21 | sl | Is Google shutting down a service even news anymore? Well just in case it is, Google says it will remove its VPN service from the Google One paid subscription plans because "people simply weren’t using it.” The idea is to let the support team focus more of their time on in-demand features. Google didn't give an exact date, just said it would go away in the next few months. The VPN introduced for Pixel users on the Pixel 7 will continue. For now. | https://9to5google.com/2024/04/11/google-one-vpn-discontinued/
22 | tm | China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is directing Chinese telecoms to remove foreign processors from their network equipment by 2027. Locally-made chip quality from Huawei, HiSilicon, Hygon IT and the National University of Defense Technology has improved enough that telecoms have begun to switch over for other reasons in many cases. China accounted for 27% of Intel's revenue last year and 15% of AMD's. While it will still be able to sell chips to Chinese companies for other uses, it will certainly have an impact. And China is attempting to restrict the use of foreign-made chips in other cases as well. | https://www.wsj.com/tech/china-telecom-intel-amd-chips-99ae99a9?st=q5ack5tc7oxlrwa
23 | sl | The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is investigating a breach at Sisense, which among other things makes a dashboard to monitor availability of third-party online services. CISA and Sisense recommend customers reset credentials shared between monitored services and Sisense products. Krebs On Security's sources say the attackers gained access to an Amazon S3 token through a Gitlab code repository. It used that S3 server to access millions of tokens, email account passwords, and SSL certificates. That would let the attackers appear to be valid logged in users of any third-party service attached to Sisense dashboards. Sisense has more than 1,000 customers across financial, education, healthcare and telecommunications. | https://krebsonsecurity.com/2024/04/why-cisa-is-warning-cisos-about-a-breach-at-sisense/
24 | tm | The Conversation has an article out showing that weather predictions have been getting better not worse, despite the fact that us humans generally focus not he failures rather than the successes. Improved accuracy is not 100% accuracy. According to The Met Office in the UK, a four-day forecast today is as accurate as one-day forecasts thirty years ago. And even more important than whether you should wear a raincoat, meteorologists can accurately forecast where a hurricane will hit three to four days in advance. Yes you can remember the time it was wrong, but now try to remember all the times it was right. You probably won't since that's not how our brains work, but there are a lot more of those than the mistakes. | https://theconversation.com/despite-what-you-might-hear-weather-prediction-is-getting-better-not-worse-225904

Showtime is now included in the Paramount+ tiers of subscriptions and can be accessed through the Paramount+ app. This is a similar approach to what Warner Brothers did when it merged HBO into its other services to create what is now called Max. | https://variety.com/2024/digital/news/showtime-streaming-apps-shutting-down-1235968145/

30 | sl | Meta is testing its large language model-powered chatbot Meta AI on WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger in India, Nigeria, and some other countries in Africa. India is Meta's single largest market, with more than 500 million users across Facebook and WhatsApp. It's the latest in the march of AI tools being released to the public around the world. | https://techcrunch.com/2024/04/11/whatsapp-trials-meta-ai-chatbot-in-india-more-markets/
31 | tm | And as we all get more access to more of these tools it's worth noting that how they work is changing. In the Know a Little More episode on ChatGPT, I described how LLMs work by basically predicting what the next word or next pixel should be based on what it has been trained on and what has come before in the sequence. Professor of AI at the University of Bath, Nello Cristianini has an article on The Conversation about how that may be about to change and make chatbots more capable. | https://theconversation.com/ai-chatbots-are-bad-at-planning-but-this-could-soon-change-227714
32 | tm | OpenAI's GPT-5 and Meta's Llama 3 models are expected to have the ability to plan ahead, not just predict the next thing. Google DeepMind famously developed an algorithm good at planning ahead called AlphaGo, that could beat world champions at the game Go. The idea is to incorporate the planning element of an AlphaGo into LLMs to replace the predictive or "autoregressive" element. This would mean a chatbot might understand that you have an end in mind and it can plan to help you reach that end. Current LLMs have no conception of what your goals are. If that plays out in Meta and OpenAI's next models you will see a big improvement in what they can do and likely a reduction in things like hallucinations. | https://deepmind.google/technologies/alphago/

38 | sl | OpenTable said in an email to members Friday that starting May 22nd, all reviews on the platform will now show members' profile pictures and first names, even if the past review was originally anonymous. OpenTable says the change was made to provide more transparency in its review system. OpenTable says diners have contributed over 136 million reviews on the platform, sharing their dining experience (good or bad) with other members, so it's a pretty big shift to go from anonymous to something that could pinpoint you in a location based on the date of review, or your name, or both. Since we've all lived in SF at one point I'm going to guess we've all used OpenTable. Some folks are very unhappy about this retroactive play. 52 | sl | While the US economy has been growing and job growth remains strong, the tech and media sectors have been suffering round after round of layoffs. Just in April, Checkr, a technology that offers employee background checks, laid off 382 employees. Ghost Autonomy, a startup focused on developing software for self-driving cars, closed its doors April 3rd leading to more than a 100 layoffs in Mountain View, Dallas, Detriot and Sydney. And on the bigger company side, Intel, is planning layoffs begining around May 25th. 67 | We finish up the week of people sharing their EV experiences and thoughts with both Andy and Allison Sheridan pointing out that while it does take longer to charge up an EV than fill up a gas car, you fill up less often if you charge overnight at home. In those cases you almost never go to a charging station unless you're going on a longer trip. As Andy put it "I've had a Ford (not really a mustang) Mach E for about two years. It is amazing for my commute and I save a decent amount of money and time not having to stop at gas stations anymore. I set my max charging for 80% and start with a "full" tank every morning." Allison even did the math and posted the results up on Podfeet.com https://www.podfeet.com/blog/2022/06/ev-charge-time-vs-ice-gas-time/ Andy does agree that long trips feel harder for him with the EV, out as he put it "The downsides - The 1000 mile trip to Wisconsin is not pleasant. If I was driving over multiple days, it would be great and no different than our regional trips here. However, my practice is driving straight through and what was a 14-17 hour trip in an ICE car is a 20-23 hour trip in the EV (with the extended battery). " Thanks to everyone for sharing their EV expereinces with us and helping each other understand EVs better!! | https://www.podfeet.com/blog/2022/06/ev-charge-time-vs-ice-gas-time/

69 | Eva in Ireland weighed in on AI and jobs - "if you are an exceptional, high performing, creative employee you don't have to worry about AI taking your job. I'd like to suggest that most of us won't be in that top 10% cream of the crop of high fliers in any job. I think there's some kind of idea that we can all be exceptional but there's no way for everyone or even for the majority to be well above average. The average employee will be exactly that, average, and that's ok. Average presents the most common human demographic. It's these people as well as the older generation who find tech challenging, and entry level young people who will most likely be pushed out of the job market by AI. I'm not an expert in AI by a long shot but let's not pretend we are all exceptional and it will be just fine because Corporations have no history of making 1 person do the work of 3. Once AI becomes ubiquitous jobs will fall off because people will not get work life balance promoting jobs they will still be running chasing their tails even using AI because that's the way corporations make the money for their investors.
