19 | tm | TDK has announced a ceramic solid-state battery that uses oxide-based solid electrolytes and lithium-alloy anodes. Most lithium-ion batteries use liquid electrolytes which makes them less stable. Solid-state batteries are safe enough to wear next to your skin. And TDK says its battery should be cheaper to produce and have longer operating time, 1,000 watt-hours per liter. Traditional liquid-electrolyte coin batteries offer 400 Wh/l. TDK plans to replace coin cell batteries with this for wearables like watches and headphones. Sadly the ceramic material is too fragile for phone-sized batteries or larger. | https://www.cnbc.com/2024/06/17/apple-supplier-tdk-announces-solid-state-battery-breakthrough.html

21 | tm | Switzerland's Proton, maker of ProtonMail and other privacy-oriented software has done a reverse OpenAI. Proton AG will remain a for profit company but a nonprofit called the Proton Foundation has been created to be its major shareholder. This is similar to what Mozilla and Signal have done. Interestingly, The Information says OpenAI CEO Sam Altman floated the idea that it might change its structure to a for-profit business that the nonprofit board does not control. Right now OpenAI is a capped profit company controlled by its nonprofit parent organization. | https://techcrunch.com/2024/06/17/privacy-app-maker-proton-transitions-to-non-profit-foundation-structure/

23 | jry | Smartwatch and heart-rate monitor maker for Triathletes, Coros, is entering the smart cycling business. Its Dura GPS unit has a small 2.7-inch screen below some solar panels. Along with a big battery, the solar panels should give riders 120 hours of consecutive riding without having to recharge. The panels generate two hours of battery life for every hour of direct sunlight, so in the right conditions the battery might not need recharging much if at all. You can order now for $249 or 289 euros, shipping July 15th. | https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/new-coros-dura-computer/

29 | For two years McDonalds has been testing automated drive-thru ordering in partnership with IBM in 100 restaurants. It will end that partnership in all restaurants no later than July 26, 2024. Chief restaurant officer for McDonald’s USA, Mason Smoot, said they will evaluate a new partner and make a decision "on a future voice ordering solution by the end of the year.” | https://www.restaurantbusinessonline.com/technology/mcdonalds-ending-its-drive-thru-ai-test

Checkers and Rally’s, Hardee’s, Carl’s Jr., Krystal, Wendy’s, Dunkin and Taco Johns are either testing or implementing some kind of automated order-taking in drive-thrus. - That test followed the company’s sale of its McD Tech Labs to IBM that year.

52 | US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy wrote an opinion piece in the New York Times recommending the US pass a law requiring warning labels on social media. He cited studies bearing out the risks - Digital Wellness Lab's Pulse Survey showing less than half of 1,480 adolescents surveyed in the US said social media gave them body image issues. - Study published in the JAMA Psychiatry journal found that in a study of 6,595 US adolescents, spending more than three hours a day on social media was correlated with twice the incidence of symptoms of anxiety and depression. Acknowledge there was not consensus - study of 2891 Finnish adolescents, published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that depressive symptoms predicted increased social media use but not that social media use predicted depressive symptoms. - Oxford Internet Institute studied wellbeing across 72 countries and found no connection between increased use of Facebook and increase psychological harm. MIXED result - one study of Welsh students found that better wellbeing was associated with children who spoke online to other children they knew whereas children who spoke to people they did not know had poorer wellbeing, especially for teenage girls. So why the need for the warning then? Dr. Murthy wrote, "In an emergency, you don’t have the luxury to wait for perfect information. You assess the available facts, you use your best judgment, and you act quickly." Is this an emergency? | https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/17/24180005/surgeon-general-warning-labels-social-media-mental-health

66 | Hi guys, I got some questions regarding the satellite connectivity on iOS 18. I read many source reporting it will support iMessage and sms. iMessage makes sense, it’s a different protocol, created and controlled by Apple. SMS though, isn’t. For sms to function in this manner, they would need to be offering roaming via satellite. Else the only way I can think of right now would be some kind of spoofing of your sender id. This absolutely won’t be the case, not to mention that responses received over sms would go to your carrier, not Apple. So questions currently stand at, - does it support sms really, or RCS? - if it does support sms, is it roaming? - if it’s roaming, what will my carrier charge me? Sorry it’s not answers, just wanted to add to the conversation. Not up to date, but hope you got the pupper and all is going smoothly. 67 | Apple invested $450 million in infrastructure to support Emergency SOS via Satellite. Globalstar, Apple’s partner in satellite connectivity, charges around $12 a month to offer basic emergency services on its own devices. The subscription gets more expensive for those who want to send unlimited text messages.

97 | AI took their jobs. Now they get paid to make it sound human This report starts with an example of a writer who worked at a company that started using LLMs to ternate ideas for blog articles and an outline for them. The write then just had to turn the outline into a human-sounding post. Soon they switched to ChatGPT writing the articles too and the write just did a final polish. He told the BBC, "It was more editing than I had to do with human writers, but it was always the exact same kinds of edits. The real problem was it was just so repetitive and boring. It started to feel like I was the robot." Apparently job descriptions show that while there are fewer copywriter jobs than there used to be there are more "fix up awkward Ai writing jobs" now. The story also describes the arms race between SEO optimizers and AI detection software. Including a cottage business in how to "write like human so you don't trigger the AI detector." | https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240612-the-people-making-ai-sound-more-human
