Chapter 1
6The book begins with the a flash-back to the formation of the Darling family, including how Mr. Darling won Mrs. Darling through being the speediest suitor. Upon Wendy's birth, Mr. Darling was worried about finances and meticulously went through how bills to make sure they wouldn't have to "send her back". Shortly after came John and Michael. They are forced to be economical regarding a nanny and hire a Newfoundland dog named Nana. Despite Mr. Darling's fears of poverty and financial ruin, the family thrives. Soon, Mrs. Darling begins to hear whispers of a "Peter" in the children's minds at night when she is "tidying up" their minds. The next morning she finds leaves at the foot of Wendy's bed. When she asks Wendy about it, Wendy insists that Peter comes through the three-story window at night and plays the pipes at the end of her bed. One night, Mrs. Darling falls asleep in the children's nursery and wakes to find a boy dressed in skeleton leaves who, despite appearing to be the same age as Wendy, still has all of his baby teeth. Chapter 2
12Mrs. Darling, startled by Peter's appearance, screams and Nana joins in the ruckus and attempts to catch him. Nana misses but does manage to get ahold of Peter's shadow. Mrs. Darling tucks the shadow into a drawer, deciding it would be best to tell Mr. Darling about it later. A week later, Mr. and Mrs. Darling are getting ready to leave for a party and Michael is refusing to take his medicine. Wendy offers up the compromise of Michael taking his medicine at the same time as their Father, only Mr. Darling tricks Michael and doesn't take his - and makes the mistake of trying to make a joke out of sneaking the medicine into Nana's bowl. No one finds it funny and this hurts Mr. Darling's pride so he drags Nana out of the house and ties her up in the yard. Nana begins barking and Wendy remarks that is isn't because Nana is upset that she's tied up - that it's her bark for "Danger". Worried, Mrs. Darling locks the window before she leaves but unfortunately the stars are "so fond of fun that they are on his side tonight" and signal to Peter Pan that the grown-ups are gone. Chapter 3
19Peter and Tinker Bell arrive in the nursery and search for Peter's shadow. He joyfully locates it but quickly turns tearful when he can't reattach his shadow, which awakens Wendy. Wendy assists Peter and sews his shadow back on, who then cockily crows about how clever he is, dismissing Wendy's part in the operation. Wendy is appalled by Peter's lack of gratitude and she hides from him under her blankets but he manages to charm her back out from under them. He even charms a real kiss from Wendy, or rather she teaches him what a kiss is and he reciprocates, only to have Tink pull her hair angrily in response. Wendy is disappointed to realize Peter's interest doesn't seem to be in her but rather in finding a surrogate mother for himself and the Lost Boys. He convinces her to come to Neverland with promises of teaching her to fly, mermaids, and fairies. Wendy counters by making sure John and Michael can come to which Peter agrees with little care. As the children are learning to fly, Nana breaks free of her chain and runs to the party to find Mr. and Mrs. Darling to warn them of the danger and they leave immediately. Unfortuantely, by the time they arrive home, the children are gone. Narrator
