recommend more smaller creators. It will also replace reposts with original content in recommendations, add labels to reposted content, and remove content aggregators from recommendations. Creators have repeatedly said the algorithm works against them. In response, Instagram has a new way to rank recommendations that will show eligible content to a small audience. If and when people engage with the content, the top performing set of Reels will be shown to more people. then the most popular of those will be shown to an even wider group, etc. Instagram says this change will give all creators an equal chance of finding audiences. | https://techcrunch.com/2024/04/30/instagram-is-updating-its-ranking-systems-to-surface-more-content-from-smaller-original-creators/
| NOTES: - Instagram finds two or more identical pieces of content on Instagram, it will only recommend the original one. It won't replace content if it has been significantly changed- meme, parody etc - Instagram is also going to start adding labels to reposted content that will link users to the original creator

| tm | Pittsburgh's Aurora Innovation plans to start operating 20 driverless freight trucks on Interstate 45 between Dallas and Houston later this year. Clients included FedEx, Uber Freight, Werner and more. They think they can have thousands of these trucks on US roads within the next few years. The trucks save on fuel because they keep speeds consistent, and can operate without rest. That means they can speed up deliveries and bring down the price. Sarah, would you feel safe with thousands of these things on the roads? | https://apnews.com/article/trucks-selfdriving-highways-automation-driver-083409631158f54d806d75309c4764e2
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| NOTES - The companies argue the trucks are safer because they don't tired or get distracted. But errors will happen and the way the systems deal with those errors will be the true test of safety. - In 1 million miles of safety testing, Aurora Trucks had three accidents, all caused by human drivers either changing lanes unexpectedly or rear-ending the trucks. - Aurora aims to be profitable by late 2027 or early 2028. - Plus.ai, Gatik, Kodiak Robotics all plan to put autonomous freight trucks on the road in the next couple of years. - Trucking has a shortage of about 64,000 drivers, so there is demand for this. - Teamsters is pushing states to require human safety drivers.

I used to roadie for a local Christian rock band, and I remember stuff like the venue promising there was a great monitor setup, only to arrive and find all they had was a single small monitor wedge by the vocalist mic.
