You can download it in the Play store, turn it on in Google Assistant, and in iOS toggle a switcher at the top of the Google app. Gemini now supports nine languages used in the new territories. Gemini is also coming to Google Messages starting in English. And worldwide, Gemini is available in Google Messages in all Android devices with 6GB of RAM or more. Before today it was limited to Pixel and Samsung models. | https://9to5google.com/2024/06/17/gemini-google-messages-android/
20 | tm | The Information's sources say Apple has told suppliers it has stopped working on the Apple Vision Pro 2. Instead it's focusing on a less expensive version of the current Apple Vision Pro for release by the end of next year. Supposedly the price of this one would be closer to $1500. All the work now goes on making the device lighter and cheaper without sacrificing too much capability. | https://9to5mac.com/2024/06/18/apple-vision-cheaper-halts-work-pro-model-headset/
21 | sl | Fisker, the California-based electric car company, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is in discussions with stakeholders regarding “debtor-in-possession and the sale of its assets.” In other words, they're selling the company for parts. Back in February, Fisker highlighted worries about staying in business and later did not secure an investment from a larger automaker, which is alleged to have been Nissan, reported by Reuters. | https://thehill.com/policy/technology/4727117-ev-maker-fisker-files-for-bankruptcy/
22 | tm | Need a really thin keyboard for travel but every one you find is too big. Meet the Logitech Keys-To-Go 2. It's less than a centimeter thick at a third of an inch and weighs 7.8 ounces. The keys have 1.1 mm of travel and a full row of shortcut keys for things like play and pause, volume, brightness, etc. And easy-switch keys can toggle between up to three bluetooth connections so you can use it on multiple devices. It supports Windows, Android, macOS, iOS, iPadOS and even ChromeOS. Downsides are that it has no kickstand and uses disposable coin-cell batteries. But it gets 36 months of battery life so you won't need to change those often. All that for $80. | https://www.engadget.com/logitech-keys-to-go-2-review-a-super-slim-travel-companion-for-almost-any-gadget-070150717.html
23 | sl | Meta-owned Threads has launched an API for developers, allowing 3rd party apps to publish posts, fetch their own content, and deploy reply management tools that will let users hide/unhide or respond to specific replies. Developers can also tap into analytics such as number of views, likes, replies, reposts, and quotes at the media and account level. In a post on Threads, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the “API is now widely available, and coming to more of you soon.” Meta also released a reference open-source app on GitHub for developers to try out. | https://techcrunch.com/2024/06/18/threads-finally-launches-its-api-for-developers/

28 | sl | The Copilot+ PCs have launched. These are PCs that are certified by Microsoft to have enough Trillions of Operations per second… or TOPS (at least 40) in their Neural Processing Units to run the Copilot models at top performance and as many on device as possible. Right now they are all running Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite processors. Copilot+ PCs with Intel and AMD processors are expected later this year. | https://www.engadget.com/here-are-all-of-the-copilot-pcs-with-snapdragon-x-chips-that-were-released-today-104404765.html
29 | tm | They do not have Microsoft Recall, as Microsoft has decided to keep that feature in Insider Preview while it tests new security and privacy measures. However there are loads of other voice- and text-activated measures integrated into Windows 11 that only work not here machines. They include automated photo touchups, real-time translations and captions, image generation, graphics upscaling and the usual text summaries and such. Let's run through the highlights of what's available.
30 | sl | Acer's Swift 14 AI is a14.5-inch display that's 3 pounds, has 26 hour battery life and is available in July starting at $1100. The ASUS Vivobook S 15 can dim the screen when the camera detects you aren't there, and can also automatically lock and unlock the computer. It's $1300. Dell has several, including an XPS 13 Inspiron 14 and 14 Plus, and Latitude 5455 and 7455 for enterprise. Pricing and availability coming later this year, though we do know the XPS 13 will start at $1300. HP has the Omnibook X, a 14-inch starting at $1,150. And it has the new helix-shaped HP AI PC logo. There's also the HP EliteBook Ultra G1q, a business laptop that runs some of the videoconferencing things like background blur on the NPU, saving some CPU power. Available now for $1,700. Lenovo has the Yoga Slim 7x with a 14-inch screen, 2.82 pounds and thin bezels. Starts at $1300. A ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 is on the way soon too. Microsoft Surface Laptop - It's $1,000 and promises up to 22 hours on a charge. And the Microsoft Surface Pro with the new Flex keyboard works whether it's attached or not. It starts at $1,000. And the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge Series. The screen sizes range from 14-16 inches with 3K AMOLED screens and 120Hz refresh rates. Starts at $1350.
31 | tm | We're also seeing benchmarks trickle in for this devices and the Snapdragon X processors. It's NPU is the fastest not he market at 45 TOPS. But it's also the only one in this class on the market until AMD Strix Point and Intel Lunar Lake arrive and they are expected to be as fast or faster. The benchmarks out there generally show good performance and battery life. Sleep performance also seems much better at not draining the battery. Qualcomm's Adreno GPU is not delivering the graphics performance gamers might want. There are ARM emulation errors which isn't a big surprise But also some user report difficulty changing game resolution to match the screen, lower than expected frame rates and difficulty finding whether games are native or emulated. PC Gamer notes that a sponsored video review of the Asus Vivobook S 15 even notes that Fortnite wouldn't load and Diablo 4 ran for a minute before a catastrophic Prism crash. 33 | roger notes: - impressive battery life and performance. MS says one Surface Laptop can run up to 22hrs on a charge. Smartphone level of battery life. - all seem targeted at the thin and light, ultranotebook segment. Intel's Core Ultra line. - issues with games to be expected. Honestly don't think it will be resolved anytime soon. Will expect to see games with broader appeal to be written with Snapdragon in mind. Word of Warcraft. In a way similar to how mobile games overlaptop PC games. - Longer term wonder how long Microsoft thinks it can straddle the differences in instruction set architecture with the same OS.

38 | tm | Xreal makes augmented reality glasses that project an external display for your smartphone or other device in your field of view. It's more limited than a Quest or Apple Vision Pro but also more practical. And it includes a remote control called the Beam. Now Xreal has introduced the Beam Pro which is basically a smartphone modified to make the best use of the Xreal display. It has 6.5-inch touchscreen and runs Android 14 with Xreal's modified NebulaOS. You can use the touchscreen as an input drive when you're wearing the glasses. And it can run two apps side-by-side in your glasses view. It also has dual 50-megapixel cameras on the back for talking spatial and 3D video. That will work in the Xreal glasses and in the Apple Vision Pro. It also has two USB-C ports so you can connect the glasses while you charge. 51 | sl | The Wall Street Journal has a post today that social media influencers are having a time of it. The Journal spoke to Clint Brantley, who's been a full-time creator for three years, posting videos on TikTok, YouTube and Twitch, related to the game “Fortnite.” He has 400,000 followers, his posts average 100,000 views, but his income last year was less than the median annual pay for full-time U.S. workers in 2023—$58,084, based on Bureau of Labor Statistics data. The bigger story is that platforms aren't paying as much for popular posts, and brands are being more careful with their sponsorship deals. There's also the looming issues for creators, such as TikTok potentially pulling out of the US in 2025. | https://www.wsj.com/tech/social-media-influencers-arent-getting-richtheyre-barely-getting-by-71e0aad3?st=snqhy92nimb59t6&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink
52 | NOTES: - Around 50 million people earn money from being influencers, according to a 2023 report from Goldman Sachs, which expects the number to grow at an annual rate of 10% to 20% through 2028. The US Labor Department doesn’t track wages for these creators, also known as influencers. - In 2023, 48% of creator-earners made $15,000 or less, according to NeoReach, an influencer marketing agency. Only 13% made more than $100,000. - Creators [usually] don’t get paid time off, healthcare benefits, retirement contributions. - YouTube said it paid more than $70 billion to creators, artists and media companies in the past three years, and more than 25% of channels in the ad-revenue share model are now making money through it. - TikTok’s $1 billion creator fun ran from 2020 to 2023. YouTube Shorts had something similar. Instagram’s Reels Play bonus program rewarded creators with fluctuating payouts. Snapchat’s Spotlight rewards program gave $1 million a day to the platform’s top creators.

65 | Conor in Sardinia writes - "I think Microsoft pushing the recall feature wasn’t nefarious or misguided. Sometimes us “techies” forget that we are a small portion of the user base. Recall wasn’t made for us, it was made for everyone. I used the rewind app for a while, it was useful, but there’s a thing with these systems. Their magic comes when you need it and like a backup, you don't know when you will. Microsoft enabling by default, in my opinion was to present this “magic” to the users when they needed it and to avoid the situation where a friend or family needs to find something and the resident tech support asks why they didn’t enable recall. I find this at work, we implement new features, but users don’t use them until forced. They need to feed the recall database data, ready for users. I compare it to screen time in this sense. It’s useful not on day one, but after a few weeks, when you look back. If it was opt in it’s usefulness is diminished."

68 | Thank you for your as always measured discussion of hot-button topics. I work in an ED in a small city (~100,000), another ED in a very rural area (less than 85,000 over multiple counties), and an EMS service in a small, surburban town (15,000). I don't know if mental health among youth is actually worse than it was in the past (although there are some recent studies showing it likely is, particularly among young girls), but I do know that we are in a crisis. Our EDs are filling up with pre-teen, teen, and young adults in mental health emergencies. Many of these patients end up spending weeks on end in emergency departments, which is definitely not therapeutic, but is also dangerous for the patients and for staff. Until 2020 I worked in a large urban EMS system and we rarely ever had mental health patients boarding in the ED for longer than a day while waiting discharge or placement. There are many causes of this and it is undeniably not a black and white situation with easy solutions, however, I do think that a conversation, and guidelines from the government, about social media can help. I saw an (obvious) news story a few days ago that linked children's digital use to their parents' own digital use. I suspect this is similar with social media. I have no idea if this is a useful perspective, I have no solutions proposed, but I do think a measured, full conversation on any source of mental health angst is useful. (also realize that's a pipe dream in most settings) And I couldn't resist writing in since it affects my day to day work life so closely. - Andy

90 | tm | In 2025 Netflix will open two "Netflix Houses" in Dallas, Texas and King of Prussia Pennsylvania, outside Philly. If you've ever been to a Netflix pop-up for a show like Bridgerton or Stranger Things, imagine a permanent collection of those. Both Netflix Houses are setting up in former Department stores with more than 100,000 square feet of space. The idea is to fill that space with shopping, dining and "experiences" related to Netflix shows like “Bridgerton,” “Money Heist,” “Stranger Things,” “Squid Game” and more. Netflix is not expecting them to turn a profit, but doing them to keep fans engaged. Without specifics, Netflix tries to paint a picture of the kind of thing you'll encounter. “Imagine waltzing with your partner to an orchestral cover of a Taylor Swift song on a replica of the ‘Bridgerton’ set –– and then walking around the corner to compete in the Glass Bridge challenge from ‘Squid Game.'” Then presumably you go eat food named after Netflix stuff and buy merch. | https://variety.com/2024/digital/news/netflix-house-entertainment-dining-shopping-complexes-cities-2025-1236040989/
