18 | JH | This episode of All About Android is brought to you by Bitwarden. Bitwarden is the only open-source, cross-platform password manager that can be used at home, at work, or on the go, and is trusted by millions; even our very own Steve Gibson has switched over! With Bitwarden, all of the data in your vault is end-to-end encrypted, not just your passwords. Protect your data and privacy with Bitwarden by adding security to your passwords with strong, randomly generated passwords for each account. Go further with the Username Generator, create unique usernames for each account, or even use any of the five integrated email alias services. Bitwarden has new features to announce in their latest February release, including: Significant updates to the Key Derivation Function encryption: New Bitwarden accounts will use 600,000 KDF iterations for PBKDF2, as recommended by OWASP. Argon2ID is also an optional alternative KDF for users seeking specialized protection. A stronger master password has a higher impact on security than KDF iterations, so you should have a long, strong, and unique master password for the best protection. Master password security checks: New users who create their accounts on mobile apps, browser extensions, and desktop apps can now check known data breaches for their prospective master password via HIBP. Logging in with a device is now available for additional clients. Login requests can also be initiated from browser extensions, mobile apps, and desktop apps. Share private data securely with coworkers, across departments, or the entire company with fully customizable and adaptive plans: Bitwarden's Teams Organization option is $3 a month per user, while their Enterprise Organization plan is just $5 a month per user. Individuals can always use the Basic Free Account for an unlimited number of passwords. Upgrade any time to a Premium account for less than $1 a month, or bring the whole Family Organization option to give up to 6 users premium features for only $3.33 a month! Call to Action (verbatim - URL 2 times) At TWiT, we are fans of password managers. Bitwarden is the only open-source, cross-platform password manager that can be used at home, on the go, or at work, and is trusted by millions of individuals, teams, and organizations worldwide. 50 | JH | I've just moved to Japan and my Japanese is dreadful. it's not an easy language ya know? Some of the best apps for getting around on the trains are Japanese apps, and you guessed it, in the Japanese language ONLY. [Google Maps is ok but consistently shows the wrong time and is extremely inflexible.] Currently, I use a Japanese website and Chrome to translate. So my question to you is, is there a way to translate an app on my phone if the app only comes in one language? If only, say, a company with a massive translation service could translate apps on the fly. If only I knew of such a company with such a massive translation service. So do you know of any way to switch the language on these apps? I have in the past taken screenshots, gone to translate, realised I got the wrong page, switch back to the app, screenshot again etc. Sayounara Irish Brian in Japan. | https://support.google.com/translate/answer/6350658?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid | Tap to Translate does this with copied text... not sure if it will work for the entire app though

55 | EMAIL OF THE WEEK!!! | DRUMROLL
56 | JH | I was listening to last weeks AAA while driving around Sonoma in the new Nissan Ariya today. I wanted to chime in on your discussion of the silicon carbon batteries in the Honor phone. First a little background. This is still a lithium ion battery. There are lots of different flavors of lithium ion, all of which have a common component, the lithium. When charging, lithium ions (positively charged lithium particles with an electron stripped off move through the cell from the positive cathode to the negative anode). The cathodes are coated with a variety of different materials that hold the lithium. These are combinations like nickel-cobalt-aluminum, nickel-manganese-cobalt, nickel-manganese-cobalt-aluminum and iron-phosphate that have varying properties for energy density and cost. Almost all current Li-ion cells have a coating graphite (a form of carbon) on the negatively charged anode. What Honor’s battery supplier has done is blend in some silicon into the graphite. This allows the anode to absorb more lithium ions and electrons during charging and release them during discharge. Silicon-graphite (aka silicon carbon) anodes aren’t new and have been used in many EV batteries for a number of years. While silicon does improve the capacity of the battery, there is a notable downside. When the battery is charged, it swells. The more silicon, the more it swells. That’s why most cells are limited to about 10% silicon, to minimize the swelling. As we all learned from the Note 7 debacle, battery swelling in the tight confines of a smart phone is not an ideal situation. Hopefully Honor has left enough empty space in the phone to accommodate some swelling. On the topic of battery recycling, li-ion batteries are actually very recyclable and with the growth of EV sales, recyclers are ramping up capacity. Redwood Materials in Nevada already recycles enough batteries to produce raw materials for about 6 GWh a year of new batteries, enough for about 60,000-80,000 EVs. The recycling process can recover about 95-98% of the key materials (lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, copper, aluminum and more) and then feed it right back in to the manufacturing process for new batteries. There’s still a limited supply of end-of-life EV batteries since they are relatively new but that will change over the next decade. About half of what Redwood recycles today is consumer electronics batteries and the rest of mostly scrap and cuttings from battery manufacturing. The cost of many of the materials makes recycling a potentially lucrative business and we can’t just throw EV batteries away. sam abuelsamid
