Since last April, 12 characters has been the default setting for new customers and anyone resetting their master password. Now all users must have a master pass of 12-characters to be in compliance. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/1/3/24024012/lastpass-master-password-12-character-minimum-requirement-data-breach

All new XPS models will receive the minimalist design of the XPS 13 Plus, like a seamless glass touchpad, edge-to-edge keyboard, and glowing function and media keys, but won’t feel as sharp to the touch as the XPS 13 Plus. The Plus branding is also going away, so the new lineup now includes the XPS 13 starting at $1299, the XPS 14 starting at $1699, and the XPS 16 starting at $1899. | https://www.cnn.com/cnn-underscored/electronics/dell-xps-2024-lineup-hands-on

T-Mobile calls this “Hulu On Us” and along with similar offerings for Netflix and Apple TV+, it adds up to $35 per month in savings if a customer would otherwise pay for all 3. Go5G Next starts at $100 per month and goes up to $225 per month for a 4-line bundle. | https://variety.com/2024/digital/news/t-mobile-hulu-free-streaming-1235860468/
22 | rd | Thursday, The Biden Administration pledged $162 million in federal grants to Arizona-based semiconductor manufacturer Microchip Technology, which supplies chips to the automotive, defense, and other industries. This is the second award under the CHIPS Act, which aims to keep a steady chip supply for American companies that rely on semiconductors. With the investment, Microchip plans to increase its production output and is expected to create more than 700 jobs in construction and manufacturing. | https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/04/business/economy/microchip-technology-biden-funding.html?unlocked_article_code=1.LE0.N2eY.rUTVEk6t_g1S&smid=url-share

It supports 4.3K resolution at 90fps per eye, 12 concurrent cameras to for passthrough video, and improved body and face tracking. Qualcomm claims a 15% increase in GPU and 20% increase in CPU frequencies to handle "spatial computing in 4K.” Qualcomm says it's already working with HTC and at least 4 other hardware makers to use the chipset. 27 | rd | Almost 30 years after Microsoft introduced the dedicated "Windows" key to its keyboards, it's adding another dedicated key - The Copilot key. This will replace the menu key, and be over by the right-hand Alt key on most keyboards, and will start shipping on various new PCs, laptops, and Surface devices starting later this month. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/1/4/24023809/microsoft-copilot-key-keyboard-windows-laptops-pcs
28 | sl | As the name suggests, the Copilot key is a quick way to launch Microsoft’s AI-powered Windows Copilot experience that's built into Windows 11. For countries where Copilot isn't available, the new key will launch Windows Search. Microsoft added a dedicated Office key in the same spot back in 2019. For now, the Copilot key is just a launch key, it doesn't work in tandem with other keys to perform various tasks. No word on the OEMs that will use the new Copilot key yet, but that's expected at CES next week.

36 | rd | Google has been saying that it would eventually block third-party cookies in Chrome as a way to track user intent and behavior for some time, but, today is the day it has that it has actually started testing its cookieless technology on 1% of Chrome users globally. About 30 million people will be randomly asked if they want to “browse with more privacy”. If users say yes, third-party tracking cookies will blocked. | https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-67882315
37 | sl | Google will temporarily turn cookies back on for sites that are having issues, but, according to Anthony Katsur, chief executive of the IAB Tech Lab, an ad-tech industry trade group, the $600 billion-a-year online ad industry, which centers on the use of cookies, is “nowhere near ready”. | https://www.wsj.com/tech/google-is-finally-killing-cookies-advertisers-still-arent-ready-7582fcac?mod=rss_Technology

49 | sl | The Information's sources say OpenAI is now offering content licensing deals to publishers, between $1 million and $5 million annually, to "rightfully" use publisher content to train its models. OpenAI has existing licensing deals with both AxelSpringer which includes content from Politico and Business Insider, and the Associated Press. The report also says Apple is also negotiating similar rights, and offering more money, but also wants to be able to use the content more widely in future products, not just current ones. 51 | rd | On December 27th, the New York Times filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming the company infringed copyright by using New York Times content to train their large language models. The lawsuit seeks to hold OpenAI responsible for "billions of dollars in statutory and actual damages.” The NYT claims "www.nytimes.com" was the most common proprietary source used for content to train GPT-3's 66 million records. It alleges OpenAI models can “generate output that recites Times content verbatim, closely summarizes it, and mimics its expressive style.” Justin, fair use is going to come up here, but whether training a model is transformative enough, and whether the Times suffers as a result of the use is unchartered territory. 53 | FAIR USE NOTES: - Copyright in the US presumes that any use of a work is infringing and requires permission of the creator or rights holder unless the defendant can prove fair use. A judge will consider: 1. How transformative was the use 2. what is the nature of the work 3. how much was used 4. effect on the use as potential market for the original | https://fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/fair-use/four-factors/

65 | Bruce wanted to add what he thinks might also be contributing to the slowing EV market we talked about on Tuesday's show- " Another confounding factor I've encountered is misbehaving dealers, at least anecdotally. My partner had a great experience with her used 2019 Chevy Bolt. When misadventure befell it, she decided to buy a new one to take advantage of the $7,500 EV incentive tax rebate. She contacted eight or ten dealers both in the Seattle metro area and other regions, including in Oregon, California, and Idaho. In every case, no matter the advertised price of the vehicle, the drive-away price always included an extra $7,500 in dealer fees. Strangely, the exact amount of the tax rebate. Obviously, the incentive for purchasing a new EV was negated, and without it, the purchase of a new EV didn't make financial sense. Predatory pricing of nearby dealers kept her from purchasing the new Chevy Bolt that she wanted. fwiw, she ended up getting a used KIA Niro EV, which she's very happy with, despite no applicable tax credit. I guess the real moral of this story is that people interested in EVs should check out the used market; lots of great stuff out there for a much lower price than new!"

In a letter sent to hundreds of 23andMe users who are currently suing the company, 23andMe said that “users negligently recycled and failed to update their passwords following these past security incidents, which are unrelated to 23andMe.” “Therefore, the incident was not a result of 23andMe’s alleged failure to maintain reasonable security measures.” | https://techcrunch.com/2024/01/03/23andme-tells-victims-its-their-fault-that-their-data-was-breached/
