| tm | The Wall Street Journal reports that Microsoft will allow Call of Duty for Xbox Game Pass subscriptions service during an Xbox showcase June 9th. Call of Duty is one of Activision's biggest revenue generators, and some think it might make less money if it's included in the subscription. But it's possible it will cost extra to get Call of Duty in Game Pass or Microsoft might raise the price of the subscription overall. And while we're talking about Microsoft events, don't forget Microsoft BUILD is next week and Microsoft is holding a special event on Monday May 20th. It's expected to be all about AI, but also show off new Windows Surface devices running on Qualcomm's Snapdragon Elite chips. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/17/24158934/microsoft-call-of-duty-xbox-game-pass-plans

The retailer's product was made in partnership with Good Meat which is part of the US-based Eat Just. If you head to Huber Butchery, look for the chicken-like Good Meat 3. But be advised it's only 3% animal cells. The rest is a more typical plant-based protein. It's selling for seven Singapore dollars a pound, or about five dollars US. | https://www.techinasia.com/sg-hubers-butchery-retailer-sell-labgrown-meat

The site has made the transition to make X.com its fundamental domain name. Typing twitter.com will redirect in all core URLs to a version with X.com. The last major reference to Twitter is now gone. 24 | sl | Sony Music sent a letter to more than 700 tech companies, warning them not to use their music for “training, development or commercialization of AI systems” without permission. This is a necessary step if Sony wants to negotiate rights deals with these companies. As an example, YouTube came to an agreement with major music companies for a strict set of rules regarding the use of AI voices for music. As a result, YouTube has a product called Dream Track which lets users generate songs in the style of a limited number of artists from text prompts. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/17/24158887/sony-music-ai-training-letter

| tm | We have prepared OpenAI news for you three ways today. Deals, Features and Failures.
| tm | - Reddit signed a deal to give OpenAI access to its API of real-time posts. Reddit will use some OpenAI tech to add features for Redditors - Reddit is NOT licensing its data to OpenAI for training - Reddit DID give Google a license to train off Redddit data in Feb. Google also got access ot the real-time API. In that deal Reddit got access to Vertex API to improve its own search. TAKEAWAYS - Not all improvements to OpenAI products need to be training data apparently. Real-time info is a weakness that this helps reduce. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/16/24158529/reddit-openai-chatgpt-api-access-advertising

| sl | Korean news outlet Chosun reports that LG is no longer making the Signature OLED R TV that rolls down and hides within a stand, with LG said to be already repurposing that manufacturing line for other TVs at a plant in at the Gumi plant in Gyeongbuk, South Korea. If you don't even recall this exact LG model, it was originally shown off at CES as a prototype back in 2018, but it didn't actually go on sale until 2021. It was also $100,000 for a 65-inch 4K TV that needed to rise out of a side table of sorts. TV options have changed since then. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/16/24158263/lg-rollable-oled-r1-r-tv-discontinued

| tm | Laptop computers introduced us to the 2.5" hard drive form factor but SSDs and NVMe solid state drives have supplanted them in most of the market. But the 2.5" hard drive isn't dead yet. Western Digital introduced a new 6TB external hard drive which will go into the company's My Passport, Black P10, and G-Drive ArmorATD product line. The drives are thicker than 15mm of current 5TB 2.5" models meaning they won't fit into existing laptop drive bays. The drives are avaliable now at retailers and range in price from $200 for the WD My Passport Ultra up to $230 for the SanDisk Professional G-Drive ArmorATD. Patrick where are we with storage these days? | https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/external-hdds/western-digital-rolls-out-new-25-inch-hdds-for-the-first-time-in-seven-years-is-6tb-the-swan-song-for-25-inch-hard-drives
| https://www.anandtech.com/show/21400/not-dead-yet-wd-intros-6tb-25-inch-external-hard-drives
| First up, one correction: 2.5" drives will fit in existing drive bays in very old laptops... humor aside, as laptop mfgs have moved towards a) soldering storage onto the motherboard or b) using M.2 SSD storage, the weee expansion cards, demand for 2.5" drives has dropped. A lot.
| And depending on which story you read, it took either 6, 7, or 8 years to get to 6TB 2.5" drives
| Where those 2.5" drives have remained strong is in portable storage... though, much like SSDs have replaced most ever rotating hard drive anywhere other than massive drives used for nas server or desktop storage, - see roger's 2 cents for this week - a lot of the market is all about SSDs. I think the sweet spot for a lot of portable storage is a 1TB SSD for under $100.
| For fun, I started digging into Microcenter's website, I found five 2.5" traditional internal hard drives from 1-2TB from $52 to $99.
| 25 external 2.5" drives w/ ye old rotating media, starting at $65 for 1TB maxing at $130 for 5TB...
| And 47 external SSDs, in all form factors, starting w/ $46 for 500GB, $75-ish for 1TB, 4TB drives starting under $200, and the max being an 8TB Samsung T5 for $619
| For cmparison, a 20TB HD for NAS or, hey, your massive collection of photos in your desktop PC which I know you're backing up somewere else, right??? ... $300-$450
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Notes: - WD My Passport Ultra and WD My Passport Ultra for Mac with USB-C both retail for $199.99; - WD My Passport and WD My Passport for Mac are $179.99 - WD My Passport Works With USB-C is $184.99 - the gaming-focused WD_Black P10 Game Drive sells for $184.99 - SanDisk Professional G-Drive ArmorATD is $229.99.
| Big honking portable storage... on a single drive, that's pretty much where 2.5" drives are... 4TB SSD = $300+ and bigger SSDs are rare, and cost 3X as much!!!

| Laurent in finally-feels-like-winter-is-over Montreal wrote in - "On Wednesday's show you had a question about [LLM model] context windows. Here is what I use in my training to explain the concept. Think of the credits at the end of a movie. As the credits roll, they disappear off the screen, never to be seen again… unless you rewind, but that's a whole 'nother story. Conversations with an LLM are similar. The credits are the content of the conversation. The screen is the context window. The larger the context window (so, a taller screen), the more information the LLM can retain before forgetting the beginning of the conversation."

| Our spanish language host Dan Campos wrote in- "Since the race for streaming now is heading to a place where the bundles are the hot item, I was wondering about who wins and loses with such wonderful offerings. In a good part of Latin America, Mercado Libre offers a couple of interesting options for their customers within Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, Brasil, Mexico, Peru and Ecuador. 1- Mercado Play. This is a free service with a lot of series and movies with ads included, similar to Tubi or PlutoTV. You just need to have a free Mercado Libre account to use it. It also has a limited offering for Disney+ shows. 2- Meli+ (Meli Más) For 129 pesos (about 7.80 USD) you get a similar offer to Amazon Prime. You'll get free delivery for what you buy on the digital marketplace and it also includes access to Disney+ and Star+ (our local version of Hulu), as well as a free year on Deezer Premium. In comparison, the Disney/Star combo costs $269 pesos (about 16.15 USD) if you get it directly from Disney. If you decide to use Meli+ as your streaming platform you'll also get a 30% discount on Max, Paramount+, ViX Premium or all three. But your individual accounts for the services can't connect if you decide to use Meli Más. This makes me wonder if the bundles announced by Disney and Warner, or Comcast with Paramount and Netflix can be as attractive as the ones offered by third parties. There are other services like MVSHub where you can pick and choose different streaming services where you can save about 20-30, but they don't offer Disney services. Last but not least, in México, regulatory organizations such as the COFECE (Federal Economic Competition Commision) have already issued warnings and wants to regulate the streaming offerings from Amazon and Mercado Libre, mentioning that including streaming to to their delivery subscriptions is anticompetitive to other digital marketplaces. You can check NTX episodes 350 and episode 361 for more information about that."
