19 | sl | Twitch announced Tuesday it's raising subscription prices for its Tier 1 customers in the US from $4.99 to $5.99 on July 11. This is notably the first time the monthly price has been raised in the US. In a post on X, Twitch also said streamers will still earn the same 50-70% through Twitch’s revenue-sharing program, so they will in theory earn more per subscription. | https://www.engadget.com/twitch-is-raising-us-subscription-prices-for-the-first-time-193204538.html
20 | tm | Netflix announced it will stop support for its apps on second- and third-generation Apple TVs - which are more than 12 years old at this point. You have until July 31st to find a replacement. Apple stopped servicing the devices more than 5 years ago. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/4/24171111/netflix-stop-support-old-apple-tv-2nd-3rd-generation
21 | sl | Search Engine Land published analysis by SEO platform BrightEdge that shows that Google’s AI Overviews - those are the AI-generated answers that show up at the top of a Google Search and have made the news for being hallucinatory at times - have dropped from appearing in 84% of queries to 15%. The data shows AI Overviews are 195% more likely to appear when queries have a featured snippet, and question-based queries are also more likely to feature AI Overviews. They also show up most often in Healthcare (63%), although that's still down from 76% in January. AI Overviews now appear less than 1% of the time for Restaurants and Travel. | https://searchengineland.com/google-ai-overviews-visibility-drops-15-percent-queries-442850
22 | tm | Google announced it's acquiring software virtualization company Cameyo. Google and Cameyo started working together last year to offer virtualized legacy Windows desktop apps in ChromeOS. Camyeo mostly targets businesses who want to move to ChromeOS but have some Windows apps that would make a transition difficult. Camyeo can virtulize them in a way that makes them feel liek they're just running on ChromeOS. The acquisition will make it easier for them to increase the integration. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/5/24171900/google-cameyo-acquisition-chromeos-windows-app-virtualization
23 | sl | A new issue with Apple's Screen Time has come to light… this one includes features for parents to restrict access to various apps, website and content on their children’s devices. A bug in the app lets users get around web browsing content restrictions by typing a series of special characters into the Safari browser URL, and the Wall Street Journal's Joanna Stern reports this was previously reported to Apple by security researchers multiple times over the last three years. Apple said in a statement that it has made “substantial Screen Time fixes” in the latest iOS 17.5 release and will continue doing so. | https://www.wsj.com/tech/personal-tech/a-bug-allowed-kids-to-visit-x-rated-sites-apple-took-three-years-to-fix-it-17e5f65d?st=zeqmad1hadhixq0&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink

27 | sl | Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports Apple is officially going with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to iOS 18, rumored to be offered as an opt-in service.. We'll know more at WWDC next week. Apple will But the partnership between Apple and OpenAI is apparently temporary, because eventually Apple wants to bring AI technology in-house. Not surprising if you think about how Apple Silicon eventually replaced Intel. But Gurman says Apple also wants to use large language models to help power “a pair of robotic devices that it is secretly developing.” These could include a tablet-top robotic arm with a large, iPad-like display, a mobile robot that can follow users and handle chores around the house, and AirPods with cameras and AI features. Scott, we'll know about the actual announcements soon enough, but do you want an Apple robot assistant? | https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-06-05/why-is-apple-aapl-teaming-up-with-openai-both-companies-need-each-other

37 | tm | Bartender is an app for MacOS that gives you more customization control over the menu bar. You can add icons for almost anything you want, create custom menu reveals, hotkeys and more. MacUpdater is software that helps you keep all your Mac apps up to date. It also provides some vetting of apps so you can make good decisions about them. One thing it can do is give you a warning before installing an update it thinks might be questionable. On April 22, MacUpdater's developers noticed that the code signature for Bartender changed from Surtees Studios, which it had been for years, to App Sub 1 LLC. That signature also linked to a developer of some low popularity and apparently low quality mobile apps. The homepage for that developer seemed to be a generated SEO page. Then on May 15 the release was signed by Bartender App LLC which had never signed an app before. So MacUpdater pushed the notice that "The company and developer behind Bartender was replaced in a silent and dubious manner - updates to version 5.0.52 and newer are your own risk and responsibility." When folks on Reddit began to discuss this notice a user called "Ordinary_Delivery_79" said they represented the new owners and had acquired Bartender two months ago. The developer said they had posted it on their blog but realized they should have shared it in release notes as well. The only thing I found was a note related to the 5.0.52 update that said "The new update to 5.0.52 involved a one-time certificate change. This is valid & expected!" | https://9to5mac.com/2024/06/04/bartender-acquired-unknown-developer/

40 | NOTES - Some users believe the new owner appears to be Applause Group which buys apps from developers and then monetizes them. 49 | tm | In yesterday's Quick Hits, we noted Samsung's new 32-inch Odyssey OLED G8 gaming monitor uses an Al processor to upscale content. Samsung's Neo QLED 8K TV does it too. At Computex AMD's CEO Dr Lisa Su said in her keynote "game developers will want to use more AI—not everything has to be rendered." And Nvidia showed its G-Assist AI Chatbot optimizing game settings and helping out players in-game. Scott, we've talked about AI making NPCs more interesting or helping developers create more detailed worlds but the roles for Ai in gaming are continuing to expand.

55 | SCOTT NOTES | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
56 | - Easy to think it will just be art/world assets, story, and voice over, etc. - It's much deeper than that. - (will talk about some of the short cuts and what it means for final design) - (ie Terrain building, and prototyping phases. Big changes there.) - Let computers handle stuff the player never has to directly see. - "Fake" elements that don't matter. Like CG bullets in tv and movies...no one even knows they are doing it. - BIG IMPORTANT THING THOUGH: These need to be STANDARDS. Otherwise, you have a problem where some games would only work on one GPU, or display, or console, or whatever is doing the AI heavy lifting. That is a problem nobody needs right now in this business.

66 | Mike wrote in with some insight on how he consumes DTNS - "I watch the standard DTNS every weekday morning on YouTube. I come in to work and open YouTube on one of my monitors and I watch the previous day's episode. It's kind of like my morning newspaper. If the show has particularly interesting news or discussions, I'll go to the Patreon website, find the extended version, open that on YouTube and watch the pre or post show. I know many people like the audio podcast but I'm an old Tech TV fanboy so I like seeing you, Sarah, and Roger (and Patrick when you have him) on screen. I like the graphics that Roger puts up with each story also. You're my morning show for tech geeks. LOL I'm not sure if that's good or bad or helpful to you."

97 | sl | Sometimes being a creator on social media just doesn't seem… healthy? A Twitch streamer called DeadBlossomJesse spent three days in a spinning wooden crate in an attempt to grow his channel during a subathon – a marathon where each new subscription and donation to their channel adds more to the amount of time the streamer must be live for. The box was nearly big enough for him to stand in and had air holes cut into it, but all he had were two ice boxes, some clothes, and his streaming equipment. He did complete the three days in the crate, mostly watching videos or playing games. | https://metro.co.uk/2024/06/04/twitch-streamer-lives-a-spinning-box-three-days-20967143/
