| sl | Overnight several users reported unpredictable behavior from ChatGPT. One example the Verge pulled from a Reddit user was a request for a biography of the Jackson family of musicians that contained the line Schwittendly, the sparkle of tourmar on the crest has as much to do with the golver of the ‘moon paths’ as it shifts from follow.” At 10:40 PM eastern on Tuesday OpenAI acknowledged it was “investigating reports of unexpected responses from ChatGPT,” and a few minutes later annocuned it was working on a fix. The problem seems to have gone away but OPenAI says it's still monitoring the situation. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/21/24079047/chatgpt-malfunction-hallucination-responses-openai
| tm | Google has released Gemma 2B and 7B, two open-source AI models that let developers use closed-AI model Gemini more freely. The more lightweight Gemma models are supposed to be better for smaller tasks like simple chatbots or summarizations. Google claims its Gemma models “surpass significantly larger models on key benchmarks” and are “capable of running directly on a developer laptop or desktop computer.” You can try them out on Kaggle, Hugging Face, Nvidia’s NeMo, and Google’s Vertex AI. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/21/24078610/google-gemma-gemini-small-ai-model-open-source
| sl | At Nintendo Direct, the company announced that Grounded and Penitent are Xbox-exclusive games that will be exclusive no more when they arrive for the Nintendo Switch. Pentiment launches Thursday Feb. 22 and Grounded on April 16th. So that's two of the four Microsoft said would be coming. The Verge's sources think Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves are the other two. Those could still launch on the Switch later and any of the four could also come to the PS5. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/21/24078043/grounded-pentiment-nintendo-switch-release-microsoft-xbox-exclusive-games
| tm | ZTE's Libero Flip for the Japanese market is going for $420 — or just $265 for those who preorder. This might help indications that the flip market is back, as the Libero Flip is price well under the $1,000 Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, and darn near as low as the clearance-sale refurbished old Flips you can still find around the net. Libero Flip has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7-series chip inside, and a 6.9-inch, 2790 x 1188 foldable OLED panel, slightly larger than the Samsung. It includes a 50-megapixel main camera, a 2-megapixel depth cam, and a 16-megapixel selfie camera in the front. It runs Android 13 with 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, and it charges at up to 33W over its USB-C port. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/20/24078527/zte-libero-flip-japan-price-folding-flip-phone
| sl | The Wall Street Journal's sources say Reddit may set aside a chunk of shares in its upcoming IPO for 75,000 of its most active users. But as Mastodon user @carnage4life points out, "I was initially impressed because I thought they were gifting them shares. However an opportunity to buy Reddit shares at a $5B valuation hoping that it goes higher is more of a gamble than a perk." | https://www.wsj.com/finance/stocks/reddit-stock-ipo-buyers-users-58744446

| sl | Back in 2021, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger promised Intel’s customers and investors 5 nodes in 4 years, with the plan to go all-in on fabs and become a top-to-bottom foundry service for the entire world to use. Now that roadmap is seeing some light, with Intel’s first EUV-based node, Intel 4, available in the market today, and its high-volume counterpart, Intel 3, also ready. Intel is also readying its Gate-All-Around (GAAFET)/RibbonFET for 2024 and 2025. Today, Intel’s Foundry group – formerly Intel Foundry Services – held its first conference, Direct Connect. Direct Connect is Intel’s first chance to talk at length about the 5 nodes goal. Direct Connect is also Intel’s chance to update folks on what comes after those first 5 nodes. Intel Foundry wants to expand in capacity, customers, and tooling, and now the group is looking toward a slate of even more advanced nodes, but also a packaging technologies necessary to back them up. Roger, Intel didn't exactly deliver on Gelsinger's promise timing-wise, but what stood out to you about how far Intel has come? | https://www.anandtech.com/show/21271/intel-foundry-future-14a-foveros-direct-beyond

| sl | On Wednesday, Apple announced a free, standalone app called Apple Sports, sharing scores and stats to your iOS device, also designed to drive viewers to the Apple TV app to watch those live sports, which includes all Major League Soccer matches, due to a 10-year deal through Apple TV’s MLS Season Pass subscription add-on. Apple Sports includes a “Watch on Apple TV” button for each game, if it applies, which opens the Apple TV app to the service that’s livestreaming the event and where you can subscribe, if you haven't already. Apple Sports is in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. apple stores, with support for English, and French and Spanish where available. | https://variety.com/2024/digital/news/apple-sports-app-free-scores-stats-1235917206/

| sl | In the next OS software updates for phones, tablets, watches and Macs, Apple will add a new cryptographic protocol to its messaging service called PQ3. The new protocol is designed to be resistant to future attacks from quantum computers. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/21/24079081/apple-imessage-pq3-post-quantum-cryptography
| --- | https://www.wired.com/story/apple-pq3-post-quantum-encryption/
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| How much do we need to worry about Quantum computers?
| Quantum computers are making slow progress, but they are making progress. One thing they are going to be good at is breaking current encryption. Classical computers have to run through all possible combinations to brute force an encryption key. Make the key long enough and the length of time it will take to crack a ket becomes impractically long. Quantum computers can make multiple attempts at once, speeding up their process and making current very strong encryption not so strong. In that future where quantum computers can break encryption, malicious folks may grab data they can't crack now in order to crack it later. So to get ahead of the game, Apple is updating its encryption so even if they steal your message data, they won't be able to crack it when quantum computers get good enough. | https://security.apple.com/blog/imessage-pq3/
| Is anyone else worrying about quantum computers?
| Signal recently added quantum resistance to its encryption protocol too. Apple ranks current encryption at Level 1, Signal's at level 2 and Apple's PQ3 at level 3. Apple has a detailed post for folks who are really into encryption, but if you must know the short version, Level 2 adds quantum resistance to the key creation. Level 3 applies it to both the key creation and the ongoing message exchange. Keeping the key from getting cracked is very good protection, but Apple's version protects messages you even if somehow the key creation got cracked. | https://signal.org/blog/pqxdh/
| How has Apple tested it?
| There's no way to test how good this encryption is at resisting quantum computers, since they aren't good enough yet to crack it. But Apple says its protocol was assessed by an unnamed third-party security company and two groups of academics who have written papers attesting to its security.

| Rusty in Huntsville, AL: In response to the iPad form discussion with Lamarr. I have been a happy Android user since my first Gen iPhone would not allow me to download podcasts over my required AT&T unlimited data plan. But then I decided to get my pilots license. I decided Foreflight was the best electronic flight bag (EFB) for me. Foreflight is only available on Apple products. So I succumbed back to Apple for a single iPad. The iPad mini is the perfect form factor for flying small aircraft. You can clamp it to a mount on the yoke and it is just small enough to still read gauges around it while being large enough to read missed approach procedures. I have seen other pilots fly with larger iPads, but they are usually placed in inconvenient places.

| tm | Brian - Mini fan here. Same as other comments as to the size. I loved the size of the kindle which the mini is similar. Fits into pockets so easy to take with. I use it a Lot for reading and pdfs. Also card games work very well on that size. I also have an iPhone SE cause I like my phones smaller so the mini works well as the bigger screen.
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| sl | David - I became an iPad Mini fan when recording my sons' high school basketball games from the bleachers. I didn't enjoy viewing the games by squinting at my iphone Pro Max screen and had a hard time following the ball and action. But sizing up to the Mini was just right. It fit on my tripod and wasn't overly intrusive or obnoxious to those sitting behind and around me, and the screen was big enough I could get immersed in the action and not have to constantly glance over it to see where the ball went. I've also found it to be an excellent fit for seatback movie watching on planes. In its folding case it will slide into the brochures slot and be at eye level so I don't have to look down, like I do with a laptop, and leaving the traytop space available for other things.

| sl | You all laugh at going to Korea over a weekend to get that pizza, I actually know 4 people who went to Tokyo for lunch. My mother worked for American Eagle (commuter airline for American) and she had coworkers that did fly from Nashville to Tokyo had lunch and flew back to Nashville. I think the group did it more than once, but to different places. Of course, you have to take into account that the flight would not have been very expensive. I got a job there a couple years later and Nashville started a direct to London flight. The cost at the time was, for one way; $50 for Coach, $100 for Business, and $200 for First Class. Before you get to crazy, this was 1996 and I was making $7.50 an hour part-time. The last flight I took while working there was Business there and First back (and yes it was amazing), I had to wait 15 years to fly long distance and it sucked! - Jeffrey ----- Isn't Nashville to Tokyo like a 16 hour fight? They would have had to fly after dinner, have breakfast in the plane then land for lunch. - alfredo
