Tuesday1/2/24Promo for Friday Fireside Chat with Matt Abrahams 1/5/24Well, here's a great way to build some new, essential skills for 2024. Who doesn't want to rock their next informal meeting or be the one everyone remembers after some seemingly idle chit-chat? And who hasn't had the experience of flubbing an opportunity and wishing there was a chance for a do-over? My Friday Fireside Chat guest is communications expert Matt Abrahams, who is also a lecturer at Stanford and an award-winning podcast host. We'll be talking about his six steps to better spontaneous speaking and get into specific situations, such as making a pitch or giving feedback. Wednesday1/3/24Rita quoted in Peter Coy article in the New York TimesThis is fun: I was featured as the quote of the day in this great NYT piece by Peter Coy! My belief is that "industry", as we traditionally think of it, is an artificial category, that can create dangerous blind spots. This article polls movie stars, college presidents, and farmers about their hopes for 2024, so certainly a cross-industry approach!https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/27/opinion/matt-damon-fran-drescher-2024.html#industry #seeingaroundcornersPeter Coy ColumbiaExecEd NYT

Monday1/8/24WGBH Podcast "Under the Radar"Over the weekend, WGBH dropped a podcast called "Under the Radar." I was a guest, as was Phil Lempert, founder and CEO of Supermarket Guru, a food and health news hub. We were dishing on the subject of self-checkouts in grocery stores. I learned something I didn't know - that some of the early efforts at self-checkouts were made to prevent supermarket workers from unionizing! Phil offered some amazing insights, including what we can expect when new bar code standards go into effect, and why a typical supermarket won't be able to use the technology that Amazon Go uses. I talked about user experience - it was a great conversation that sped by. Wednesday1/10/24Promo for Chip Conley's new bookChip Conley, a truly Modern Elder, is leading the charge to redefine how we think about the second half of our lives. In his wonderful new book, which releases next week, he likens this period to a chrysalis - a time when the accumulated lessons of our lives can lead us to reinvent ourselves and live fully up to our potential. Chip's warm optimism is particularly poignant because he is battling stage 3 cancer and has been coping with the struggles of ill-health even as the joyous occasion of his book launch is taking place. You still have time to pre-order the book (which publishes on the 16th) and do pop in to Chip's appearances on the Today Show and Good Morning America next Monday.

Friday1/12/24Flipbook: On the agenda for 2024 – a better way to keep track of your innovation portfolioSo what happened with innovation in 2023 (my perspective: practically nothing!) and what can we expect for 2024? That was the subject of two virtual panels sponsored by Innov8rs on December 5, announcing the release of their indispensable annual handbook for corporate innovators everywhere. In my session, I focused on the enduring lack of alignment that many organizations face between their systems for launching strategies, allocating budgets, managing portfolios and rewarding people and suggest some ways we might be able to do a better job. Hint: Maybe it isn't culture, mindset or commitment - maybe it's that the tools we have aren't fit for purpose! Tuesday1/16/24Promo for Fireside with Paul LeBlancPaul J. LeBlanc is one of my personal heroes. As President of Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) he did what many said was impossible - he took back on-line education from predatory for-profit schools and made it possible for tens of thousands of students to graduate and seize opportunities. He's also the author of a wonderful, hopeful and human new book "Broken: How Our Social Systems are Failing Us and How We can Fix Them." It's a very human read, infused with the wisdom of Paul's many years of experience and with his humility as a leader. He shows us that we needn't despair of our messed up social systems but rather can each participate in making them better. Tuesday1/16/24Thought Spark: Inflation Reduction Act and Pharma companiesEven in a polarized America, people are in agreement that in many cases prescription drug prices are so high that they are problematic, costing companies and health systems vast amounts of resources while not making Americans particularly healthier. The Inflation Reduction Act, passed last year got a lot of attention for giving the Secretary of Health and Human services to negotiate with drugmakers on behalf of Medicare and Medicaid. But a little discussed provision of the act could have an even bigger impact on which therapies drugmakers put resources into investigating. #seeingaroundcorners #strategy #innovation #inflectionpoint #IRA #drugprices #pharmaceuticals #coopetitionLen Rosenberg https://www.linkedin.com/in/len-rosenberg-2695922/ Geoff Colvin Adam Brandenberger Barry Nalebuff Luke Greenwalt https://www.linkedin.com/in/luke-greenwalt-a59a1310/ Todd Bisping

Monday1/22/24Rita Mentioned on Marketplace 10% off! 20% off! No, make that 30%! Does it seem as though everything is on sale, all the time? I explore this issue with Marketplace's Kristin Schwab. The reality is that many goods and services offered "on sale" were never sold at the presumed list price, ever. There have been lawsuits about this but at the end of the day, the consumer is often left to their own devices to figure out whether a given purchase is a bargain or not. We also revisit one of the historical attempts to do away with the sales & promotion gambits by looking back at Ron Johnson's disastrous attempt to remake J. C. Penney's approach to sales by eliminating promotions and replacing them with "fair and square" pricing. Will this continue? I expect consumers are eventually going to tire of it and retailers will have to figure something else out.LI / TW / FBhttps://www.marketplace.org/2024/01/17/retailers-are-stuck-in-a-cycle-of-constant-sales/#shopping #sales #retail #seeingaroundcorners #trendsMarketplace ColumbiaExecED Valize Ron Boire Kai Ryssdal Kristin Schwab

Wednesday1/24/24Thought Spark: Gig workers can fight backFrederick Winslow Taylor was the first - and arguably most successful - management consultant. His concept of scientific management applied to factory work both yielded unimaginable improvements in productivity and unimaginable tensions between workers and their managers. What's been misunderstood is that the tension he faced in his own career - workers sabotaging their equipment to keep productivity levels down, for instance - was never his intention. His goal was to create cooperative arrangements in which workers would do their best and managers would share the resulting benefits with them in the form of higher pay. We tend to remember the dark side of Taylorism - the kind mocked by Charlie Chaplin in his 1936 film "Modern Times." Well, it's back in the form of algorithms that control every aspect of some worker's lives. But an interesting social experiment in Indonesia may illustrate a way in which Taylor's original vision might become reality. Tuesday1/30/24Thought Sparks: Imagining the modern smartphone - 23 years ago!It was the 1990's. My co-author and I were just beginning to marvel at how often otherwise well managed companies got themselves into big trouble when they tried to explore new areas of opportunity. Perhaps, we thought, they could learn from the lessons of habitual entrepreneurs - people who had successfully launched multiple businesses. The resulting book was called "The Entrepreneurial Mindset." It got two things exactly wrong: publishing just as the dot com era imploded, wrecking the public perception of entreprenuership. It also landed in the wrong part of the bookstore for our target market - practicing executives - to find it. I recently had the encouragement to go back and much to my surprise found a pretty accurate description of a modern smartphone as a potentially game-changing product - long before such a thing existed in real life. This week's Spark describes it. Tuesday2/6/24Thought Spark: Linear vs. incremental changeYou're not imagining things - change in technologies and systems really is speeding up! One big reason is that we are now experiencing accelerated learning curves, meaning that learning functions are getting faster. In linear systems, the ones our brains were designed for, change is additive. One plus one equals two. A journey that is to take a hundred days is 1/3 complete by day 33. In systems with an exponential function, in contrast, change happens cumulatively, which famed theorist Ray Kurzweil explans is a property that any system learning through trial and error will exhibit. It's hard to anticipate the behavior of an exponential system with a linear lens. #exponentialorganizations #change #acceleratinglearning #learning #cumulativelearning #seeingaroundcornersChristopher Mims Mark Bonchek Ray Kurzweil Salim Ismael Peter Diamamandis Chris Yeh Valize Ron Boire Megan McArdle Washington Post Columbia Exec Ed

Tuesday2/13/24Thought Sparks: Why is nobody talking about the massive wealth transfer to women?According to McKinsey research, by 2030 vast amounts of wealth will be in the hands of women. In looking into this, I was astonished to learn just how recent American women's ability to access and control their own financial resources has been. Moreover, how entire institutions have grown up basically ignoring women. And women themselves have often not been proactive about educating themselves about their finances, almost as though they didn't belong in those fields. That's all about to change and probably more quickly than many of our institutions are prepared for. #finance #womeninvestors #money #savings #investment #inflection points #seeingaroundcorners #wealthtransferTori Dunlap Sallie Krawcheck McKinsey Dina Bakst Carol Gilligan Caroline Criado Perez Sally Helgesen Avivah Wittenberg-Cox

Wednesday2/14/24Promo for Friday Fireside Chat with Paul LeBlancYou haven't missed this Friday's Fireside Chat with Paul J. LeBlanc. He's one of my personal heroes. He shows us that we needn't despair of our messed up social systems but rather can each participate in making them better.https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_gq9Y83GoQ4mkDx5nQTyz1w

Wednesday2/14/24Valentine's day - plug for Peter Sims' new bookHappy Valentine's Day! I'm going to be spending it winging my way back to the East Coast after a few days in California at a conference called PowerShift. It's the brainchild of Peter Eagle Sims, author of the soon-to-be-released book "Black Sheep: The Quest to be Human in an Inhuman Time." More on the content of the conference probably in next week's Thought Sparks, but for now, the book is available for pre-order and is well worth a read. It's personal, doesn't pull a lot of punches and even names names! More importantly, it's meant to get us all thinking of our collective commitment to one another and how what Hitendra Wadwha calls our "love energy" can help us find solutions to seemingly intractable human problems. Tuesday2/20/24Thought Sparks: Could you benefit from a peer to peer group? It used to be that company leaders thought their in-house training programs were their secret sauce. They created common culture. They built internal networks. They helped younger leaders to become ready for successively more challenging roles. Ah, those were the days. When fabled General Electric made the decision to sell off its legendary Crotonville training center, we knew that era was over. Today, leaders are increasingly responsible for their own development. They are also being asked to take bigger and bigger career jumps as hierarchies flatten and middle management roles get trimmed. The result? A whole generation of leaders who feel unready for the massive challenges their organizations face. Not with respect to the technical skills - in many ways, we have a more tech-savvy and smart set of young leaders than ever. It's the soft stuff - how do I have tough conversations? How do I get the difficult feedback I know I need to grow? How do I deal with power and politics when scarce resources are leading people to feel insecure and defensive? How do I make sense of the context when uncertainty seems unlimited? One thought we're having at Valize is that peer-to-peer learning might be part of the solution, both for leaders and for their organizations. But the reality has been that since women until astonishingly recently didn't have control over their money, the industry grew up largely designed by and serving men. We are on the cusp of a major inflection point, however, in that by 2030 there is going to be a great transfer of wealth to women. Wednesday2/28/24Flipbook: Fighting back against the algorithms - Community and the redemption of TaylorismFrederick Winslow Taylor was the first - and arguably most successful - management consultant. But an interesting social experiment in Indonesia may illustrate a way in which Taylor's original vision might become reality.https://issuu.com/ritamcgrath/docs/fighting_back_against_the_algorithms_community_a

Thursday2/29/24Promo for Elements on Aberrant CapitalismCapitalism has proved a robust system for promoting innovation, increasing productivity and generally underpinning human flourishing. But in many ways, people are now questioning some of its downsides. Cambridge University Press has just released the latest in their "elements" series, looking at how we might leverage the digital revolution to get capitalism back on track. Authors Hunter Hastings and Steve Denning have given a lot of thought to how we keep the benefits of capitalism - innovation, growth and prosperity - while better managing its darker sides. For the next two weeks, Cambridge is making the book available as a free download, so don't delay. https://www.cambridge.org/core/elements/aberrant-capitalism/5DB447BF46A80480CE63AC14B58AEBAA#capitalism #productivity #prosperity #aberrantcapitalism #customers #financialization #investment #shareholders #stakeholders #customersSteve Denning Hunter Hastings William Lazonick Rebecca Henderson Darryl Rigby Hugo Lourenco Peter Sims Arie Lewin Carlota Perez Michael Lurie

Thursday2/29/24Thought Leadership TBTAt the Thinkers50 event in 2013, I participated in a panel on "The Future of Enterprise" with panelists Pankaj Ghemawat, Anil Gupta, Richard Rumelt and Roger Martin. Interesting to see how many of the things we were talking about then - the shrinking of the 'good' corporation, the increased speed of everything, the shortening of competitive advantages and information transparency - have now become our reality. Worth a reflection.https://www.ritamcgrath.com/sparks/2013/12/the-future-of-enterprise-panel-at-the-thinkers50-event/#predictions #Thinkers50 #panels #transientadvantage #globalization #outsourcingDick Rumelt Roger Martin Anil Gupta Pankaj Ghemawat Thinkers50 ColumbiaExecutiveEducation

Newhouse Professor of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School and a physician in the Department of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, and if that weren't enough, he hosts the Freakonomics MD podcast, and has just written a fascinating book called "Random Acts of Medicine". We'll be talking about how unseen forces shape our health outcomes: everything from EZ Pass tollbooths to marathons is on the table!https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_y_6G474iTMetfLByZKmgkg#FridayFiresideChat #RandomActsofMedicineAnupam B Jena

Thursday3/7/24Flipbook: Our lizard lateral brains and the exponential world we're confrontingYou're not imagining things - change in technologies and systems really is speeding up! It's hard to anticipate the behavior of an exponential system with a linear lens.https://issuu.com/ritamcgrath/docs/our_lizard_lateral_brains_and_the_exponential_worl
