| sl | Apple may introduce more fees and restrictions as it starts allowing people to download apps outside of the iPhone’s closed ecosystem, in response to DMA regulations in the EU. Apple may review each app downloaded outside of its App Store, and sources tell the Wall Street Journal that the company also plans to collect fees from developers that offer downloads outside of the App Store. Those plans may yet change before Apple officially delivers them to the European Commission for approval. The commission will evaluate whether Apple's plan will make the market more open and meets the provisions of the Digital Markets Act. Apple has until March to comply. | https://www.wsj.com/tech/apple-plans-new-fees-and-restrictions-for-downloads-outside-app-store-f464f426?mod=followamazon
| tm | X announced support for passkeys on iOS in the US, the secure way to log into services without having to memorize a password. It's supported by the major operating systems and browsers so we just need a critical mass of websites to adopt it before we can ditch passwords altogether. X follows PayPal, TikTok and WhatsApp in the slow march of services adopting it. No word on when X might bring passkey support to non-iOS operating systems and non-US countries. But I bet the SEC wishes it had it earlier this year. | https://techcrunch.com/2024/01/23/x-adds-support-for-passkeys-on-ios-after-removing-sms-2fa-support-last-year/
| sl | BeReal, the social app that launched as a way to be more authentic and less staged, announced that starting February 6, brands and celebrities will be able to sign up as “RealBrands” or “RealPeople,” so fans can watch both share behind the scenes moments from their lives and work. Alongside the announcement BeReal told Techcrunch is now has 23 million daily active users, up from 20 million in August 2023. The company has also introduced new features like groups, mentions, multiple posts per day, pinned posts and a “friends of friends” feed. A recent Pew study reported that around 13% of U.S. teens use BeReal. | https://techcrunch.com/2024/01/24/bereal-which-now-has-23m-daus-is-onboarding-brands-and-celebs/
| tm | Twitch is changing how it shares revenue with its streamers, and it's mostly an increase. First of all, streamers no longer see their percentage drop after the first $100,000 shared. The split will stay 70% now. To qualify for the 70% revenue share you will only need 300 "plus points" not 350. And a new tier will start giving you 60% of revenue after you get 100 plus points. On the down side, starting June 3rd, the amount shared from members who use Amazon Prime to pay for a subscription will be calculated from a fixed rate instead of paid the same as a cash subscription. | https://techcrunch.com/2024/01/24/twitch-announces-60-40-revenue-split-in-expanded-plus-program/?guccounter=1
| sl | Nvidia RTX GPU owners have a new feature called RTX Video HDR, which uses AI to convert SDR color space video to HDR, as long as you have a HDR10-compatible monitor with HDR enabled in Windows. Nvidia’s RTX Video Super Resolution can upscale old, blurry web videos, but the HDR feature is part of today’s 551.23 Game Ready driver release for the new RTX 4070 Ti Super launch. It works in both Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/1/24/24048892/nvidia-rtx-video-hdr-feature-ai

| tm | Amazon-owned Ring is scrapping its Request for Assistance feature in its Neighbors app. That was the one which let police ask users for doorbell footage through the Neighbors app that was near an investigation and might provide information. Going forward, police will have to obtain a warrant for most of its video requests. | https://www.engadget.com/ring-is-reportedly-walking-back-its-police-friendly-stance-on-data-sharing-191514423.html?src=rss
| sl | Police can still request clips from Ring if they consider an event an “emergency”. In fact Amazon's Yassi Yarger confirmed gave a statement to the Verge adding that on “rare occasions,” Ring will provide information to law enforcement “when there is an imminent danger of death or serious physical injury, such as a kidnapping or an attempted murder.” Google will currently also show footage from Nest devices to police in emergencies, with no warrant required. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/1/24/24049165/ring-police-neighbors-app-clips-search-warrant
| NOTES: - Ring has history of working with police for user security footage. - Ring adjusted its policy in 2021 to require police to publicly request clips in the Neighbors app from users living in a specific area, rather than contacting people privately. - Other features in this update include “Ring Moments” designed to get users to share more than just crime and safety clips. It’s also rolling out a “Best of Ring” social feed.

| tm | A lot of folks have wondered why Apple is not in the conversation along with OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Anthropic and the others about Large Language Models. The Financial Times has an article looking into Apple's AI strategy. I think this is very Apple-y, tell me if you agree. With things like Chips and the iPhone Apple's strategy is to not be first to market, buy up talent, release a user-focused version of the product they pitch as superior. Here's what FT found - Apple bought 21 AI-related startups since the beginning of 2017 - In 2018 Apple hired Google's AI executive John Giannandrea. - Morgan Stanley says close to half of Apple's recent job postings include the term "deep learning." - At WWDC, Apple is expected to show off its own Large Language Model powering an improved Siri. - Apple has the hardware to do this. Obviously the M-series chips but also the Apple Watch's S9 chip can access and log data for Siri without needing the internet. The iPhone's A17 Pro chip has a neural engine Apple claims is twice as fast as the previous one. I'm guessing that this year at WWDC, Apple puts out a series of "smart" features for its operating systems that emphasize privacy and security by running on device. They play up their own LLMs and other models and try very hard never to say the word AI while doing it. What do you think? | https://arstechnica.com/apple/2024/01/apple-aims-to-run-ai-models-directly-on-iphones-other-devices/
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| NOTES - Apple open sourced an LLM with Columbia University in October called "Ferret" for helping recognize objects. -And Apple published a paper in December that describes a way to use flash memory to speed up local inferencing, aka processing queries.

| tm | On Monday we told you about the rapid rise and success of Palworld. Palworld, made by Pocket Pair, was once a meme. A joke. It's "Pokemon with guns." But then it launched in early access on Steam and everyone wanted to try it. Tuesday the game reached 1,864,421 concurrent players, passing Counter-Strrike's May 2023 peak. That leaves PUBG's January 2018 peak of 3,257,248 as the only game that has ever had more concurrent players. Pocket Pair says it has sold 6 million copies of Palworld in its first 4 days. | https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/palworld-has-surpassed-counter-strikes-concurrent-player-record-on-steam/
| sl | That said, you don't hear a lot of gamers praising this game. Pocket Pair had to issue a half apology and a road map for some basic features like Player-vs-player and end-game raid bosses. Pokemon fans also accuse the game of plagiarism, in part by using AI to create the character models. Nintendo, a co-owner of the Pokemon franchise, has yet to publicly comment on the game but has issued a take down notice for a video explaining how to mod Palworld to swap in-game characters with Pokemon ones. Scott, what's behind the game's sudden popularity and why is there controversy surrounding it? | https://kotaku.com/pokemon-palworld-ai-art-copyright-law-pocketpair-1851186580
| https://www.theverge.com/2024/1/23/24047854/nintendo-palworld-pokemon-mod-youtube-dmca
| SCOTT NOTES: - The amount of coverage and convo around the game is insane. - Originally announced 2021 - Pokemon sure, but its even more iterative of things like Tears of the Kingdom, Fortnite, Minecraft, Vallhiem, etc. The devs specifically call out Ark: Survival Evolved as a point of inspiration for them. - Not the first pokemon-like, but with sales like this, bound to raise eyebrows. - I'm like 50/50 on nintendo & gamefreak sending lawyers. - The meshes are a question, but no evedence of AI anywhere. - Previously developed by Pocketpair, AI: Art Imposter, that uses generative AI as a core mechanic. - My own experience with the game is pretty meh. Mileage may vary. - Iteration vs ripping off thoughts

| Mike Millz - Your comments about GRWM totally explains what my daughter (in college) does when she FaceTimes us and then starts doing her makeup and not talking. We're waiting to hear what she has to say but she just wants to hang out. Kids these days... As far as the ink jet discussion, I too bought a Brother laser printer years ago and left ink jets in the dustbin of history. If I need to print a picture, I'll upload the image to the drug store on the corner and pick it up in under an hour. In the past 10-15 years I think I've bought one or two toner cartridges -- so much money and frustration saved 🤓
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| tm | Kory writes in- I have been using laser printers for 15 years now! I own two Brother MFC's, one color and one Black and White (the BW for 15 years). Toner is expensive, but since I replace it every 5 years or so, I am not concerned. The real benefit is buying them for my family. Like many, I am tech support for my family. My calls from Mom have nearly gone away since I bought her a $300 color laser printer from Brother. To any listener who provides home tech support......GO LASER!
