2	You have 2 possibilities that start with Math 1 in 8th Grade but with different choices in 12th grade. What will trigger the change?	This depends on what the student wants to study and where the student is interested in attending college.
3	What is Math 4?	NC requires 4 math credits for graduation. NC Math 4 is a continuation of NC Math 3. There are also other options for getting the 4th math credit. Half of it is algebra-based and the other half includes work in statistics.
4	If we are taking Row 2, then can we double up in some grade and take AP Statistics too?	This depends on the school and availability of the courses. Speak with a counselor to ask about this.
5	What is the difference between AP Calculus BC and AB?	This is like taking Calculus 1 and 2 in college. AB is the first level of Calculus and BC is the second level of Calculus. This depends on the pacing. Some schools offer both in one year and others offer them in 2 years.
6	Since math is only a semester do kids double up and take Math 2 and 3 in the same year?	If a student wants to do this to take more rigorous courses, this is available to do at some schools. Students should take math each year of high school.
7	If our child is in Math 1 in 8th grade would she go into math 2 honors?	Many times students will go straight into NC Math 2 Honors. However, this is based on a teacher recommendation.
8	Can you take Math 4 after pre-calc?	This is not common, but you can do that. Both Pre-Calculus and Math 4 count for the 4th math credit.
9	If our child is in Math 1 here my in 8th grade would she go into math2 honors? Does she. Red to test to get into it or a higher level?	Students who get a 5 on the End of Course exam for Math 1 should take Math 2 honors. Whether a student takes honors or not is usually based on a teacher recommendation.
10	What is difference between Math 2 and Math 2 Honors?	This sometimes depends on the teacher, but generally it is about the depth of thinking.
11	if student is doing NC Math 1 in 8th grade, then do they only need to get 3 more credits for Math in high school?	That is correct. However, it is recommended for students to take a math course each year of high school. This looks best on college applications.
12	Why should students take AP courses? is there any benefits taking AP maths?	Students have class everyday all year in AP math classes and this helps prepare students for college math. Students also have the opportunity to earn college credits while in high school. There is also a GPA boost for students who take AP classes. AP classes are out of 5.0 instead of 4.0 (A=5.0, B=4.0, C=3.0, etc.)
13	Are there teachers for every AP math courses?	Yes. Each school offers AP Calculus, but AP Statistics isn't offered everywhere. There is an online option when there isn't a teacher available.
14	so you may have answered the question but just for clarification. If my child who is in Math 1 currently doesn't score a 5 at the EOC. Will my child by directed to just the Math 2 in 9th grade?	Not necessarily...this depends on teacher recommendation. A student can also request a waiver if they are not recommended for honors.
15	Is it expected that an 8th grader taking Math 1 this year go into Math 2 honors as shown in the chart?	Not necessarily. This is the path that most students choose, but it is really an individual situation based on the student's interest and ability as well as the teacher recommendation.
16	Are honors courses weighted more for gpa? And/or recorded as honors for college transcript applications?	Yes. They are listed as "honors" on the transcript. For regular (CP) courses, an A=4.0, B=3.0, etc. For honors courses, an A=4.5, B=3.5, etc. For AP courses, an A=5.0, B=4.0, etc.
17	Do you have to take honors to get into AP?	Pre-Calculus is only offered at the honors level. It is not necessary to take honors before AP Statistics, but you may want to have an honors course to get used to the rigor.
18	for all the honors courses seen on the screen there is corresponding college prep course?	You can find all of the courses offered at different levels in the High School Program of Studies. You can find a link at http://bit.ly/HSprogramoptions.
19	Since freshmen get last choice when registering for classes will an incoming freshman who has taken math 2 in 8th grade have difficulty getting into math 3?	No. It may be a problem to take 2 math courses in a year during 9th grade, but getting the next math course in a sequence is not going to be limited.
20	Can Math 2 be taken again in 9th grade if taken in 8th?	It can be...depending on the reason. This should be discussed with your counselor.
21	How is it determined if a student needs to take Foundations of Math 1?	This is a conversation with the student's teacher in 8th grade. Not all schools offer the Foundations of Math 1 course.
22	My child is in Math 1 in 8th so who can tell me (the parent) if my child will take math 2 or math2 honor?	This is a decision that is made collaboratively with the parent and the teacher recommendation. (IsPre-calculus only for Honor student or can a Math 3 student can qualify?
23	Do you recommend Discrete math for a student who will be taking Python programming courses? Is discrete math offered in both reg and honors?	It is offered in regular and honors. The course was designed to prepare students for computer science courses.
24	Difference between Math 2 and Math 2 honor?	Math 2 honors is going to be taught at a higher level of rigor. There may be concepts that are included in honors that are not included in regular. The depth of thinking is greater in an honors course, and students are expected to be more independent in honors.
25	Is it typical for a student to go into Math 2 honors after taking math 1 as an 8th grader since taking Math 1 as an 8th grader is advanced?	Yes. This is typical, but is still based on a teacher recommendation.
26	Will this presentation be available on the UCPS website?	Yes. You will be able to find it on the http://bit.ly/HSprogramoptions webpage under the calendar.
27	When a child takes math 1 in middle school, does the grade from that course go toward their gpa in highschool?	No. The credit transfers but the GPA does not.
