9 | I teach two elementary German courses at the college level (Elementary German 1 and 2) at El Camino College in Torrance, California (www.elcamino.edu). My courses are asynchronous, online courses now, and likely for the coming academic year, because of the epidemic but they may go back to being face-to-face courses. We use Canvas as our Learning Management System. Each week on our Canvas course website, students must complete 2-3 quizzes, 1 speaking exercise (live or submitted online), 1 culture and 1 grammar discussion, and sometimes a pronunciation exercise. Students must meet with me live every other week for at least 10 minutes. During that time, they prepare a speaking exercise with one or two partners. After the exercise, we speak in German. The course is broken up into modules that roughly follow those of their curriculum (grenzenlos-deutsch.com). The main curriculum is from the OER grenzenlos-deutsch.com but I also use some of the lessons from The University of Texas' OER Grimm Grammar (https://coerll.utexas.edu/gg/) and some lessons from Deutsche Welle (https://www.dw.com/en/learn-german/s-2469). Grades are based on the weekly quizzes, speaking exercises, cultural discussions and on a final oral project. The course catalogue descriptions: Elementary German I 4 units 5 hours lecture Recommended Preparation: eligibility for ENGL 1A Credit, degree applicable Transfer CSU, UC This course introduces students to the development of skills for language acquisition in speaking, listening, reading, and writing linguistically appropriate German. Students are also introduced to the cultural background of the language, including relationships among cultural practices and perspectives and the general aspects of everyday life. Technological support includes videos, DVDs, audio CDs, and internet access to publishers’ websites for tutoring and other support. Note: The course is comparable to two years of high school German. Elementary German II 4 units 5 hours lecture Prerequisite: GERM 1 with a minimum grade of C or equivalent Credit, degree applicable Transfer CSU, UC This course, taught within the context of German culture, is a continuation of the study of elementary German with an emphasis on listening, speaking, reading and writing. Note: The prerequisite for this course is comparable to two years of high school German. |
