19 | sl | A lawsuit filed Wednesday by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, on behalf of researcher Ethan Zuckerman, an associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, argues that US law requires that Meta must let people use unofficial add-ons to have more control over their social feeds. This is part of an ongoing debate over tools that give users extra privacy options or that collect research data. Zuckerman’s suit specificaly wants to prevent Facebook from blocking a new browser extension for Facebook that he works on called Unfollow Everything 2.0, which would let users more easily “unfollow” friends, groups, and pages on the service, taking them out of a user’s newsfeed. In 2021, British developer Louis Barclay created the original tool Unfollow Everything, and eventually was permanently banned. | https://www.wired.com/story/meta-section-230-users-algorithm/

Now Microsoft account owners can also generate passkeys across Windows, Android, and iOS, letting them sign in to a Microsoft account without having to type a password in every time. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/2/24147124/microsoft-passkeys-support-consumer-msa
22 | jry | Apple is making tweaks to a core technology fee (CTF) that can affect iOS developers in the European Union in accordance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA): Developers of free apps can now avoid the fee entirely, and devs with annual global revenue under €10M get a three-year “free on-ramp”, essentially a pay later solution. CTF remains opt-in for iOS developers in the EU, as Apple continues to offer its standard business terms, but the CTF covers things like allowing sideloading of apps, third-party app stores, and support for alternative payment tech than Apple’s own — and must agree to the set of business terms Apple has laid out. | https://techcrunch.com/2024/05/02/apple-adds-more-carve-outs-to-its-eu-core-tech-fee-after-criticism-from-devs/

27 | sl | Universal Music Group (UMG) and TikTok have ended their standoff over royalty payments and AI policies. The companies announced they've struck a deal to bring the Universal's music library music back to TikTok's platform. The agreement includes Tiktok delivering “improved remuneration for UMG’s songwriters and artists, new promotional and engagement opportunities for their recordings and songs, and industry-leading protections with respect to generative AI.” The companies say they'll also work on “new monetization opportunities utilizing TikTok’s growing e-commerce capabilities and will work together on campaigns supporting UMG’s artists across genres and territories globally.” Justin, sounds like the two companies agreed to financial terms. But this sounds a lot like UMG needed TikTok to better protect against AI tools? | https://variety.com/2024/music/news/tiktok-universal-music-group-settle-royalty-dispute-licensing-agreement-1235987271/

36 | jry | As the US VS Google trial winds down with closing arguments Thursday, details from the Department of Justice's antitrust lawsuit reveal that Google paid Apple $20 billion in 2022 for default search engine status in Safari. The DOJ accuses Google of using its size as an advantage to prevent competitors from entering the search market.. and how much it pays Apple is a big part of that. According to a report from Bloomberg, court documents revealed that Google indeed paid Apple $20 billion in 2022 to be the default search engine on Apple platforms, and that in 2020, Google's payments constituted 17.5% of Apple's operating income. | https://appleinsider.com/articles/24/05/02/google-paid-apple-20-billion-to-be-default-search-engine-in-2022

51 | sl | In Feburary Yann Coatanlem, Co-Founder of GlassView and a Member of Paris School of Economics's Board of Directors, wrote an opinion piece on the Financial Times titled "Why Europe is a laggard in tech". Coatanlem makes the argument that Europe is falling behind in the tech development relative to the US and China. As an example he states that investment in tech R&D is only one fifth of the amount in the US and half of that in China. While in AI, the US invests 50 times more than Europe. He identifies the slower pace and expense of restructing businesses due to tighter labor regulations as the primary culprit. He recommends labor protection laws for those salaried employees making above a certain level, allowing the existing social welfare model to continue while giving companies more flexiblity. | https://www.ft.com/content/d4fda2ec-91cd-4a13-a058-e6718ec38dd1?accessToken=zwAGElmpBqBIkdPU_aLskc1KE9OgWOZxjsON0Q.MEYCIQDoXWTIWG1JPDrVBmtlwVbSz0BZKXjSLJupszodqxOWjQIhAMhQ88Q2C2d6IA97rlJDK4XG1pv80UE_FUGo8MgmMnO5&sharetype=gift&token=57a8ec59-ec40-422b-adff-59d46a7c4082

59 | sl | Doug in Michigan wrote in, he works at a competitor of GM's in electrical systems architecture and had some feedback on our story yesterday about GM's Ultifi Carplay competitor- "You thought that GM was making a data play with Ultifi citing the idea that if they use CarPlay they wouldn't have access to information about things like how many miles you're driving or how fast you're going. This isn't likely to be true unless Apple has created some extremely different contracts than they had in the past. Remember that speed, location, mileage, braking, steering, acceleration, etc. actually come from the car to the Apple device and also virtually all new vehicles have their own data modem to get info off the vehicle independent of your phone. Therefore, they already have access to any of that data based on whatever terms they have in place when you buy the car. (Location is there because vehicles have emergency systems that notify first responders in a crash as well as supporting lots of other features such as identifying which roads are safe to use for hands free driving) Apple / Google get more information such as your preferences are for media and that certainly has value. However, it's more likely to me that Sarah's comments about rental cars hit closer to home for this story. She talked about getting a rental and immediately having the same experience as she has with her own car. Apple and Google want to take over the major User Interface touch points in the vehicle and the more that they do that, the more the underlying vehicle becomes a commodity. There are some buying segments that care about the vehicle per se, but there are a number of buyers getting a box on wheels that they use to do their tasks and they aren't extremely loyal to one box vs. another. My guess is that GM is making the long play to enable themselves to create a differentiated UI identity for their vehicles to increase stickiness with their buyers. Getting the extra usage data is a welcome bonus."
60 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
61 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
62 | jry | John in Montana also wrote in - "The underlying platform that GM’s vehicles currently run on is Android Automotive. This is different than Android Auto, it is directly controlling the infotainment while Android Auto and CarPlay are projections of a phone into the infotainment. Many manufacturers are using Android Automotive these days, including my 22 Silverado, and it absolutely supports both phone projection systems. The choice to not allow Android Auto or CarPlay is fully a GM choice - the Honda Prologue is a shared platform with the Blazer EV and runs Android Automotive with CarPlay and Android Auto! GM was recently caught selling driving data to LexisNexis. The “opt in” was barely that, sometimes not even agreed to by the buyer, and definitely not advertised as “can affect your insurance rates”. I got my LexisNexus data and sure enough it was pages and pages of my trips! I feel legitimately violated, and I’m typically pretty privacy focused. I’m a lifelong GM buyer who has bought their last GM vehicle if they expand these plans to ICE vehicles. GM is no Apple. GM is choosing to make the experience worse for the sake of making a few bucks. I will take my dollars elsewhere before I buy a vehicle without CarPlay."

90 | sl | Do you miss your old Nokia 3210? Even if you never had one, you know the phone. HMD, which now makes Nokia phones, may be rebooting the classi 3210 which first launched back in 1999. HMD recently hinted on X that it planned to reboot a Nokia classic soon – and thanks to leaks from the Finnish retailer Giganti (via NokiaMob), it looks to be the 3210 and may officially launch on May 8 (with an on-sale date of May 15). The leaked specs include a 2.4-inch QVGA color screen (a slight upgrade from the original's 1.5-inch monochrome display) and the addition of a 2MP f/2.8 camera on the back that can shoot 720p video. 4G connectivity also means the 3210's battery life probably won't be as long as the original's. But a 1,450 mAh battery should it alive for a few days. | https://www.techradar.com/phones/the-retro-nokia-phone-everyone-owned-25-years-ago-will-get-a-reboot-soon-and-yes-it-has-snake
