19 | sl | We don't always cover outages on DTNS, but this was a pretty big one. A massive Microsoft outage affecting Bing.com, Copilot for web and mobile, Copilot in Windows, ChatGPT internet search and DuckDuckGo started around 3 AM Eastern Thursday, primarily affecting users in Asia and Europe. Reports said that opening Bing.com showed users a blank page or a 429 HTTP code error, but Bing search still worked directly. ChatGPT internet search and DuckDuckGo had problems too, because they use Bing's API. Microsoft confirmed users not being able to access the Microsoft Copilot service in a post on X. In a later update Microsoft added that it continues to isolate the root cause and "transitioning requests to alternate service components to expedite service recovery." | https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/microsoft-outage-affects-bing-copilot-duckduckgo-and-chatgpt-internet-search/
20 | rd | On the strength of an AI-driven sales surge, Nvidia shares passed $1000 per share for the first time. The chipmaker reported its first-quarter earnings which beat analyst expectations on Wednesday skyrocketing the stock in after-hours trading. Net income for the quarter ending April 28th was $14.88 billion, or $5.98 per share, compared with $2.04 billion, or 82 cents per share, in the same period a year ago. Revenue was $26.04 billion vs. $24.65 billion expected and earnings per share were $6.12 adjusted vs. $5.59 adjusted. | https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/22/nvidia-nvda-earnings-report-q1-2025-.html

In an announcement, the company said it plans to “fully support end-to-end encrypted messaging down the line.” Bluesky teased that it would be introducing DMs two weeks ago. Up until now, all conversations on the platform have been public, so the launch of DMs allows users to chat privately while still remaining on the social network. | https://techcrunch.com/2024/05/22/bluesky-now-has-dms/

23 | sl | OpenAI has reportedly struck a 5-year, $250 million deal with NewsCorp, which owns The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, The Sun, and more than a dozen other publishing brands. The deal will let ChatGPT display news from these publications and use the data to further train its AI models. Newscorp CEO Robert Thomson reportedly said in a memo to employees that, “The pact acknowledges that there is a premium for premium journalism.” | https://www.engadget.com/openai-will-reportedly-pay-250-million-to-put-news-corps-journalism-in-chatgpt-214615249.html?src=rss

27 | rd | 404 Media obtained a leaked Samsung contract that requires independent repair shops, in exchange for selling them repair parts, to give Samsung the name, contact information, phone identifier, and customer complaint details of everyone who gets their phone repaired at these shops. Oh… but it gets worse. Samsung also requires these shops, many if not most of whom are independent, to, and I quote, “immediately disassemble all products that are created or assembled out of, comprised of, or that contain any Service Parts not purchased from Samsung.” They are telling repair shops that if a customer brings a device in to get repaired for one thing, they must disassemble the device if it had previously been repaired with non Samsung parts. | https://www.404media.co/samsung-requires-independent-repair-shops-to-share-customer-data-snitch-on-people-who-use-aftermarket-parts-leaked-contract-shows/
28 | sl | John Bergmayer, legal director of the consumer rights group Public Knowledge says “Presumably, Samsung would try to defend the provision about ‘Service Parts not purchased from Samsung’ requiring a phone to be destroyed as a measure to fight counterfeits." The contract shows the incredible level of control that Samsung has over “independent” repair shops, which need to sign this agreement to get repair parts from Samsung. Signing this contract does not even make a repair shop an “authorized” repair center, which is a distinction that requires shop owners to jump through even more hoops.
29 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
30 | Notes: - independent repair shops must purchase Samsung parts - types of repairs are limited (no soldering) - repair shops must get certified by WISE, an arm of the CTIA, a trade group that repeately lobies against right to repair laws - this contract cannot be enforced in states with right to repair laws
31 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
32 | rd | TAG OUT iFixit and Samsung are ending their 2-year relationship after failing to renegotiate a new contract. iFixit CEO and co-founder Kyle Wiens told The Verge that “Samsung does not seem interested in enabling repair at scale.” He believes dropping Samsung shouldn’t actually affect iFixit customers all that much. Instead of being Samsung's partner on genuine parts and approved repair manuals, iFixit will simply go it alone, the same way it's always done with Apple's iPhones. | https://www.theverge.com/samsung/2024/5/23/24162135/ifixit-end-samsung-repair-parts-deal

49 | sl | What is an AI PC, anyway? Depends on who you ask. PCWorld's Chris Hoffman wrote in a post Thursday that though Microsoft just announced a new wave of Copilot+ PCs with extra AI features that use the neural processing unit (NPU) hardware built into the PC’s hardware for superpowered AI experiences, like Recall, there are going to be some limitations. Namely, if you bought an “AI” enabled PCs with NPUs already in 2024, they won't be getting these new features. That includes AI PCs with Intel, AMD, and Nvidia hardware… they simply don't meet Microsoft's latest hardware requirements for Windows 11’s big AI features, and some of these laptops even have a Microsoft Copilot key on the keyboard. Microsoft's “Copilot+ PC” certification is what's needed for new Windows 11. That, and a neural process unit (NPU) with at least 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS) to run the AI models. 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage to make room for the AI models is also a requirement. | https://www.pcworld.com/article/2341861/microsofts-copilot-pc-push-leaves-existing-ai-pcs-behind.html
50 | NOTES: - Intel’s Meteor Lake-powered “Core Ultra” CPUs are being branded “AI PCs.” Intel’s Meteor Lake platform includes an NPU, 10 TOPS - AMD has its own “Ryzen AI” hardware in a variety of PCs, too. 16 TOPS - “AI gaming laptops” with Nvidia GPUs aren't necessarily anything for AI Intel’s Meteor Lake NPUs only go up to 10 TOPS, while the NPUs in AMD’s Ryzen platform deliver up to 16 TOPS. | https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/microsofts-copilot-ai-pc-requirements-are-embarrassing-for-intel-and-amd/

64 | RD | Got some good feedback about Microsoft's new AI-powered service Recall. Jason wrote - "When I first heard about Recall, I was outraged but lacked the wherewithal at the time to express why. It struck me… the anger isn’t about the feature, it’s about the lack of trust that Microsoft will respect my choice and not change it behind my back. Widgets using Edge instead of the default browser. I turned off the display of apps on my Windows 11 lock screen and this month’s Patch Tuesday enabled the setting again. Onedrive is known to silently enable folder backup after it’s been disabled. So it’s not the feature that’s bad, it’s that I don’t trust that if I disable it that Microsoft will keep it disabled."
65 | Scott also wrote in - "I agree that it sounds private, but Tom asked the question of how they could make it more private. Two words - - Opt In. Lots of talk about how to turn it off, so it will be on by default. And most people will never Also, Microsoft's track record with privacy and following users' wishes is abysmal. They often reset settings or change them even if you specifically set them. I also, at this point, have no faith that anything they've said about on device data and not sending to them is true. Last point, and I don't have references handy for the discussions, but if anyone gets in your account, they'll have access. Yes, all bets are off with a compromised device, but Microsoft isn't doing well with security lately either. This is just another opportunity to make Microsoft's "features" into the end user's problem."

86 | sl | We've been talking all week about this whole OpenAI "Sky" voice and whether or not it was deliberately The Washington Post found internal OpenAI records that show the actress whose voice was used to train the "Sky" model was hired before OpenAI reached out to Scarlett Johansson about a deal. A casting call was put out in May last year that said actors should be “warm, engaging [and] charismatic.” No mention was made of Johansson or the movie Her. Johansson was contacted later that year in September after the Sky voice had been created. The Post got access to documents, recordings, casting directors, and the Sky actress’s agent. The Sky voice remains paused while OpenAI tries to reach an agreement with Johansson. | https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/05/22/openai-scarlett-johansson-chatgpt-ai-voice/?pwapi_token=eyJ0eXAiOiJKV1QiLCJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJyZWFzb24iOiJnaWZ0IiwibmJmIjoxNzE2MzUwNDAwLCJpc3MiOiJzdWJzY3JpcHRpb25zIiwiZXhwIjoxNzE3NzMyNzk5LCJpYXQiOjE3MTYzNTA0MDAsImp0aSI6ImU2NWY2NTJmLTA2YzktNGFiOS05ZjUwLTNkZTBmZTYzZThjNSIsInVybCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lndhc2hpbmd0b25wb3N0LmNvbS90ZWNobm9sb2d5LzIwMjQvMDUvMjIvb3BlbmFpLXNjYXJsZXR0LWpvaGFuc3Nvbi1jaGF0Z3B0LWFpLXZvaWNlLyJ9.f-ocMS2qhjTBNAcnpWT0wbIwizUXdK4TlTLd7_2vL_E
