|First of all what is and is not happening|
New amendment updating records retention to include electronic methods, not just paper, open for public comment which if approved would enter the register October 18
Adds this "expand the categories of records to include the following: country of nationality; country of residence; the USCIS Online Account Number; social media handles, aliases, associated identifiable information, and search results;"
- DHS says the rule is not new policy but an effort to be transparent.
This new rule is NOT
- related to granting of visas (that's the State Department and a different issue)
- About border patrol checking devices (border patrol agents said in July that they wouldn't search through a person's cloud data)
- Asking for access to private communications. Just notifying that public posts may be searched
This new rule IS
- Adding information to the Alien File kept on all immigrants already
- Acknowledging that DHS collects and retains public postings by immigrants in a database
- inclusive usernames and search results on those names
What's up for debate
- Should the government do this? (not is it legal, but is it a good idea)
- Does it have a chilling effect on speech?
- Does it make the country safer?

Just heard the details on Face id on today's show, given by Apple and specifically the fact that, if the face is not recognized but the use put in the password, it will consider the face scan as a false negative and adjust its saved scan.
What will happen as my fiancee grabs my phone, as she often does, her face will get scanned, then she puts in my password to use my phone ? Will the phone starts mashing both our faces together??
I guess this relates to the more general question of how can we give access to our secure devices to one other person? Right now my fiancee has a finger in my touch id and she gets access to my phone that way. Seems that faceid won't allow for a second face to be added, so how can I share my device while maintaining the integrity of my own face scan?
Love the show!
