The NTSC has also been studying and backing up rare herbaceous species and would not be opposed to exploring conservation of orchids or other life forms if needed.1967National mandate, facilities based in Fredericton, NBAreas in Canada with high plant conservation needs, especially species threatened with invasive pestsResearch, Inventory/ monitoring/ mapping, Education, Public Outreach, Population Recovery, Genomic research interests within the CFS, long-term ex situ storage facilities to bridge time between risk and actionAt NTSC, our collection was originally initiated to research and deploy improved forest regeneration materials for forestry. Now that industry is well developed and has expanded through academic labs/NSERC funding, the focus has shifted to conservation and restoration research, genomics, population viability, and upholding international treaties about domestic ex situ germplasm availability to further research and applied uses. We have over 120 species and 20,000 seed collections known to collection date, GPS points and year available now, and intentions to increase geographic and genetically unique population representation in the next 10 years. We do this through planning our own collection trips, collaborations with local organizations with strong plant conservation and recovery mandates, or enlist contracts to collect or acquire clean seed through funding transfers where collections meet our research standards. We are expanding to offer more virtual training in 2021 and beyond, and plan to better use our legacy data combined with local TEK and scientific knowledge to improve local restoration outcomes with source-identified seed supply. We're actively seeking engaged organizations who want to partner and have need of seed banking services as a proven conservation tool.Natural tree and shrub seed production is extremely variable so we rely on locally trained seed collectors and nurseries to inform us of potential collectable crops in good seed years. We've begun using iNaturalist as a platform through our partners as a means to target specific species and photos of seed from citizen scientists, and always, traditional media outreach in years the public notices, i.e. the 2019 black ash seed crop across its range. Internally, we use Tableau, Access and GIS to monitor our own dynamic gaps as collections are drawn down, or to locate new areas a species may be confirmed occurring in the wild. Our primary conservation tools for seeds and DNA tissues are -20C freezers capable of holding approximately 35,000 collections, and -196C cryogenic storage containers capable of holding ~60,000 excised butternut embryos or hundreds of thousands of smaller seeded-species. We clean most of our seed, so have a wide variety of small seed processing units (tumbler, dewinger, aspirator, sieves, wet depulping, drying cabinets, etc). We also maintain a dozen Conviron germination cabinets for regular and novel germination testing, growth chambers, greenhouses and can collaborate with specialized researchers in other CFS or academic institutions interested in particular species. All data gathered at NTSC is logged in our PostGres database. We can also work with collaborators to purchase seed collection or processing equipment, offer shipping accounts for material to be sent quickly to NTSC, and training support. We specialize in non-destructive seed testing, particular for Species at Risk. This has enabled us to utilize and expand our moisture activity monitoring equipment, and during germination testing, we routinely transplant successful seedlings out to the greenhouse to be utilized by recovery programs. We are hoping to expand into more paired DNA sampling during seed collection (twigs, leaves, roots, etc) and a specialized drying room to maintain this material often sought by geneticists/researchers as well.

Education activities have included delivery of SAR programs to schools, scouts, guides, and summer camps. Public outreach and stewardship activities have included the installation of signage and habitat features (chimney swift towers, turtle nests, turtle crossing signs, Monarch waystations and pollinator gardens) at locations throughout the watershed. News articles, social media posts, and media releases are all also used to support projects. Otonabee Conservation does not undertake any monitoring activities related to SAR.Chimney Swift Towers were installed in partnership with the Trent-Severn Waterway at several locations, pollinator gardens/monarch waystations have been installed at parks, schools and conservation areas, turtle nests have been installed on public land, shoreline buffers established/enhanced on public property, milk snake hibernacula installed at Indian River Reptile Zoo. Most recently, turtle crossing signs were installed at Curve Lake First Nation. Projects are generally undertaken through partnerships, and opportunities that arise when funding is available.

Volunteers can choose from several research areas: Reptiles, Salamanders & Vernal Pools, Bats, Frog Call Monitoring, Whip-poor-will and Nighthawk Surveys, the Carden Grassland Bird Blitz, Plant Monitoring, and a new Bobolink, Meadowlark, Barn Swallow survey program in targeted areas will begin in 2021. We also provide general SAR Identification training to all volunteers. As of 2020 we are working with approx 120 volunteers, and they monitor Conservancy Nature Reserves in teams of two in order to steward the land. The results also inform our acquisition strategy. We provide training programs for each monitoring acitivity, along with protocols. Some private landowners also participate in the program. All data submitted to the NHIC. Between 2018 & 2020, over 1,441 SAR records have been submitted to the NHIC through this program. We maintain two MOTUS towers in Ramara and Carden in partnership with Wildlife Preservation Canada, but this falls outside the program described here. The citizen science program relies on eyes and ears on the ground, taking photographs, video, and audio recordings for verification when needed. We use the Avenza mapping app, as well as gps. Recently we have been using trail cams on select nature reserves and are working with a software program that will allow volunteers to review the footage collected and identify species.
