| sl | The Verge's sources say Microsoft is testing a new AI-powered chatbot that can automate Xbox support tasks such as responding to questions and issuing game refunds. The Xbox AI chatbot is currently connected to Microsoft’s support documents for the Xbox network and ecosystem, but in recent days Microsoft expanded the testing pool for its Xbox chatbot more broadly, suggesting that this prototype currently known as “Xbox Support Virtual Agent” may start to handle support queries for all Xbox customers. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/2/24118728/microsoft-xbox-ai-chatbot-testing
| tm | Starting now in select markets, and slowly rolling out to thew whole world, you can use OpenAI's ChatGPT without needing an account. You'll get the same model that non-paying logged in users get. Paying users get more advanced models. And you won't be able to save or share chats or use custom instructions. It will also have more restrictions on what kinds of prompts it will respond to for safety and abuse reasons. And even if you're an anonymous user, you can choose not to let your prompts and responses be used in training ChatGPT's models. But you'll need to opt out every time you use it. | https://techcrunch.com/2024/04/01/chatgpt-no-longer-requires-an-account-but-theres-a-catch/
| sl | Amazon wants to attract startup customers to Amazon Web Services. As part of that effort, Amazon has expanded its free credits program to cover the costs of using major AI models including Anthropic, Meta, Mistral AI, and Cohere. Howard Wright, VP and global head of startups at AWS said of the move "This is another gift that we're making back to the startup ecosystem, in exchange for what we hope is startups continue to choose AWS as their first stop." | https://www.reuters.com/technology/amazon-offers-free-credits-startups-use-ai-models-including-anthropic-2024-04-02/ | Tplo
| tm | The drumbeat of Apple AI research publication continues. Apple scientists published a paper Friday about a system called ReALM, for Reference Resolution as Language Modeling. It is good at understanding context, inducing vague references to something on a screen as well as conversational context. ReALM works by converting visual elements into textual format and then fine-tuning the language model helped it outperform GPT-4 at this kind of task. In practice it could mean you can use pronouns and refer to things on screen. For example, you might see a picture of a baseball player and ask "who is he?" And the assistant would know you mean the image of the person. It could also be used to help drivers navigate infotainment systems or assist users with disabilities. | https://www.macrumors.com/2024/04/02/apple-reveals-new-ai-system/
| sl | Discord is adding some… ads. Starting this week, Discord will let video game makers advertise to their users with something called Sponsored Quests. Sponsored Quests offer PC gamers in-game rewards for getting friends to watch a stream of them playing through Discord. The goal is for video games to get exposure to more gamers, and Discord will target ads depending on users' age, geographic location data, and gameplay. Users can opt out of personalized promotions for Quests that are based on activity or data shared with the platform. | https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/04/discord-starts-down-the-dangerous-road-of-ads-this-week/

| :05 | SEGMENT A - BIG NEWS
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| tm | For decades, the conventional wisdom was that news was a loss leader for a newspaper, while advertising, and particularly, classified advertising, made the money. You needed the news to get people to pick up the paper, you needed the classifieds to pay the news writers. Another piece of conventional wisdom is that Craigslist, EBay, and later Facebook marketplace, destroyed the classified market and put newspapers in peril. It's one of the pressures causing them to pick fights with Google. But for the New York Times, games like Wordle and Connections have become the new classified. A chart included in a recent SEC report shows that users spend more time on games than they do on news, and far more than on cooking or sports. Time spent on gaming has slowly increased relative to news consumption since January 2020. The acquisition of Wordle in January 2022 is certainly significant to maintaining the momentum, but it seems like a pretty gradual climb. Unlike classifieds, it's not a given that other news outlets could mimic this method of getting users in the door. | https://kotaku.com/new-york-times-nyt-games-wordle-connections-app-1851379895

| sl | Yahoo and Artifact jointly announced Tuesday that Yahoo will buy Artifact, an AI-generated news aggregation and recommendation app which launched in 2023 by Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Artifact announced in January it would be winding down operations through the end of February after about a year after launch, though it kept its core news reading capability going until the acquisition announcement. Systrom and Krieger said that the biggest reason to shut down Artifact was in order to focus on “newer, bigger and better things that have the ability to reach many millions of people.” Systrom tells The Verge's David Pierce that he had around 10 conversations with other companies interested in Artifact's tech, after it announced it was shutting down. So, what does Artifact bring to Yahoo, and vice versa? Yahoo says 185 million people come to Yahoo News every month, which puts Artifact’s personalization and recommendation tech in front of a bigger set of people right away. Artifact will no longer exist as a standalone app, but it will categorize, curate, and personalize content within Yahoo News — and eventually on other Yahoo platforms, too. | https://techcrunch.com/2024/04/02/yahoo-acquiring-instagram-co-founders-ai-powered-news-artifact/
| --- | https://techcrunch.com/2024/01/12/instagram-co-founders-news-aggregation-startup-artifact-to-shut-down/
| NOTES: - Yahoo and Artifact both declined to say what the cost of the acquisition was, but said Yahoo is acquiring Artifact’s tech, not its team. Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom, Artifact’s co-founders, will be “special advisors” for Yahoo. Artifact’s remaining 5 employees won't join Yahoo either. - Yahoo bought another app that used AI to summarize news, Summly, over a decade ago. Similarly, it shut down that app and folded the tech behind Summly into other products. | https://artifact.news/

| tm | Scientists from Trinity college Dublin published a paper in the journal PLOS ONE found that some people perceive more images per second than others. They tested perception by adjusting the flickering of a light source, something called the "critical flicker fusion threshold." If it flickered faster than the number of images per second a person could perceive that person did not see it as flickering. Perception ranged from 35 to 60 times per second. They believe the level of "temporal resolution" as they call it, remains stable throughout one's life, though there is evidence that female study subjects may experience slight changes more often than male subjects. | https://www.salon.com/2024/04/02/some-people-may-see-more-images-per-second-than-others-study-finds/

| David Comment on *Car Chases* and Foam Darts. I feel like we got a little in the weeds on this topic. If your speeding and not yeielding to lawful authority (Lights & sirens of a police car) I beleive its beyond contestation your breaking the law & more than likely the police crusiser has video of you doing it. Why your speeding or not yielding I'd say are irrelevant, under almost all circustances. Love the Batman Darts solution, Go! Nerf! I think drones would be another super easy way to resolve this, at a fraction of what a police helicopter would cost. But I'm sure GPS Darts are super cheap too. Awesome Solution. Love the show, as an aside, any time you guys want to have a intervention or KickStarter to prompt/force Tom to learn how to touch type I'm on board! 83 | The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities will use a Boston Dynamics Aurora robot to keep wildlife, particularly birds, away from an airport runway. They may also try to make it look like a fox or coyote and see how it does at deterring bears and moose. Alternatives included spraying repellents like grape juice from drones, putting down chemicals or training and keeping a border collie. The collie collects data but is proven to be unwilling to share it as easily as Aurora. According to the Federal Aviation Administration database, 92 animal strikes were reported near airports in Alaska last year, Aurora was paid for by a federal grant. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/2/24118846/boston-dynamics-robot-dog-alaska-fairbanks-airport-wildlife
