HR will allow me to use sick leave for teaching days only which will bring me to about 5 weeks of paid leave. This does mean that I’m still officially “on duty” for research and service requirements. The department has been more supportive in verbal negotiations, of my two courses 1 will be a “second 8-week” course, and the other will be taught by my TA for the first few weeks. They likely will not expect much from me and be accommodating in terms of actual service and research productivity.

Since the semester is 16 weeks, this meant that I did not teach the fall after my baby was born (over summer). On return from leave, the expectation is that faculty will be full time for the remainder of the semester and in place of teaching will take on additional service. Both parents are eligible to take 12 weeks of paid leave within the first year of the child's life (or within a year of adoption or fostering).
