Neuralink reported it had implanted its tech in the first human patient as a trial back in January. The company posted Wednesday that some of the threads that connected the device to neurons retracted, which reduced the ability to measure speed and accuracy. Neuralink says it compensated by modifying the algorithm that interpreted the signals and improving the techniques for translating those signals to cursor movements. This doesn't pose a health risk however, and the patient is reportedly still using it 8 hours/day. | https://www.wsj.com/tech/neuralinks-first-brain-chip-implant-in-a-human-appeared-flawless-there-was-a-problem-637f1adc?st=zhxy27lyw090lg4
20 | rd | Disney and Warner Brothers Discovery announced a combined streaming service bundle including Disney+, Hulu and Max content for one price starting sometime this summer. What that price might be wasn't shared. ESPN+ also wasn't mentioned as part of the bundle, but Disney CEO Bob Iger previously said main ESPN content would be coming to Disney+ by the end of the year. Disney is also partnering with Fox and Warner on a combined sports service. And reportedly Paramount wants to bundle Paramount+Showtime with Peacock. | https://deadline.com/2024/05/disney-plus-hulu-max-bundle-streaming-milestone-1235909265/
21 | sl | As is always the case with a successful, respected, beloved, controversail, or combination of all 4 CEO, Bloomber's Mark Gurman wrote Wednesday that when it comes to who might replace Apple CEO Tim Cook at some point, things aren't totally clear. Sources tell Gurman that if a change were to be made soon, Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams is the most obvious next Apple CEO. But Williams is only a few years younger than Cook and the Apple board reportedly wants someone at the helm who will stick around for a decade, if not longer. If Cook remains CEO for another few years, the report points to John Ternus, Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, as the “most likely successor”. | https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-05-08/apple-s-next-ceo-list-of-aapl-insiders-who-could-succeed-tim-cook
22 | rd | A new study from Pew Research Center surveyed 1,423 U.S. teens between age 13 and 17 about their video game habits – if they play, how often they play, how friendhsips are forged, and if games get in the way of them doing well in school or sleeping well. 85% of U.S. teens say they play video games, with 41% playing daily. 72% of players say gaming is a way to spend time with friends, with over half saying gaming helps their problem-solving skills, and 41% also saying it has hurt their sleep. Bullying is an ongoing problem, with 80% of all teens saying harassment over video games is a problem. | https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2024/05/09/teens-and-video-games-today/
23 | sl | On Wednesday OpenAI published its "model spec" which lists the rules OpenAI says should govern its models, like ChatGPT. These rules help create filters and tuning that reduce false or dangerous responses. Developer intent is also a big part of the model spec. For example, using a model to answer questions about language learning shouldn't include other topics. OpenAI also wants to distinguish health information from NSFW content, with the document explaining "We're exploring whether we can responsibly provide the ability to generate NSFW content in age-appropriate contexts." | https://venturebeat.com/ai/openai-posts-model-spec-revealing-how-it-wants-ai-to-behave/

27 | rd | Things are feeling a bit chaotic over at Xbox. Tuesday, three Xbox subsidiaries were shuttered, with an absorption of a fourth. Two of the studios affected included Arkane Austin, and Tokyo-based Tango Gameworks, maker of action game Hi-Fi Rush. Bloomberg's sources say Tango was in the process of pitching a sequel due to critical acclaim of the game, which would require continued investment from Xbox. Also reportedly this week, Xbox started offering voluntary severance agreements to producers, quality assurance testers and other staff at ZeniMax, which Xbox purchased in 2020 for $7.5 billion. The sources also say Xbox is planning more cuts. | https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-05-08/xbox-studio-closures-microsoft-plans-more-cost-cutting-measures-after-layoffs?accessToken=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJzb3VyY2UiOiJTdWJzY3JpYmVyR2lmdGVkQXJ0aWNsZSIsImlhdCI6MTcxNTE5ODUzNywiZXhwIjoxNzE1ODAzMzM3LCJhcnRpY2xlSWQiOiJTRDZOSzZEV1gyUFMwMCIsImJjb25uZWN0SWQiOiJCMUVBQkI5NjQ2QUM0REZFQTJBRkI4MjI1MzgyQTJFQSJ9.Ae8Wc_YmUJla6VHol8aa5AIVOUAmdYTiRnQ2nKph6NY
28 | sl | During a town hall with ZeniMax staff on Wednesday morning, Xbox president Matt Booty said that the company’s studios had been spread too thin — using the analogy of “peanut butter on bread” — and that leaders across the division were understaffed, and closing studios opened up resources elsewhere, Jill Braff, head of ZeniMax studios, said in the town hall that she hoped the reorganization would allow the division, which also develops Fallout and Doom, to work more closely on fewer projects, and that “It’s hard to support nine studios all across the world with a lean central team with an ever-growing plate of things to do.” Shannon, plenty of folks in the industry are shaking their heads that Microsoft bought up a bunch a gaming companies only to say, woops, we can't support all these folks. 30 | NOTES: - The video game industry has seen big economic shifts post-pandemic. Recently, Microsoft’s gaming division cut 1,900 jobs in February, mostly at Activision Blizzard. - Subscription service Xbox Game Pass offer access to downloadable games for a monthly fee. - Analysis firm Circana, said that monthly, non-mobile, video-game subscription spending in the US “has been flat to low single-digit growth” since the middle of 2021. - During Microsoft's most recent quarter, sales of Xbox content and services were up 62%, but Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad notes that was due to the acquisition of Activision Blizzard

36 | rd | TikTok announced Thursday (that's today) that it will start adding an "AI-Generated" label to third-party AI-generated content watermarked with Content Credentials, the technology from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA),founded by Microsoft, Adobe, and other companies. TikTok already labels content made with TikTok AI effects with an AI flag but will start automatically labeling content uploaded to the platform with Content Credentials tags from platforms such as DALL·E 3 and Bing Image Creator. Google has pledged to support Content Credentials as well, and in a later phase, TikTok will start adding Content Credential tags to the metadata of content created with TikTok's AI effects to content downloaded for posting elsewhere. | https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/9/24152667/tiktok-ai-generated-label-content-credentials-cai-c2pa

51 | rd | Back in Feburary, Motherboard posted a story by Joseph Cox, titled "How I Broke Into a Bank Account With an AI-Generated Voice". In the report Cox details how he was able to fool his bank's Voice ID security system by using a generative AI version of his voice. Although Cox's four initial attempts failed, he eventually found success using ElevenLabs voice creation service. The bank offered only one follow up security challenge, his birthdate, that Cox also bypassed using an AI generated version of his voice. | https://www.vice.com/en/article/dy7axa/how-i-broke-into-a-bank-account-with-an-ai-generated-voice
52 | sl | Cox points out that although Lloyds of London was the bank used in the demostration, many banks in the US also offer the Voice ID security feature including TD Bank, Chase, and Wells Fargo. Cox adds that after sending the video to the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau the agency replied “The CFPB is concerned with data security, and companies are on notice that they’ll be held accountable for shoddy practices. We expect that any firm follow the law, regardless of technology used.” Shannon - as someone who follows data security issues closely, how big is this issue?

65 | So Amazon launched, to barely a whimper. To call it underwhelming is being kind. It is extremely sparse with very limited products, most categories barely have two pages of products that are available to order, with the majority of products listed marked as unavailable. They have partnered with local couriers for delivery. They are not offering Prime, not offering cross shipment from their UK or US stores and they offer no Kindle sales or books. Amazon has shipped selected categories of products from the US and UK market places for years, the delivery fee was high, but they handled the import and duty parts of it very well including billing in local currency. Kindles have been available from the international store with 5 business day delivery since probably the time they launched it outside the USA. Prime Video operates for some time here, so they are not unknown. Takealot is the biggest player here and they have very much moulded themselves on the Amazon model. Most things under the sun, with their own fast delivery and distribution network and large third party marketplace. Also very active in our market are the three largest grocery chains offering store delivery with online ordering. (Amazon) has been recruiting aggressively locally and have rented warehouse space in the three largest metros (Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg) so it looks like they are here for the longer term, but they have a lot of work to do to be compelling. AWS on the otherhand, massive player locally and have been for a while. Thinus (Tee-nus) Cape Town
