20 | sl | Former OpenAI chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever, announced Wednesday that he's starting a new AI company "Safe Superintelligence" that will prioritize safety. In a post on X Sutskever said, "Our singular focus means no distraction by management overhead or product cycles, and our business model means safety, security, and progress are all insulated from short-term commercial pressures." Safe Superintelligence currently has offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv. Joining Sutskever are cofounders Daniel Levy, a former OpenAI researcher, and Daniel Gross, co-founder of Cue and a former AI lead at Apple. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/19/24181870/openai-former-chief-scientist-ilya-sutskever-ssi-safe-superintelligence

28 | :05 | SEGMENT A - BIG NEWS
29 | rd | Anthropic released its newest model called Claude 3.5 Sonnet, comparing it to OpenAI's GPT 4o. It's designed to better understand nuanced and complex instructions. Claude 3.5 Sonnet is kind of the middle child of Anthopic's offerings — Haiku is its smallest model, Sonnet is the middle/mainstream option, and Claude 3 Opus is its highest-end model. But Sonnet is touted as being twice as fast as Opus for what it does. 3.5 Sonnet can also interpret charts and graphs with more accuracy and transcribe text from distorted images. Its context window is the same 200,000 as version 3. | https://techcrunch.com/2024/06/20/anthropic-claims-its-latest-model-is-best-in-class/
30 | sl | Anthropic also released Artifacts, which lets you create documents and edit them within a workspace inside Claude so you can see what things look like, and make edits if you need to. Artifact generates this stuff to the side so you can make tweaks within the same window. So for example with a text document, you can make edits without having to copy anything out to a text editor. With code, you get the UI and can tweak code and see how it affects the way the program runs in realtime. Claude 3.5 Sonnet is available now for free on the web and iOS and on Anthropic's API, Bedrock, and Vertex platforms. Paid users get 5x higher rate limits. So, as our AI journey marches on, the models keep getting more capable but we're starting to see more incremental updates. As Tom said in his newsletter today, the Artifacts feature is a good example of how these companies want to get you to use them instead of the competition, while pushing the competition to come up with their own better features. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/20/24181961/anthropic-claude-35-sonnet-model-ai-launch

38 | rd | Google’s new “Find My Device” network has been available since April, but, we’re just starting to see reviews of the feature because third-party trackers that work with Find My Device are becoming readily available. Unfortunately for Google, the general consensus is that Find My Device is not that great at finding devices outside of Bluetooth range which kind of defeats the purpose of the network in the first place. The problem isn’t hardware or even software. The Find My Device network is completely capable of finding devices. The issue stems from permissions. Unlike Apple, which turns its Find My network all the way on by default when a user sets up iCloud, Google is a bit more security conscious, with Find My Device set to "with network in high-traffic areas only" which requires multiple Android devices to pass by to detect an item's location and only then shows you a center point triangulated from these location reports. Should Google take a page from Apple's playbook and fully enable the Find My Device network in Android by default? | https://www.androidcentral.com/accessories/googles-find-my-device-network-is-live-but-it-isnt-working-as-expected
39 | Notes: -- Android users can go to Security > Find My Device > Find your offline devices and change the option to with network in all areas. That can help find other people's items in lower traffic areas and only needs one other Android device to locate an item, similar to Apple's Find My. | https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/i-compared-apples-find-my-network-and-google-find-my-device-heres-the-clear-winner/

74 | Bede had thoughts on the Apple Satellite Messaging we talked about last week- "I do a lot of tramping (multi day backcountry hikes) down here in New Zealand. There is little to no phone service in most of the mountain ranges I frequent. I use a Garmin InReach handheld GPS, which costs $25NZD/mo (~$15USD) for the basic plan, and then pay for any usage on top of that. This allows me to provide my loved ones with a link to track my location online and send an SMS to any number worldwide, which I use to tell them when I've arrived at my destination and will turn off the device overnight. They can also send me messages directly from the tracking page. It also has SOS functionality that allows you to call search and rescue to your location, not to mention all the benefits of a standard GPS unit." Bede goes on to say SOS functionality was a big reason he bought an iPhone 15 Pro: "I tested the SOS feature (you can do this without actually sending an SOS alert). I was very disappointed to find out that not only do you have to manually point it at a satellite, I wasn't able to get a lock even in a wide open field. I suppose that I might have better luck at the top of a mountain, although I haven't tested this yet, but I have near 0 confidence in my iPhone's ability to call in a helicopter if I need it to." "The InReach is designed to work in any terrain and has a very long battery life, a huge antenna to satellite connectivity without pointing it directly at a satellite, and a better feature set for my use case. The iPhone isn't designed to be relied on in these scenarios and is more of a last resort."

105 | sl | The Lenovo 11.5-inch Tab Plus is basically a Bluetooth speaker in a tablet. It has 26 Watts of sound with four tweeters and four woofers. And it can connect to other sound sources to act exactly like a Bluetooth speaker. It is one of those tablets with a kickstand too, which seems essential for this functionality. It also has a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack and supports 24-bit 96kHz high-res audio with Dolby Atmos tuning. Because of all these speakers, it's a little thicker at 7.7 millimeters but still not thick if you ask me. It's available now starting at $289.99. | https://substack.com/redirect/ab1029ff-6f8b-48d4-b1ef-4cc2a4e78c06?j=eyJ1IjoiMThodSJ9.OJFfxkPimdf9UFTbv81re4vnOXfbXabR5O2ZNE-6g5c
