Brian Swartz has recorded four jazz CD’s as a leader: "There’s Only Me" (Noir Records 2000), "Live at the Jazz Bakery" (Summit Records 2005), "Three" (Summit Records 2006) and "Portraiture" (Summit Records 2014). As an arranger, he has had commissions from the Ron Jones Influence Orchestra and Moorpark College, and has served as staff arranger for The Luckman Jazz Orchestra, John Beasley’s Monk’estra, Oingo Boingo Dance Party and the ABC TV show, "Duets". Born December 16, 1967, Brian is a second generation trumpeter. His father, CMSgt Lawrence Swartz (1937-1992), was a 30 year trumpeter in the United States AirForce. Brian’s early exposure to music made a profound influence on him and he started playing trumpet at the age of ten in Bellevue, Nebraska. As a teenager, his family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where he attended Armijo High School. He played all through his high school years and won many honors and accolades. He graduated from Armijo in 1986 and began his music education at Solano Community College. In 1988, he moved to Los Angeles to attend California State University at Northridge and the University of Southern California where he could further hone his craft. For five years, Brian studied with trumpet guru Bobby Shew. Bobby inspired Brian's passion for teaching and since 1997, Brian has maintained a very busy schedule of private students in the Los Angeles area. Brian also studied with John Coppola (SFO), Bill Bing (CSUN), John Thomas (USC) and LA studio legends Uan Rasey and Malcom McNab. Brian’s dedication to mastering his craft and continually building upon his knowledge has brought him to prominence in the Los Angeles jazz scene.

The song “Blues” takes you back to a shuffle that you would find in countless songs in the past, but with a twist, such as you would experience if you were standing in front of Chuck Berry in 1958 for the first time listening to “Johnny Be Good”. Reminiscent of Marty McFly, when he says, in Back To The Future, “I guess you guys are not ready for that yet, but your kids are gonna love it.” Yet it is as modern as Jack Johnson with his song “Symbol In My Driveway”, which was released in 2003. “Blues II” was heavily influenced from Hank Williams Sr. and Jr., paying tribute to the traditional 12 bar blues that is heard in songs, such as “Lost Highway” or “Family Tradition”. As he traveled from the 1940’s onward through blues, rock and country, he discovered the influence of the song “Little Sister”, recorded in 1961 by Elvis Presley. Having felt like he paid his dues toward the blues, while performing in venues around Nashville, TN, while celebrating a healthy fellowship with fans, friends, family and the band, “Lift Your Cup” was written. “It is the Jam Band song of my tunes, so far, calling on the show and performing for people”, says Mark. “Traveling” is the only track not written in 2018. Sometimes you only want to feel the funk and the groove with the music. Stan Lassiter, renowned Nashville guitarist, told Mark, “I really like that song. It shows that your dynamic with your guitar composition.” “Vagabond” is about a Romanian gypsy named Lucky that he met, while living off Ellington Parkway in East Nashville. After having a conversation with him, as he stood in a poncho in the pouring rain, with a smile bigger than most people not in the rain, he proceeded to give him all the change in the console of his car and had the epiphany that no matter what level of society you may reside, you can still “consider yourself Lucky from time to time.” This is a very folksy, singer / songwriter style of social commentary and Americana. Depending on the gig I'll bring it for background vocals, effects and ambient sounds. However I can definitely do a gig that is straight jazz or event just get up on a stage an improvise lyrics over a vamp for a hip-hop gig.

From cabaret appearances with fellow young performers from the worlds of theater, film and television, he went on to work in commercial advertising jingles and to performances in cabaret and concert venues from New York City to New England and the Midwest. Peter's previous recording work includes collaborations with pianist Lee Musiker (Tony Bennett, Barbara Cook) and nylon string guitar virtuoso Gene Bertoncini (Nancy Wilson, Lena Horne). He has appeared at Toronto venues such as Jazz Bistro and has performed as part of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. His premier Canadian recording, "Street of Tears," was released in late 2014 with a performance at Toronto's Jazz Bistro. "Loving You: Celebrating Shirley Horn" was released in April 2017 and has received stellar reviews and radio rotation in Canada, the United States and abroad. It was included on several "best of" lists of 2017 jazz recordings and was nominated for a 2018 Independent Music Award. Having relocated to Canada from New York City in 2012, Peter resides in Toronto, Canada. He holds a B.A. in Art History from McGill University and an M.A. in the History of Design and Curatorial Studies from Parsons The New School for Design and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Peter is a member of Screen Actors Guild/American Federation of Television & Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).

My favourite voices are the ones in which the singer has developed their own personal sound - like a horn player. I favour lyricism and nuance.
